Jatherid is so real and serious to me actually. Like, the way that it's within Jack's group that Davey and Katherine are able to find community and express themselves authentically for the first time!! And the way that the two of them, in turn, spend the entirety of act two refusing to let Jack isolate himself from the people that care for and support him!! The fact that the ones arguing in favor of him staying at the end are Katherine and Davey!! The way that they as duos function so effectively and so fondly (KoNY Dave and Kath...)!! The way they all make mistakes in relation to each other but they don't let it break them!! Like!!! Hello!!!!

Rewatching livesies with my sister and having many thoughts, but really noticing how good Ben Fankauser’s accent work is. Like he really does strike the perfect middle ground between Katherine and Jack. He’s got the standard english grammar but his pronunciation and annunciation is still VERY recognizable as newsie-adjacent especially on his vowels (the way he says union before The World Will Know and goons in Watch What Happens are great examples). It’s one of those nice little character things that could have easily and understandably been handled differently but the way is WAS handled adds so much richness both to his character and to the actual sound of the show

Thinking very specifically about how Davey goes from “I say we save any exclusive for a real reporter” to “a regular beat for the star reporter.” Like, obviously his initial dismissal of Katherine is rooted in misogyny just like Jack’s is but, but I think to some extent he probably also subconsciously feels like his place in the group is threatened (the look on his face when she’s introduced is WILD he seems terrified) and so responds to her from a place of insecurity, which is why I love his redirect in KoNY so much I think.

Like, here’s a song where everyone is singing about what they personally want, and Davey uses his line to instead express appreciation for Katherine and redirect the conversation in such a way that the rest of the Newsies follow suit. It’s a really nice bit of character growth, while also demonstrating Davey’s effectiveness as a speaker and organizer.

I also really like it in conjunction with Katherine’s earlier “you got yourselves in the papes.” She’s clearly aware of how much being in the paper matters to them, and understands that taking the opportunity to make it all about her might not be the right move in this situation, especially since in the scene she’s explicitly trying to cheer them all up. It’s both very sweet of her, and very socially-aware, which I love.

And the fact that Davey picks up that dropped thread later? To make sure Katherine still gets her flowers? And she only validates it (“whod’a thunk I’m the king of new york!”) once it’s clear that everyone is feeling better AND the sentiment is reinforced by another newsie? (also the fact that her line isn’t her normal proper english and instead an approximation of the newsie dialect/speech patterns? Love it! She’s becoming part of the group!) It’s all so good!!! To me!!!!!

Besides, when she thinks about Jack, or talks about him, she often calls him their lover, which is a term that fits aptly, she thinks. Jack, more than being her lover, is a lover in general.

So much softer than any other man she’s met - he looks at everything like he’s waiting to fall in love with it. Sometimes she catches him drawing her, or Davey, or the both of them, almost like he doesn’t even realize he’s doing it, like loving them is writ down to his marrow.
