By some miracle, the doctor explains, they escaped with only minor injuries. Some burns, a few scratches and “several small wounds. We’re not sure what caused them.”

“Wounds?”

“Small holes in your ear lobes. Possibly they were old wounds and unrelated to the accident, but either way, our doctors were able to heal them for you. There’s not even any scarring.”

The human pauses. Thinks for a minute. “Wait… you unpierced my ears?!”

allow me to tell you of the grave error i made yesterday. it was 8pm. i was cooking moroccan stew. needed to let it simmer for 25 minutes before i added the chickpeas. i shall go upstairs, thought i, and take a shower, and leave the chickpeas on the counter to drain. puddles the cat is sleeping near the stove. i briefly consider locking her out of the kitchen - but surely even she, leviathan of unconquerable appetites, will not concern herself with hard, drained, uncooked chickpeas. surely not.

with this set-up in mind, what do you imagine i found when i came back downstairs?

genuinely curios why you have an asbestos pit, assuming it doesn’t require clearance.

like a pile of asbestos isn’t doing shit for fire retardant, so what is a pile of osha problems doing there.

at some point in The Ancient Past there was an asbestos removal job big enough that it was deemed more cost effective to just create an on-site asbestos disposal pit than it was to pay someone else to dispose of it for us.

we still get monthly air quality checks to make sure that we arent getting exposed to airborne asbestos in the building. we failed one a few months ago, and it was a biiiiiig to do. hazmat crew in, sealed off area, cleaned it all up. only time ive seen a whole crew of contractors able to get into the building. i dont know if they were able to declassify that part, or if those guys all had clearance, or what, but they did their job and kept us safe and for that i am relieved.

the pit isnt related to any actual work. its just a weirdly flat meadow now. pleasantly green and attractive to deer.

the old guys said it was buried like, 10 feet deep, wrapped in plastic, and that the on site fire crew sprays it with their hoses every few weeks to keep the plants there alive/prevent dust from blowing around. osha isnt very worried about it.

If you have a friend that wants to vent to you but doesn't want solutions but you are a solutions-oriented person, may I suggest Silly Solutions (TM)? For instance, whenever my friend complains about the people at her job being dumb, I remind her that if only one of us had studied engineering, we could create a giant hippo robot with laser eyes to destroy them. It fulfills my need to offer a solution, doesn't violate her boundary of not wanting to problem solve, AND it cheers us both up!

Me: Yes.

90yo: Are you looking to be a boy or a man or a woman?

Me: I'm a man.

90yo: You'd be very pretty as a girl.

Me: Thank you.

90yo: You're a girl with a beard?

Me: It's just my face.

90yo: You should shave it so people will see you're a girl.

Me: That's why I grow it.

Me: Yes, they were a bit low.

I think. Perhaps. Given what we saw in Rapport. It might be worth considering that ART continually oversteps in its relationship with Murderbot not because it's trying to be an asshole, but because it is not used to being treated as an actual authority figure. Like. ART has to carry around crew members it doesnt like. It has to play nice and dumb with corporates. Iris thinks of it as her younger sibling. I think there's a significant chance part of why ART is SO demanding and SO selfish when Murderbot first meets it is that's how it makes space for itself. It barges into conversations to remind people that it's there, hi, im in the room with you too. It takes things without asking because asking gets you told no. Its not going to play nice and pretend to be a normal bot pilot around its crew, it has to do that enough already. So its pushy, and it oversteps, because it's used to having to fight to be heard. ART isn't good at talking to bots, because its so used to having to jostle with humans for autonomy that it inadvertently steamrolls people who don't fight back.

It fucks up its first meeting with Murderbot because it isnt expecting Murderbot to perceive it as not only a threat but a superior. A lot of the conflict in their relationship, fact, comes from the fact that Murderbot doesn't see them as equals but ART does. And ART does hold a lot of power over Murderbot, but all the times it fucks up in their relationship aren't from trying to abuse that power but from being unaware (or willfully ignorant) of how that power imbalance affects it. I think ART knows it asks for too much, but it assumes that it needs to to end up with what it actually wants. Murderbot takes everything it says at face value, and ART is clearly getting better over the course of their relationship at not making demands just for the sake of asserting its agency. ART very clearly does not want Murderbot to meekly go along with everything it says. It's not acting the way it does because it expects compliance, but because it refuses to be compliant itself.
