Challengers: Queer Subtext Under the Straight Male Gaze
I like watching youtube reaction videos of movies I've seen.
It's interesting watching straight guys react to Challengers (2024) because the characters in the film spend a lot of time straddling the line between homosocial and homosexual behavior, and you get to see how these straight male reactors choose to define that line, themselves.
For example, there's a moment in the movie where the two male leads talk about an act of mutual masturbation they did when sharing a dorm room at a boarding school at the age of twelve.
What fascinates me is how none of the straight male youtubers reacting to this scene perceived the act of mutual masturbation as gay, in and of itself.
Multiple straight men responded to the scene saying something along the lines of, "That's the kind of shit you take to your grave," or "You would never ever get me admit to doing something like this."
The fact that the characters jerked off together as kids wasn't necessarily queer, in their view. But the fact that the characters were willing to talk about it in front of a woman they were both romantically pursuing — that's the part these straight male viewers perceived as queer.
The verbal acknowledgement of the act is what made it queer.
Intricate rituals.

Medea - Lars Von Trier - (1988)
Talking about its details, realizing how the words flow in my excited brain, completely transforms my first opinion. That's what I love about cinema, is its immortality, the way a story can take thousands of forms and never cease to be wonderful.

six directors, one semester
i'm a film major taking a semester off to do a study away program and want to use my time to do a deep dive into the filmographies of six global directors, to expand my artistic horizons, learn about directorial development over different careers, and have some starting points for film research when i go back to school.
i chose these directors because i already have some appreciation for their work and want to learn more about their styles and roles in film history; additionally, the program i am in this semester is a buddhist studies program, and each of these director's works touch upon spirituality in a way i find intruiging.
here are the six: wim wenders, satyajit ray, andrei tarkovsky, robert bresson, yasujiro ozu, ingmar bergman
this 'project' constitutes about 75 films in about as many days, but i hope to bolster it with supportive readings and materials.

i will post reviews/thoughts on each film on my page as i watch, so feel free to follow along if you're interested in learning a bit about film history with me, and please share any recommendations for content that would help me explore these filmmakers or the themes of their work! i also have much more content at my letterboxd (https://letterboxd.com/lucn/) so, you know.
vive le cinéma!
