i love you erichthonios. athena functions as an evil foil to venat, and as such erich is the WoL's parallel. and he really is! made to be weak and fallible and "lesser" than the ancients' standard, but still able to prevail with the help of our friends and our determination and our care for others. and i really like how at the end of the raids, he (or what functions as him) was able to stand up to his abuser... "who made me that way?" is such an incredible line for him. he doesn't blame himself for who he is, he has broken through her psychic implants that compelled him to venerate her, and it's such a perfect puncture of athena's god complex. SHE MADE HIM THAT WAY. and she LOST because of him.

but what i think i love most about erich is that he is the one ancient we meet that knows the WoL more than azem. everyone else we meet is always like "azem, azem, my beloved friend azem" and/or just sees the WoL as an extension of azem (or is venat, who is in a class of her own). which.. isn't necessarily wrong, lmao, but i was so touched when erich called the WoL his friend and said he hoped to see them again and never even mentioned azem. not that i mind the function of azem in the plot, but the difference from the norm was very noticeable and sweet.

it was also cool to be on the other side of the typical ancient/sundered relationship, where we know the ancient form of that soul much better than their reincarnation. i think the whole raid questline worked well as a coda to endwalker (especially since the patch msq has been more about what's ahead than tying up loose ends): athena as the warped reflection of venat, erich as a parallel to the WoL (and all modern people), an ancient trying to take the body of a sundered reincarnation for their own past glory and the sundered once again prevailing and claudien getting to live his life... erich getting to resolve his story in the aetherial sea, and pass on peacefully.

i like erich's story so much. my buddy erich :)

Fandom isn't one size fits all, and there is no one right way to do it. So find what works for you, and don't worry about all of the outside noise. It doesn't matter how everyone else does fandom.
