it must have sucked for helena to be told to her face that the reason she wasn't able to fool Irving was because she was cruel. helena who knows she is cruel, who's able to admit to mark s that she didn't like who she was on the outside, who is stealing her innie's place just to feel a crumb of the affection and kindness she is denied outside of the severed floor. to be told that her cruelty is impossible to miss, that it is obvious to anyone who is paying attention. she wasn't trying to be kind- she was trying to be helly r, and fundamentally misunderstood that helly r and helena are different because helly r isn't cruel.

helena gets the abrasiveness right, the intensity, the flirting, the anger. but she doesn't get that helly r is able to have all that without pointing it like a weapon at someone else. helena knows how to be nice, but not kind. and she was loved for a brief moment, and she knows it's only because she was able to pretend to be someone else, and she wasn't even good at it.

love the detail that mark and gemma met in a library, surrounded by books, and connected over literature/knowledge, something that is forbidden on the severed floor. something that you wouldn't even know about outie mark at first glance, because he's essentially buried anything that reminded him of that part of his life in his basement. innie mark is so attached to ricken's book when he finds it because thirst for knowledge is in mark's nature. it's no coincidence that when he takes the book out, ms casey appears behind him in 1x05, and this moment is highlighted again in 2x07. likewise, ms casey is inquisitive and is always asking questions because she just wants to know more. down on the testing floor, gemma is given books to read to keep her sane. the piles of books in the montage, shelves of books in their home office. innie mark's reaction when he found out he used to be a teacher. i know people talk about love transcending severance when it comes to people, but their shared love for the pursuit of knowledge transcends severance as well.
