Drone attacks at an Oil company in Saudi Arabia
In the footage I saw, a huge blaze at Abqaiq, site of Aramco's largest oil processing plant, Saudi Aramco is a Saudi Arabian Oil Company, while a second drone attack started fires in the Khurais oilfield.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks in Buqyaq and the Khurais oil field, though Yemen's Houthi rebels previously launched drone assaults deep inside.
The fires are now under control at both facilities, state media said, based on the internet web page I saw.
It wasn't clear if there were any injuries in the attacks, nor what effect it would have on oil production. The attack also likely will heighten tensions further across the wider Persian Gulf in the middle of a confrontation between the US and Iran over its unraveling nuclear deal with world powers.
A spokesman for the Iran-aligned Houthi group in Yemen said it had deployed 10 drones in the attacks.
Online videos apparently shot in Buqyaq included the sound of gunfire in the background and flames shooting out of the Abqaiq oil processing facility. Smoke rose over the skyline and glowing flames could be seen a distance away.
The military spokesman, Yahya Sarea, told al-Masirah TV, which is owned by the Houthi movement and is based in Beirut, that further attacks could be expected in the future.
The fires began after the sites were "targeted by drones," the Interior Ministry said in a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency. It said an investigation into the attack was underway.
He said that the attack was one of the biggest operations the Houthi forces had undertaken inside Saudi Arabia and was carried out in "cooperation with the honorable people inside".
Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil giant, did not immediately respond to questions from The Associated Press. The kingdom hopes soon to offer a sliver of the company in an initial public offering.
Based on the internet web page, the Saudi officials have not yet commented on who they think is behind the attacks.
The plant has been targeted in the past by militants. Al-Qaida-claimed suicide bombers tried but failed to attack the oil complex in February 2006.
They said that "At 04:00 (1:00 GMT), the industrial security teams of Aramco started dealing with fires at two of its facilities in Abqaiq and Khurais as a result of... drones," the official Saudi Press Agency reported.
This could affect our resources of oil not only in their country, but also the other countries. Because oil or petroleum and other are now increasing the price. This means we need to conserve it.
