I'm working on my first interior related assignment at my job (internship), and it's making moodboards!
Doesn't sound like much, but graphic design is my weakness and I feel insecure about my styling skills. Anyway my boss liked it. Now I'm making a couple extra moodboards based on the preferences of the client

Friday 13·5·22
I haven't posted since December '21, because of deadlines and I may have forgotten it😅
Anyway, I'm currently busy with making a design for a repurpose assignment for an old factory (which is now in possession of my college).
There were 3 types of functions for this assignment: medical practice Centre, office (law firm) and grand café, and im making my design for the grand café.
I chose for a cafe with a couple office spaces for students and employees (from around the neighbourhood), so they can work and eat, but also relax

13·Dec·21
Hello hello hello, im currently working on a poster for my theatre decor maquette. This has to be presented Wednesday the 15th.
I'm still writing my daily logs, but I might need to put that on hold. Idk if I have to write it in Dutch or if I can continue in English. My teacher send this dilemma/ problem to the examination committee, so hopefully I hear from them soon.
It's almost 4am and I'm finally going to sleep. Have a great day/night!

3·Sept·21| Practical class
Today is Friday, and every Friday I have online lessons. In the morning and in the afternoon, I have lectures about art history. After the last lecture, there is a practical class (I have the translation makes sense).
During this lesson, I had to work in a group with two classmates. The assignment was to find examples of shape, colour, space, light and material (on the internet). From these images we had to make a collage. Also, we had to explain/define the aspects. We didn’t write this down, but we defined it when we were asked in class.
Tumblr media
Upper left: shape, bottom left: material, middle: light, upper right: colour and bottom right: space
This was a good and easy assignment to get familiar with the aspects. It wasn’t difficult because we had to use the internet. Though, it can get tricky when trying to search a certain aspect, because you won’t be shown just paintings or sculptures, but all kinds of things.
Other than that, there is not much to say about this assignment, but I can tell you that working together with my classmates went well. The tasks were well divided; one of us did one aspect and most of the editing, while my other classmate and I did two aspects. We also gave each other feedback on our searched/ edited images.

1·Sept·21 | Professionalisation
This was a short lesson. I had to make an analysis of myself. This was based of ± 12 skills, and I had mark whether this skill was on a level between high and low . To be honest, I don’t think I filled this out realistically. I don’t know why but looking back at what I filled in that day (I am writing this some days later), I see that I filled it in too fast, I didn’t fully understand a couple words or maybe I didn’t take it very serious.
That is also the reason why this is a very short post and why I am not showing my results.

1·Sept·21 | Seminar
Today, I started off with a short exercise where I was handed small blocks (those wooden toy blocks), and I had to arrange them and then draw them. With this assignment, the focus was on my perspective skills, which wasn’t the best. This assignment also had to be made in different ways; draw the way you draw and shadows only. But there was no improvement.
For the second exercise, my teachers arranged cardboard boxes in the middle of the classroom, and I had to draw that with charcoal. This exercise was the same as the first one, but then on a much bigger scale.

_______________________________________________
This lesson wasn’t bad. I didn’t really like the first assignment, because the sketches of the blocks didn’t turn out great and the one(s) that looked okay (or more than okay) took me a bit too long for a “short” exercise. The second assignment was more fun to do. I had never worked with charcoal before. The first sketch was definitely not good. You can see that the perspective was way off, and I didn’t add enough shadows. Anyhow, I am very proud of my second sketch. My teacher gave me a tip to draw a simple box as guideline and then add the actual boxes. This way, drawing perspective was a lot easier. However, the proportions of the boxes aren’t correct compared to the actual boxes. Besides that, I see now that the lighting isn’t very clear. I may have added to much shadowing and/ or erased too little from the shadows. In reality, the sun shone much brighter than you see on my sketch.
There is a lot I can improve. I need to challenge myself, both with time and/ or difficult objects. So, for the next times that I am going to do something like this, I need to work in simple steps; 1) guideline box, 2) add smaller boxer for where the objects are, 3) outline the objects in the smaller boxes, and 4) add shadows and highlights.

First seminar of the year! | 30·Aug·21
Today was my first day at college, and as an interior design student. Firstly, my classmates and i were informed about the first year; what we could expect, etc. After that was done, we got our first seminar.
During this lesson, I was instructed to draw certain topics from my memory, within a couple of minutes. When the time was up, my teachers made a quick sketch of that topic or they drew what was most common design of that topic.
Tumblr media
These are 9/11 drawings I made. I picked my best and my worst ones.
After that, there was another 'speed' drawing exercise. The second exercise was to copy a crumpled-up piece of paper. The first time, my teacher gave no other instructions that to copy it, the second time, my teachers told us to only work with shadows. We were allowed to outline the paper lightly (as guidelines)
Tumblr media
You can probably see that the picture on the right is the second one I made, and this turned out way better that the first one.
The last exercise was to paint the outlines of random objects, that was placed in the middle of the classroom, so that the objects on paper were blank. As a result, i made a composition of a cut-out of the still live by painting only the residual shape.
(i wanted to show it, but i don't remember where i had put the folder, where i saved this residual shape painting. If i don't forget it, i will post it later.)
____________________________________________________________
I did not really know what to expect for my first day, but I’m nit complaining. I really like speed drawing, both the eleven quick sketches and the drawing the crumbled-up paper. However, I didn’t really like the last exercise.
I had no problems with painting it. That was a bit tricky because we had to work with a large paintbrush. But I didn’t like it because I don’t really understand the concept of shape and residual shape in the way of the exercise. We had gotten an assignment where said exercise had to be done at home and then we had to make something of the residual shape…
It’s not that I don’t understand the concept at all, by the way. For me, shape and residual shape is easier to understand if I look it up. I saw lots of examples, but mostly they were those images of illusions; two faces that show a vase in the middle of it. Still, I had so much trouble making something of the residual shape. I believe that this is because I have to think more out of the box, and just start with making something and not just wait for ideas. Since I’m not the best at starting something without a reference or an idea, this is a quite difficult for me. Thus, this is definitely something I want and can improve by lots of practising.

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog!
I am Chaz (my nickname (it's pronounced as Shaz)), I'm 19 years old and I'm from The Netherlands. I am a first year Interior Design & Styling (IDS) student at the Jan des Bouvrie Academy in Deventer.
Here, I will post about my journey to become an interior designer, and hopefully also an interior architect, hence my blog name; "Iter academiae" it means "A journey of academia", aka an academic journey.
I'll try to upload a weekly report e.g. about my assignments, projects, experiences, etc. This will include (self) reflections with my honest opinions, this might include some mild language (I will try to keep it clean though).
My blog will serve my logbook, so I can track my development, this might also help (future) interior design/ architecture student.
I hope you'll enjoy reading this whether it is for your own development or just because you're interested!
Anyway, thank you for visiting my blog and/ or for reading :)
- Chaz
