Artist's Statement
Prior to this class I had used my camera to capture shots of memories, events and friends. My goal was to take pictures of the world as I could see it. My paints on the other hand, I used to show off the world I saw inside my head. However, over the course of this class, I was given a lot more time with my camera and I began to change my mind. During this time I began to see that my camera was not so different from my other art supplies. My photographs had the ability to do something more than freeze what I saw with my eyes. They could also offer a look inside my head. With photographs I could express Ideas and feelings. I can use a combination of editing, angles, and lighting, to express my ideas. I have the ability to control what people see, and how they see it. I understand my camera to the point where I can capture a crisp shot of a bee on a flower, or catch a blurred shot of someone in a hallway, depending on what feeling I’m going for in an image. My favorite types of images to shoot are those that seem to have a story behind them. These shots are ones that look like something you technically could see out in the world, yet the angles are more like those of a movie. You are far too close to the subject for it to have been seen simply passing by. They demand your attention and ultimately grab hold of your curiosity. I want people to look at my work and feel something. These photos truly are a door to the world inside my mind. From now on I won’t neglect the camera as a tool for creating art. I have so many photos still left to take.
