Explanation:
As stated by Henry Matisse, “An artist must possess nature.” The following quote translates into this piece as nature is used as an endless source for creativity and imagination. In a perfect fusion of nature and man kinds ingenuity, this atrium I photographed exemplifies just that. Although beautiful creations, such as this atrium, can exist thanks to mankind, the redline is set as a warning and a reminder. People have the ability to utilize nature for its beauty and inspiration , but the thin redline is meant to represent the fine line between utilization and the inevitable destruction of nature by mankind.

1. Although this piece of art is repeatedly used, its beauty and originality remains the same to me. With Mount Fuji in the background, its meant to symbolize the soul of Japan. Hokusai effectively places the "soul of Japan" in the middle of the piece for emphasis as it is about to become victim to crashing waves. The waves, which take up a majority of the art work, are meant to symbolize a change in culture and influences to Japan. I believe the symbolized message can translate into art itself as its continuously evolving and influenced by different cultures and influences. I agree that ye form art and that art forms us since there is an influence from culture.

For my abstract, non representational artwork, I decided to make it about my passion for cooking and baking. Flour, yeast, and eggs are all ingredients needed to make things, such as bread, but when separate from each other they only exist as purposeless ingredients. Work and dedication is needed in order to make these ingredients come together and create something. This same logic can translate into life as nothing is achieved without the use of work and dedication.

“Describe physical qualities (the facts)”:
Created by Peter Paul Rubens in 1625, this beautiful art piece is titled The Gathering of the Manna. Varying from vibrant red to dull blue, this oil on canvas is displayed in the dimensions 192 x 162. This absolutely large painting portrays several people, all being displayed larger than life. On the very right, dressed in red, is an old man that resembles the biblical character, Moses. He is shown reaching above, calling for the heavens. Around the person dressed in red are multiple figures all doing different things. Some people are seen doing daily tasks while others are portrayed doing devious actions, such as the person in the middle that is painted in darker colors. The entire scene is captured between two detailed gold columns, which helps represent rhythm and unity within this piece.
“This part is all about you”:
When I first stumbled upon this large oil on canvas, I was purely astonished by its overall size. The vibrant red and parallel gold columns displayed on both sides of the canvas is what caught my attention. The art piece’s influence, which being religion, and its theme is accelerated thanks to the grand size size of the art work. While viewing the painting, neither me or my friend could even begin to fathom how long it took the artist to create something like this.
“Thinking”:
Notoriously known for his work throughout the 17th century, Peter Paul Rubens was a flemish artist and was looked up to as a pioneer when it came to baroque paintings. This can be accredited by his revolutionary ingenuity, energy, and development of pathos. This painting was created and purposed to be part of a series known as the Triumph of the Eucharist and would specifically be commissioned by infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia, who was the daughter of King Philip II of Spain. Many of Ruben’s art pieces, especially the Gathering of the Manna, are heavily influenced by religious values, which made his projects to be major interests for Catholic Spain. In this one in particular, religious influences are seen as one of the figures shares a resemblance to the biblical character, Moses, because of his vibrant dressing in red robes. The purpose of Rubens to incorporate religion into his art reveals he was a religious follower and that this piece’s main message is also religiously influenced too. As the man dressed in red reaches for the heavens, Rubens recreated a biblical scene in Exodus.
“the last (most important) part”:
Personally, I chose to analyze this piece based off of its biblical importance. As a fellow religious believer, I understand that this piece was significant in 17th century as catholicism was widespread, especially in Spain. When looked upon in current times, this piece not only hold historical significance because of its influence by catholicism, it is a refresher for any viewer that the Israelites of the world went through tremendous hardships.

Journaling
-Unity and Variety: Unity is when things appear as if they are complementary together. Variety is the opposite on the other hand, as it is when things appear to contrast from one another.
An example of Unity and Variety is seen in "concentric Circles", by Wassily Kandinsky. The circles unify together in terms of their shape, but they also vary because of their color.
Tumblr media
2. Balance:
-Similar matching from both parallel sides.
An example of balance is seen in "The Last Supper", made by Leonardo da Vinci. Although the symmetry is not perfectly symmetrical, the cross point is Jesus and the table is equal in length on both sides.
Tumblr media
3. Emphasis and Subordination:
-Emphasis is when a specific element in art is forced to be the main objective of focus. Subordination ,on the other hand, is when an artist purposely uses tactics to draw away a viewers attention.
An example of emphasis and subordination is seen in "The Mona Lisa", by Leonardo da Vinci. Mona Lisa is made the emphasis as she takes up the entire portrait, dead and center. The background is made as the subordination due to its dullness in color and blur.
Tumblr media
4. Directional Forces:
-Used as an artistic tactic by artists, directional forces are intentional lines or paths in artwork.
An example of directional forces is seen in "The Creation of Adam", which is made by Michelangelo. Directional forces are evident by the simple stretching of the arms in the piece as they touch in the center of the canvas.
Tumblr media
5. Repetition and Rhythm
-In repetition, as a specific aspect in art is reused, it creates familiarity and draws the attention of the viewer. As for rhythm, it Is merely seen in forms such as music, but is mostly seen through repetition.
An example of repetition and rhythm is seen in "Garbhadhatu Mandala". The idolized figures are heavily repeated in a continuous pattern.
Tumblr media
6. Scale and Proportion
-Scale is when a comparison is made between an object's size and another object. Proportion is when a comparison is made between an object's size and the overall thing.
An example of scale and proportion is seen in this art piece called "Curiosity". The main subject is the baby chicken as it the largest object, dead in center, when compared to the various objects next to it.

