So I decided to clear out my stash of hobby materials. By using them, naturally. This will: 1) take a long time, 2) not go well, 3) contain curse words

#my crafts#knitting#craft update#queued post#sunshine sweater#progress has been made!#a lot of progress#i wanna rant about automatic post-processing and colour inaccuracy of pics and how this adds to phone addiction and feeling of unreality#a did a little digging into this#meaning i just looked up some info for maybe an hour#and boy am i annoyed with what i found#you essentially have to put in work to make images look like they do irl#and whatever “AI” they use for post-processing (and they DO use that) just..#essentially doesnt this mean that the pics you take are not representative of reality?#i get why it is the way it is#the aggressive automatic post-processing being the default#but i do not like this (understatement)#maybe i should dig up some old digital cameras to take pics#or some old phone#just for pics#just to show the real colour#because that auto post-processing with “AI”.. explains a LOT about why some of the zoomed in photos look the way they do#mini rant over#and THEN there's the whole hardware thing!#same pics look different different screens#and they STILL dont look like they do irl!#this whole tech bullshit is exhausting.

#my crafts#knitting#craft update#queued post#so far so good#but not even finished with the sleeve#didnt do swatch recalculations#so itll definitely end up being larger than expected#which i may or may not be okay with depending on how large it gets#i absolutely love the yarn tho#so pleasant to knit with#it is slower than previous one#for obvious reasons#reasons being#its a whole lot thinner#ngl tho the pattern doesnt make sense at times#could really use some improvement#the start instruction for body increase would just end up in a line and only a single stitch#kinda makes me think the author crochets and it doesnt translate into knitting#and then the whole “purl all sts then twists sts to rejoin the two pieces after the neckline”#followed by “repeat previous two rows”#that would result in repeating the rejoining section#and then the counts in rows instead of length#well it is what it is#but i cant say the pattern is beginner friendly#i do appreciate it being free (on the website only)

Started another knitting project!
this one's Sunshine Sweater
First time knitting a batwing sweater, so i expect it to be too large, which i'll just treat as oversized sweater
Yarn I'm using is Concept by Katia, Catena Merino Fine 25g - 110m
though it's suggested to use 3.5mm needles, i'm going with 4.5mm. my tension is looser than it used to be, but larger needles gives softer, better draping garment
#knitting#my crafts#i think i have enough yarn for this#famous last words before i run out of it#also the yarn in that pic looks brighter than irl#i might need to look at camera settings#sunshine sweater#queued post

I also have a massive stash of leather, mostly for bookbinding, but in this case the largest pieces were used to make armguards
as with anything that you need to sew, paper templates(?) and adjustments before cutting the fabric (leather) is key
#my crafts#leathercraft#this is definitely function over form#family member needed some protection for working in the garden#cos every scratch or poke results in massive bruises#its a health thing and nothing can be done about it#so armguards it is#does it look like shit?#absolutely#but it works#and i wanted to make sure it's adjustable if persons arms swells#and also wanted to make sure they're easy to put on#and white thread will be very useful if the thread ever breaks and needs fixing#function and practicality over form#also im just shit at it#but who cares!#i made this over one evening#finished object#tested this with needles while sewing#definitely enough protection from any plant violence#queued post

hey does anyone know how to format a book into signatures to bind. I've been trying for a while but I'm shit at technology so it's just pissing me off at this point
I'm doing it on word because I don't know another way, it's technically working but it's such a pain and I fear it's not going to work when I print it out. Any tips would be much appreciated
(I sort of can format it, but it looks kinda ugly and it's hard to get the margins bigger, so I can cut it, because it gets glitchy or just doesn't do it. And I don't know how to add stuff like little images and the numbers, (by little images I mean the sort of patterns that are sometimes on top of pages or chapters etc... number and patterns which I need to stay at the bottom and top of the pages))
(also, this is mainly for binding old books, that I only have as a pdf or something, as I prefer reading physical books, if that affects the process...)

Knitting is the most violent oscillation between 'oh god it's so over' to 'we are SO back' hobby I have ever experienced when it is going well you are flyingggg but if you discover a mistake (crochet with its nice easy unravelling had not prepared me for) the absolute heart surgery levels of concentration it takes to fix it. woe to twisted stitches and colourwork mistakes. I want to be one of those chill grandmas who can chat as they knit without even looking but alas I am cursed to forever a hunched goblin counting ominously under my breath and trying frantically to unwind yarn

#knitting#my crafts#riverhillsweater#i got into a habit of knitting both front and back at the same time#and both sleeves as well#(this is for when im not knitting in the round)#mostly to keep any mistakes the same for both sides so it looks deliberate#and also to keep tension uniform throughout the piece#one thing ill say about the Wish yarn.. is that you dont need a pet to get covered in hair(yarn)#i havent used that lint roller over the last year as much as i have over the past few days

So I also do bookbinding. Made a stack of paper blocks from old school notebooks some months back and decided now I wanna have fun with the covers, so I'm doing this now
Picked these two blocks to start with

and will be using these things for covers

did some measurements and marking and started cutting down to size.. i'm claiming partial success.

