When he was alive, George Gilles de la Tourette was shot in the neck by a disgruntled patient who claimed he hypnotized her without her consent but was later revealed to have psychosis, so granted, she didn’t have Tourette Syndrome but she definitely tried giving him her diagnosis back to the man.

I think that person is here to troll, their only posts are from this month and about tics being caused by demons or saying disabilities shouldn't exist (I think they mean like as a concept but obviously that's not how it works, and it just leads to ableism). so either they are trolling for attention or don't know what they are talking about in the slightest.

Hello everyone! A blog with the username @/hidingfromkim has been brought to my attention. They're claiming that people with tics/Tourette's have "demons latching onto unclean spirits," and have accused multiple users of faking their disability.

This is the first time I'm seeing them, but from the responses of other users, this doesn't seem like the first time she's done this. Please report her!! This is incredibly harmful and rude to the community.

i totally agree, i honestly don’t want to give my tics any more attention than necessary. slowly people got used to me responding to “What was that?” with “Just a tic” and no further elaboration.

I hate it so much when people ask me to repeat my vocal ticks, when they didn't understand what it just said.

no I won't repeat something that has no bearing on our conversation, is cringe to repeat because I don't know if you knew it's a tick or not (it's actually very easy to tell if it's a tick or not but idk), and is just generally uncomfortable because just saying random shit is uncomfortable.

Its honestly terrifying that I'm the one educating healthcare professionals on my medical condition. When I was hospitalised for my tics I was attended to by psychiatrists and asked questions about whether I was hearing voices and similar such things. To those who don't know Tourettes is a neurological condition, I should have seen neurologist rather than psychologists and psyciatrists. I was put on anti psychotics for months that ruined my mental health and did nothing to improve my tics. The wariness from this situation led to me refusing and hating medications for period of time, making situations far worse.

A psychiatrist diagnosed me with Tourettes. He was not qualified to do that, only a neurologist can diagnose Tourettes. When I went to see a neurologist who we were told specialised in tics Upon arrival, after months and months of waiting we were told:

oh yeah sorry this is too complex for me. I don't really know anything about tourettes.

I've been forced to educate myself because I just cannot trust doctors.

I've been told things from "oh everyone gets that" too you just need to sleep more, eat spinach, you're too stressed about school.

It's scary when the people who hold your life in their hands don't understand the basics of your medical condition.

My situation is better than most. I have been extremely privileged where my family could afford private health and the many treatments, specialists and medication I need to not suffer and be able to live my life. This is how bad it is for me, you can imagine how much worse it is for people who cannot access this healthcare. People who don't have the option to go to the hospital in case of emergency, people who can't afford to switch doctors until they find one that takes them seriously, people who can't afford medications.

also, there are so many quirks to both the town of Nightvale and Pawnee. Like canonically one town's population is unable to use a water fountain like a human being and the other is constantly warned against entering the dog park.

So fucking true. I can drive a hunk of metal from 2008 without a single chirp, as long as there is music to sing along to. But if there are one too many sounds at work I have to fight the most powerful urge to stick my entire arm into the deep fryer while whistling a jingle from a 10-year-old commercial.

Like what the fuck kind of disability is that? A goddamn dysfunctional sensory “Would you Rather?” button.

Tics sound so made up. Like yeah. I will repeat things until I’m out of breath. And twitch and stuff and snap my fingers weirdly. Can I control it? That seriously depends on your definition of ‘control’ because it’s somewhere between an itch and a compulsion and literally completely out of my control. I routinely yeet my pencils. But I can play bass guitar and you would absolutely think I should be kept as far as possible from sewing or something like welding but actually that’s when I’m in the most control of my body. The most common treatment/accommodation is to literally just ignore it and distract yourself with fine motor tasks. Tell me that doesn’t sound fake. This is a made up thing but it’s not. This is a real thing it just sounds so made up.
