So I decided to clear out my stash of hobby materials. By using them, naturally. This will: 1) take a long time, 2) not go well, 3) contain curse words

So I also do bookbinding. Made a stack of paper blocks from old school notebooks some months back and decided now I wanna have fun with the covers, so I'm doing this now
Picked these two blocks to start with

and will be using these things for covers

did some measurements and marking and started cutting down to size.. i'm claiming partial success.

#my crafts#bookbinding#woodworking#wood covers#well.. mostly doing this now cos cross stitch from kit is kicking my ass#ill be doing both some carving and wood burning#got some stencils#but i think ill also print out some patterns and do carbon paper transfer#i think i wanna dome some traditional symbols and patterns from my country and some regions up north#also will be adding leather back#fun little trick when doing wood covers is to use that pre-cut edge as book edge#and my shitty edge will be covered by the leather back#anyway#woodwork (the non-power tool kind) is kinda great when you have some frustration to work off#that and listening to metal#got a whole playlist of mostly finnish metal.. in finnish.. its great!#in the corner of one of the pics you can actually see the edge of my hobby glove-box that no longer has gloves#why i didnt use it?#cos the wood thingies did not fit properly inside#made a whole bunch of notebooks over the years#various stitch styles#i like coptic stitch#but i also make it sort of combination coptic+glued back for reinforcement#it doesnt lay fully flat but its still pretty flexible#first time using those fabric thingies whatever theyre called in english#probably did it wrong#but whatever!#should still be better than without

i'm not gonna admit how long it took for me to grid this..
Anyway, I'm doing a [REDACTED] cross stitch kit and the floss is brittle.. and this is attempt #2..
#cross stitch#my crafts#cross stitch kit#in my mind the instructions are unclear#nowhere does it say that i should NEVER separate the strands#and instead i should consider the wound up thread as a single strand#guess what i tried..#guess how much i hated it#and guess how long ago the attempt no. 1 was :)#obviously looking up instructions online did not cross my mind#because im oldschool and expect the provided instructions to be clear and full..#too high expectations there apparently#absolute entitlement on my part#anyway#a friend got a different kind of kit from the same manufacturer#and showed a photo where the instruction DID include the line about not separating the strands#so now im trying again#i started doing the grid on ct14 i had bought for other things#but that one has imperfections and the colouration is different from this one a bit (this one is lighter black)#and since i have several kits for a set of images#i decided to just undo what i have tried before and redo on the same aida

Pick up the slipped stitches (I used 3mm circular needles for easier pick up)
Knit rib in round (k1 p1):

rows 5-8, with 5.5mm needles
rows 9-12 with 5mm needles
rows 13-15 with 4.5mm needles

I decided to pick up the stitches, after trying to stitch over the edge and it ended up curling anyway

Weekend progress: 166/448 rows
Wasn't too sure about the brown/orange/whatever at first, but I think it works

The problem with sewing is that you quickly realise you have dumped lots of skill points into control thread and furthermore, there’s a lot of other hobbies that require control thread so you decide to pick up knitting, or crochet, or weaving, and then spinning happens to you, or rug making, or cord weaving, and then you turn the wrong corner on the internet and find out control thread also specs into basket weaving, and book binding, and then you’re thinking things like “I wonder if this also applies to lead climbing” and now you have A Problem

when i look up a knitting term, the last thing I want is an ai overview. I want a 60+ year old woman with no understanding of lighting or helpful camera angles who still manages to give the most concise and clear explanation of how to execute purl 2tog through the backloop. ai summary fuck off, where is phyllis?

Workweek progress: 312/448 rows (not including sleeves)
And that is how much yarn i have left:

Which makes me wonder if I may have panicked just a little bit, and didn't really need to use the brown yarn..
We will find out in a thrilling conclusion next week (probably)!
Also I still need to figure out what to do with the edge, since this is stockinette and it curls. I have two options:
fold over the edges and stitch them (I have colour scheme picked out for this)
or pick up the edge stitches and knit rib for a few rows.
I think this will depend on how much yarn I have left by the time I'm finished knitting the whole piece

Oh, and this is what I'm using to select the next yarn colour, after 10+ rows of one colour (10 minimum, but generally changed when I'm bored with the current one)

So I have bunch of this yarn (Mitji, 50g 270m. 80% Acrylic, 10% Mohair, 10% Wool).
For some reason I decided (calculated tbh. calculated a LOT) that it would not be enough for a sweater. So I decided it's gonna be enough for a sleeved wrap thingy
Will there be enough yarn for this? Probably not. I did not do calculation for what I need for this
Can I buy more yarn if I run out? technically yes, but not the same brand. And also the point is to use up the stash, so I will not buy any and make do with what i have, so it'll probably end up smaller than what i planned
I am gonna call it RGB Sleeved Wrap, and technically I will be correct! Yes, I know that technically the first letter/word in the name should be the main yarn colour, but I decided that I will go the opposite way and start the name with the yarn i have the least of. For the bit.
#my crafts#knitting#craft update#I had it set up differently#1 slice for each ball of yarn not colour#each slice repeated 2 times#at the time i had 3 black; 2 gray; 1 red#thing is#3 slices of black are still different slices and has the same chance to roll#which is how I ended up with rolling black 3 times in a row#live and learn

After knitting up one (1) ball of yarn, and with the progress of 15cm of the body, and with a total of 136cm of body needed, I have confirmed that I will not have enough yarn for the whole thing
which means digging through my stash and looking for something close in weight, etc..
behold! the new additions!

Downside: this will end up with different thickness and stiffness throughout
The REAL downside: I can no longer call this RGB sleeved wrap.

Needle minder done!
For the next ones, and there will be next ones, need to remind myself to grind out (is that the right phrase?) a bit of an indentation, apply the glue there and press in the magnet. that should hold it in place better
#needle minder#cross stitch#my crafts#im absolute dogshit at making photos#also i have opinions on that cross stitch piece i have been working on and have put away for a LONG time#negative opinions about their main selling point#i will get back to this when i make a decision how to continue with it without wanting to burn it

I do some cross stitch, because I saw it on the internet and thought it looked cool
what i also saw on the internet (later) were the needle minders - magnetic thingies you attach to canvas that holds your needle in place when not in use. so i decided i wanted one, because it looked cool
what i also have are some pins and magnets, and E6000
removed the pointy bit of the pin. sanded down the enamel so that the magnet attaches to the metal directly. glued it with the E6000 and now it's drying
the one thing that i really should have thought about is that i'm working with metal. and magnets. and that maybe both of those two pieces should be held semi-tightly when attaching the magnet to the right spot...
lessons were learned and now i'll have to clean off some glue
#needle minder#cross stitch#diy#edgy pins#i have a few#bought them last year actually#probably will make them into more needle minders#probably did something wrong in the process of making this#but im improvising#my crafts

A while ago I decided to clear out my stash of hobby supplies. It's taking a lot of space (both physically and mentally).
So I'm using up the materials. Started a while back, but decided to document this, because why not.
Let's see how this goes and how long before I drop this documentation idea
