During the press tour for The Barrens (2021) Shark Puppy members expressed their nervous excitement for what they felt was a departure from many of their earlier albums. While they are masters at diving deep into their own pasts with autobiographical lyrics and haunting metaphors for childhood and growing up this album marks a distinct shift in their content.
On the subject, drummer and vocalist Bev Marsh had this to say, “We wanted to do something completely different, our lyrics will always be about us because we’re the ones writing them, but we thought it would be fun to put those feelings into something new. Fairy tales, myths, even characters we’ve created in our own minds. It’s all over the place.”
Certainly Shark Puppy is known for genre-jumping, and The Barrens is no exception, the folksy and toned down arrangements evoke feelings similar to their early indie albums with a lyrical maturity worthy of their veteran status in the music industry.
