who has two thumbs, just rewatched chap 2 for the first time since it came out and 1. absolutely hates how mike’s character was treated but 2. loves the losers with all of their heart.... me it’s me

         jessica hanlon was afro-latina. even though mike didn’t grow up in a spanish-speaking household ( will’s side of the family moved out to derry with them, while jessica’s dominican family stayed in florida; she had a rocky relationship with them up to her death ), it was important to jessica that mike learn spanish. will’s family didn’t really see the point, because maine is such a white folk’s state, but will himself encouraged it and tried to learn alongside his son.

         after she died, mike’s education of the language suffered with no one to teach it to him. in mike’s teenage years, he decided to take matters into his own hands, and he basically lived at the library until he was fluent. it’s the reason he became so familiar with the derry town library, and why he grew to be so fond of it.

( he knows very well that he has no one to speak spanish to in derry, me. but when he strums his guitar and sings an old song in his mother’s language, he feels like she’s close by. )

ok something cute to get me thru the Suffering that was the end of that book:

mike gives the losers eskimo kisses. his mom used to give them to him all the time when he was scared or on the edge of a meltdown. it grounded him and always made him giggle, and everything seemed better afterwards.

mike noticing one of his friends is upset and taking them by the neck and leaning their foreheads together so he can rub his nose against theirs. mike unreservedly continuing to do this while the other is like “what the fuck” until they relax into the motion and eventually start laughing at the absurdity of it while also feeling better than they felt before.

does anyone else think about how mike covered eddie with his body and totally expected to die for him because i think about that shit Every Damn Day

i need to write a whole post about this, but mike is great with kids. he was great with kids as a kid. every kid who comes to the library knows mr. hanlon and they always ask him for reading recommendations and what mysteries he’s solving next. 

he’s ended more than one relationship over the fact that he’s so wonderful with kids, but is adamant about not having any of his own. hard to explain that the reason you don’t want kids is because you have dreams about them getting eaten alive.
