THERE IS SO MUCH THAT THE cowboy can tell him, he could go on and on about his life, the one he was living now and the one that he had back when he was technically alive. he could tell him about that night. how his father had come out of the house like he'd been POSSESSED, gun in hand, a wild look in his eyes that the man standing in front of time now had learned to FEAR.
rian could tell him about death. too many arms, too many heads, a shroud of a creature... but he knows the other man won't BELIEVE him. he finds himself wondering if he will walk away from this conversation, thinking he knows him any better. the cowboy knows he won't. ❝ i wanted t'have a second chance at life. got it... but EVERYTHIN' comes with a price. ❞
hazel hues stick on blues, now, and he finds himself stuck in them. like he can't move away from tim even if he wanted to. it made his heart twist. ❝ consider yourself lucky, then. ❞ that raw edge to his voice is back, and he shoves a thumb through the belt loop of his pants. ❝ think it's my turn. ❞
tim knows the look of a man hiding something, he knows what it looks like when you want to find your way out of admitting something that you’ve kept hidden for so long. his family didn’t have much money, none really, but he’d still caught his own reflection enough times. and he sees some of it in rian now, not all of it, but some. more of a man weighing his options then anything else.
and tim knows better than to push, has felt a fist against his cheek more times than he knows how to count, and more than a few of them came from pushing for an answer his old man didn’t want to give him. so he stands still, he leans back with his eyes up so that he’s meeting rian’s gaze now that it’s an option. tim’s eyes are bright, a vivid blue that he’s starting to learn how to use to keep people focused on him when he wants them to be. didn’t have much cause to do so before.
“what kinda deal you makin’?” he doesn’t move away, doesn’t change his stance in the slightest, feeling a little bit like an animal caught in a trap but it’s hardly the first time, you struggle you just make it worse. “never made a deal with death, no, it seemed to have more use for me on this side.”
