Being solo in the backcountry is one of the only times in my life that I’ve been able to exist as a body and a person without worrying about how other people might try to claim my body as their own. Crossing frozen rivers on my hands and knees, curling up in my sleeping bag, waking at dawn in a bed of dew—these are the moments when the shadow of that vulnerability fades, and the only thing that exists is the beautiful, indifferent landscape and my own strength and skills. Going alone into the wilderness is one of the ways I reclaim myself. It is an act of joy and an act of self-defense.

Writing begins with forgiveness. Let go of the shame about how long it’s been since you last wrote, the clenching fear that you’re not a good enough writer, the doubts over whether or not you can get it done

Sometimes you have to look around at the life you’ve made and sort of nod at it, like someone moving their head up and down to a tune they like.

British Muslims and the need for safe spaces
British Muslims and the need for safe spaces
by Zain Dada and Zainab Rahim You got a lot of societies and governments/ Tryin’ to be God, wishing that they were God. – Mos Def We emerge from within the fumes of a burning London building which has ripped into our sense of home. The criminal state neglect that led to the Grenfell Tower disaster last Wednesday and the post-traumatic aftermath have re-defined what it means to live in safety, to…

A general election is a such a cynical move on Theresa May's part. Government should be focusing on trying to make Brexit a success, instead of spaffing money on campaigns. MPs should be looking for how to work together to try and stabilise the political turmoil both locally and internationally, not looking to bulldoze opposition out of the way. This is greed, and fear and a complete disregard for the mental health of a country. There is already enough turmoil creating worry, enough unknowns about the future, enough genuine concerns about whether people will even be able to live here in a few years; Theresa May should be working towards creating a government that is skilled, informed and focussed on serving the people, having MPs run around the country, disrupting the work they are doing is not the way to go about this.
I'm genuinely at a loss currently on working out how to mobilise around this. I don't know where to turn, whose voices to shine the light on, whose cry I can rally round. Seven weeks is no time, what an utterly selfish move. You don't have to be this person, Theresa, you can still change.
General Election: Seven weeks to save Britain
General Election: Seven weeks to save Britain
By Maurice Mcleod Follow @mowords So Theresa May has done it. After saying the country needed stability and that she would let Parliament run its course, she’s had her head turned by positive opinion polls and she’s going for a land-grab general election on 8 June. With all theatre she is becoming known for, she announced on the steps of Downing Street this morning (Tues), that she will be…

The crush of people and the volume of chatter at Monday's #StandUpToTrump demo at 10 Downing Street was quite something. Endlessly disappointed in Prime Minister Theresa May's weak stance on condemnation, but encouraged that so many other politicians are speaking out against this distorted and ugly world view.