2. Writing and Looking
Tumblr media
In Utagawa Hiroshige's "Shono Hakuu", the unique art piece is made through a Japanese art tradition. Popularized in the 19th centuries, woodblock printing is a complex japans art process and how this specific art piece was made. At first glance, the colors seem as if they were achieved through the use of oil paint and the slanted lines crosshatching with the blended water seem to be the work of fine paint strokes; however, this was all achieved by the artist printing special blocks which contain specific color and lines.
3. Connecting Art To Your World
In my personal experience, a moment in my life where I was affected by color would be when I first saw snow. During a trip to Colorado, the place where I was staying had unexpected snow overnight, meaning the next morning was quite the surprise. The scenery had an overall saturation of white as everything was layered in white. The intensity of that specific color overwhelmed me, especially since I was born and raised in Florida my entire life. Although Florida is more vibrant in color in terms of scenery, I will never forget my first experience seeing snow due to its intense beauty.

Again, I would like to apologize for my lack of artistic skills, but I still went along with the rubric guidelines. The gym is a sentimental place for me as it allowed me to build my confidence in life. Going to the gym has also allowed me to physically better myself which is a plus.

About the portrait- The person represented in this art piece is known as “The desperate man”, created by Gustave Courbet. Based off his hand placement and facial expressions, the overall feeling being expressed is distressed. The purpose behind its creation can vary, depending on the viewer, but personally I believe it was created for the personal artists sake in attempt to captivate his own feelings.
About the landscape- The location of this landscape is not fully disclosed; however, based on context clues, it can be guessed that the setting of the landscape takes place somewhere in Japan. The cherry blossom trees are very vibrant in the art piece and they are primarily associated with places in Japan.
About the still life- Consisting of a skull, flower, and compass, this still life painting speaks many words. To begin, it can be decided that the skull is the focal point of the painting based off of its size and is meant to symbolize death. Accompanied by the flower and compass, they both symbolize different things as well. For example, the flower is most likely meant to symbolize life and nature while the compass most likely represents direction in life. All together, it can be interpreted the main theme behind this still life is that all directions in life eventually lead to death.

1. I was assigned slide #26, which is James Turrell's "Aten Reign" (2013). The art piece has variable dimensions, depending on the time of day and refraction of sunlight. The piece itself is created by using LED lights and natural sunlight.
James Turrell is an artist most known for his works involving lights creating beautiful architectures.
The "Aten Reign"was specifically created for the hall of the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
The artwork is purposely meant to be the ideal meditation place for its visitors.
All of the artist's work is meant to reveal how vision intersects with the brain.
The art piece is surrounded by a core of daylight which is followed by five elliptical rings of shifting, colored lights.
After doing research on the art piece and the artist himself, my perspective is surprisingly similar to my initial impression. The varying dark blue colors presented the art piece as relaxing and somewhat somber at first glance. After doing research, the piece is meant to serve as a safe meditative place for its viewers all while it reimagines the rotunda of Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic building. Overall, the viewing experience is the main emphasis of the art piece as the vibrant colors are meant to influence the thought processing of the viewer.

This paining has existed inside of my house for as long as I can remember and although I do not think it is visually appealing to look at, it serves  a purpose. I personally believe the painting is symbolic of showing people can act different behind their fake smile since the clown is covered in makeup. I believe this painting may have been created by the artist using oil based paints. The painting is also messy when it comes to blending and lines and a reason to this could possibly be to symbolize the imperfection of what it means to be actually human.
3. Hello, my name is Nicholas, sometimes called Nick, and I am currently 19 years old. My primary gender is male and I was born and raised here in the Bradenton/ Sarasota area. My ethnicity consists of a combination of primarily Filipino and then part Greek and Scottish. For fun I like to either cook and bake or work out. As of right now, I am not apart of any group organization; however, I used to be in various medical and math clubs in high school, as well as marching band. As for a job, I work part time as a server. What makes me unique is my extroverted introvert personality. I naturally like being around other people, but at the same time I prefer to be quiet.

This picture encompasses my lack of creativity, sorry. In my defense however, the picture reveals my appreciation for vibrant and exotic colors and art overall as this picture was taken at the art fairgrounds in St. Pete.