#my crafts#bookbinding#woodworking#wood covers#well.. mostly doing this now cos cross stitch from kit is kicking my ass#ill be doing both some carving and wood burning#got some stencils#but i think ill also print out some patterns and do carbon paper transfer#i think i wanna dome some traditional symbols and patterns from my country and some regions up north#also will be adding leather back#fun little trick when doing wood covers is to use that pre-cut edge as book edge#and my shitty edge will be covered by the leather back#anyway#woodwork (the non-power tool kind) is kinda great when you have some frustration to work off#that and listening to metal#got a whole playlist of mostly finnish metal.. in finnish.. its great!#in the corner of one of the pics you can actually see the edge of my hobby glove-box that no longer has gloves#why i didnt use it?#cos the wood thingies did not fit properly inside#made a whole bunch of notebooks over the years#various stitch styles#i like coptic stitch#but i also make it sort of combination coptic+glued back for reinforcement#it doesnt lay fully flat but its still pretty flexible#first time using those fabric thingies whatever theyre called in english#probably did it wrong#but whatever!#should still be better than without

i'm not gonna admit how long it took for me to grid this..
Anyway, I'm doing a [REDACTED] cross stitch kit and the floss is brittle.. and this is attempt #2..
#cross stitch#my crafts#cross stitch kit#in my mind the instructions are unclear#nowhere does it say that i should NEVER separate the strands#and instead i should consider the wound up thread as a single strand#guess what i tried..#guess how much i hated it#and guess how long ago the attempt no. 1 was :)#obviously looking up instructions online did not cross my mind#because im oldschool and expect the provided instructions to be clear and full..#too high expectations there apparently#absolute entitlement on my part#anyway#a friend got a different kind of kit from the same manufacturer#and showed a photo where the instruction DID include the line about not separating the strands#so now im trying again#i started doing the grid on ct14 i had bought for other things#but that one has imperfections and the colouration is different from this one a bit (this one is lighter black)#and since i have several kits for a set of images#i decided to just undo what i have tried before and redo on the same aida

details under the thingy
Used 4mm circular needles for the sleeves and body. 6mm, 5.5mm, 5mm and 4.5mm circular for the edge.
Sleeves and body is knit flat, edge is knit in round.
Cast on 64sts
Sleeve: Knit rib (s1, then *k1, p1* until end) for 50 rows
Body:
Increase by 82 sts on each side (start stockinette here)
Knit stockinette for 444 rows:
RS: s1, then k until end;
WS: s1, then p until end.
Bind off 82sts on each side
Sleeve: Knit rib (s1, then *k1, p1* until end) for 50 rows
Bind off loosely in pattern
Stitch together the edges (sleeve sides and the areas where increase/decrease)
Edge:
Pick up the slipped stitches (I used 3mm circular needles for easier pick up)
Knit rib in round (k1 p1):
rows 1-4, with 6mm needles
rows 5-8, with 5.5mm needles
rows 9-12 with 5mm needles
rows 13-15 with 4.5mm needles
Colours:
Sleeves: Rows 1-50 - Black
Body:
Rows 1-50 - Black
51-74 - Gray
75-84 - Red
85-96 - Gray
97-146 - Brown
147-160 - Red
161-196 - Black

311-372 - Gray
373-388 - Red
389-444 - Black
Edge:
Rows 1-8 - Brown
Rows 9-15 Gray
Measurements of the final piece (unblocked):
Swatch (blocked) info:
10 cm x 10 cm = 33 rows x 23 sts
#knitting#my crafts#craft update#finished object#the measurements were supposed to be a bit different#but whatever#it is done#now what do i do#how obvious is it that i have never written a pattern#can you even call this a pattern?#this is just what i did

I decided to pick up the stitches, after trying to stitch over the edge and it ended up curling anyway

Weekend progress: 166/448 rows
Wasn't too sure about the brown/orange/whatever at first, but I think it works

The problem with sewing is that you quickly realise you have dumped lots of skill points into control thread and furthermore, there’s a lot of other hobbies that require control thread so you decide to pick up knitting, or crochet, or weaving, and then spinning happens to you, or rug making, or cord weaving, and then you turn the wrong corner on the internet and find out control thread also specs into basket weaving, and book binding, and then you’re thinking things like “I wonder if this also applies to lead climbing” and now you have A Problem

when i look up a knitting term, the last thing I want is an ai overview. I want a 60+ year old woman with no understanding of lighting or helpful camera angles who still manages to give the most concise and clear explanation of how to execute purl 2tog through the backloop. ai summary fuck off, where is phyllis?

Workweek progress: 312/448 rows (not including sleeves)
And that is how much yarn i have left:

Which makes me wonder if I may have panicked just a little bit, and didn't really need to use the brown yarn..
We will find out in a thrilling conclusion next week (probably)!
Also I still need to figure out what to do with the edge, since this is stockinette and it curls. I have two options:
fold over the edges and stitch them (I have colour scheme picked out for this)
or pick up the edge stitches and knit rib for a few rows.
I think this will depend on how much yarn I have left by the time I'm finished knitting the whole piece
