Headcanon for Gwyndolin
(tw: abuse by parents)
(spoilers for Dark Souls 1)
So I’ve been thinking about Gwyndolin’s freaky snake legs. I’ve heard about the snake legs being an intimidation tactic and that the Gwyndolin we fight is an illusion. But I got one better.
What if Gwyndolin was experimented on by Seath?
Think about it. Gwyn’s objectively a shit, narrow-minded dad if the Nameless King’s history is anything to go off on. Not to mention arbitrarily deciding that your son is actually a girl because he was born under the full moon and forcing him to dress as a woman is a pretty shitty thing to do. Finally, I personally think that Gwynevere ran away from Anor Londo to escape her abusive dad. I think if she actually supported her dad’s endeavours, she would’ve stayed and helped Gwyndolin in some capacity.
Also Gwyndolin’s snake feet are very reminiscent of the frankly terrifying Pisaca that slither around at the bottom of the Duke Archive’s jail tower. The Archive Tower Giant Cell Key heavily implies Piasca to have been maidens kidnapped and experimented upon by Seath. Dark Souls has always had a running theme of women being more attuned to magic, with the end-game vendors of Miracles and Pyromancies being women. So I guess Seath imagined the same would apply to Sorceries. However, there was one issue. These maidens were human, Undead maybe, but human nonetheless. What he needed was a god.
So that leaves Gwyndolin all alone in Anor Londo with an Age of Fire-obsessed dad and a sorcery-obsessed scaleless dragon.
I wouldn’t put Gwyn above handing Gwyndolin over to Seath in an attempt to prolong the Age of Fire. Seath was probably ecstatic at the opportunity to experiment on not only a god, but one that was attuned to the sorceries he was trying to uncover the secrets of. Maybe he even tried to discover a more innate solution to his mortality. (because lets be honest, a breakable crystal is a very exploitable weakness) Perhaps he was trying to grow dragons from Gwyndolin and steal their scales from them. However something went wrong because as the Covetous Serpent Rings state: ‘ The serpent is an imperfect dragon and symbol of the Undead.’ So Gwyndolin was yet another failed project and left to writhe like the Pisaca with his snake feet.
The only comfort to be had is that the snakes (who are very likely sentient and not just vestigal appendages) and Gwyndolin probably have some bond through the fact that they’re both failed experiments. So at least he has some company during the end of the world.
(until Aldrich comes along lmaaaaao)

The benevolent sun shines its radiance upon Anor Londo, bestowing a gift to children with enough time to enjoy it. Specifically a group of young boys pretending to be knights outside a castle. All the youth armed with big sticks they found guarding a pile of rocks from a snake they deemed their dragon, all except a little pale prince named Gwyndolin.
Walking away from the laughter he wishes he was a part of he wipes away the tears welling in his eyes. The worst part was he probably could have made friends with them if he wasn’t scolded by his father to stay inside. Some could wonder if it was the fact that he was supposed to be a girl or if it was the face no one dared talk about, but to the lonely child it was just a cruel mystery. Sitting beside his window looking outward to everything he wished he was; the beauty of the sun and more so the kinship every other kid had.
Steering his tear soaked eyes away from the unreachable ideal life the outcast prince’s vision found something similar to himself. An ugly little caterpillar inching along the window sill. Unlike every other lifeform it makes its way towards Gwyndolin. Despite its unusual nature it still holds an evident charm. It was the kindest reflection he had ever seen of himself. Putting his hand down in front of the insect to let it see if it would still crawl to him the caterpillar offered the first gesture of friendship Gwyndolin had felt that wasn’t his from his sister. This little friend belonged in his life.
He excitedly made his way to his room to make a little home for the small companion. A little makeshift terrarium with leaves and sticks to help the caterpillar feel at home. Each day he would direct his attention and love to it. Sometimes Gwynevere would walk by just to see her little brother talk to it or simply hold it. It was the perfect friend to talk to. Every story had full engagement and never a tear ignored. Most importantly of all it never left. Always in a homeostasis of eating leaves or crawling in the mazes, Gwyndolin made for it out of random things he found in his room.
Until one autumn day it crawled on a particularly long teig above the leaves it lived in. Forming an unfamiliar pose dangling from the twig. Gwyndolin watched in awe as the creature slowly spun silk. It was as if it was the first time someone was leaving but giving him time to say his goodbyes and wishes. He cried out of loneliness for the first time in a month almost alerting his big sister who held him in times like this. Despite only being a few years older, she was almost a mother to him as she was one the few who were never scornful of Gwyndolin. When the crying child in her arms caught a hold of his breath she told him that this was normal. Sometimes things go away for a very long time, even loved ones.
His comforting autumn turned to the chilly quiet he was accustomed to. He swore to keep the coffin of little friend and guard the tomb of his first best friend. He knew his friend was still bundled up in a permanent bed of a chrysalis leaving a longing prince who still made sure it was safe.
As the slow sunsets became quick turns to long winter nights the prince would still tell the pod of bedtime stories. Ever since Gwynevere told him death is just sleeping for a long time he made sure it received the love he wished he had from a parent. Grief showed itself in many ways and Gwyndolin stayed in a constant state of denial. He could feel it in his heart that the caterpillar would rise once more like the sun he loved. The spring tears that dripped from the ice cycles mirrored Gwydolin’s. While picking flowers for the caterpillar his brother had to explain that some things never come back.
As the heartbroken prince was about to put away the memorial deemed “clutter” something was different about the caterpillars chrysalis. Something new emerged from it. Gwyndolin, who once cried tears of loneliness now cried tears of joy from the miracle before him. But it wasn’t the ugly creature he was accustomed to. It was always unique but now in a conventionally beautiful way. A butterfly.
He was so happy that not only did it come back, his metaphorical angel became a lateral one to him. He placed the butterfly with some daffodils he intended for it. With new legs and heavy wings it walked on the Gwyndolin’s hand which it considered its own haven. It was the best day of Gwyndolin’s life.
But even this wouldn't last. One day it wanted to go outside. Gwyndolin still kept it in his room. Only his sister could explain some things that belonged with nature. Deciding to return the creature back home he said his goodbyes. Fluttering in the sunny sky it once admired with Gwyndolin it became a memory.
That evening Gwyndolin looked upon a dark landscape illuminated by a glorious moon. Getting lost in it’s beauty he almost didn’t notice a tingle on this head. It was a familiar butterfly in the moonlight.
