“I’m fine.” The answer came too fast, but it was too late now. Terra could not take it back and try again with a more convincing reply. She sighed and sat down next to Juliet, cradling a few blankets and water bottles on her lap. “I’m tired,” she added, hoping that a little bit of truth would make the lie convincing. Everyone was tired anyway. “You? How are you, Juliet?” They had trekked through the forest the last three days and spent the weeks before that cooped up in a church. Their city was gone. I’m fine wouldn’t cut it. “We found quite the place, huh?”
Tumblr media
Terra responded so quickly, Juliet could tell it was a lie, and she let out a soft sigh, how long was it going to take Terra to realise that a simple I’m fine wasn’t good enough when it came to the pair of them interacting, Terra often pushed Juliet for the truth, and still she hid it from the blonde. “Tired I think is an understatement...” She muttered, looking at her friend closely, wanting to get a real answer but not wanting to pry. “I’m fine, I guess, I’m tired, and I miss home, I miss the old base.” Juliet didn’t know when she’d started seeing Fall City as her home, but now it was gone she knew it was her home, another place sh could never return to. “We did, but we need defenses,” a pause, a side glance at her friend, “are you sure you’re okay, Terra?”

The news had spread relatively quickly after the gunshot, someone from the survivors had been bitten, someone was turning and had been bought back to the hospital because they were rumoured to have had a cure. A cure for the infection.
Usually she wouldn't have gone out of her way to find out who it was, but after everything they'd all gone through together, she figured there was no harm in finding out.
Oh how wrong she had been.
She followed the small crowd for a while, eventually starting to push ahead of most, only to see Charlotte - the scientist who she'd met in the rain at the start of Fall City - lying in a bed, restrained, her face blown off, causing the blonde to look away in disgust.
Juliet didn't hang around long enough to see anything else happen, the sight of a friend in that state something she wanted to be rid of as quickly as possible, the mere thought of it making her feel sick to her stomach. How had this happened?
She knew there was always the possibility of someone from the camp getting bitten, turning, shot down, but never for one moment had she considered it would be Charlotte, she who took so much care in what she was doing, a scientist who was smarter than so many others, taken down by one of the creatures that roamed the earth among them, making their lives hell.
Reentering the main room, she avoided making eye contact with anyone else who stayed there while the events had unfolded downstairs, unsure whether she would be able to hold a proper conversation, whether she would be able to feign interest and avoid the topic of conversation.
She didn’t want to talk about her friends gruesome ending, how the room had looked coated in the black gloop that had splattered the wall behind where Charlotte had lain, her life extinguished by gunshot. She didn’t want to think about how her last moments would have been, the fever that took over her body, the rumoured cure that was probably a lie to give them all hope, how there was no way to save the brunette who cared about saving the unsavable. And she definitely didn’t want to talk about the lack of face her friend had, and the way Lori tried to fix her back together, though it was pointless. She just didn’t want to talk.
A glare thrown at anyone who looked her way was enough to stop them from trying, leaving Juliet to sit and consider everything. Consider how they were going to survive this, sat in an abandoned hospital with no real defenses, no way to protect themselves. They had to do something, so Charlotte hadn’t died for nothing, she had to find a way to get others to protect themselves, to protect each other. Sitting and waiting for death wasn’t good enough, they had to try.

"do i look like a foot rest to you"
A slender brunette brow arched, dark eyes sliding over the blonde before a grin pressed at Cristine’s lips and she wiggled her feet a little more deliberately in order to be a shit. Easing back into her seat to relax more as she didn’t even bother moving her feet off of Juliet. The brunette held the others gaze for a good while before tilting her head a bit, as if daring Juliet to do something about their current situation.
“Yeah, you do– gotta problem with it blondie?”
Cristine finally spoke, not even bothering to hide the small chuckle that escaped past her lips. Another moment passed and Cris moved her right foot, using it to prod at Juliet’s side lightly before she nodded in the others direction and huffed a breath.
“Do something ‘bout it. I dare ya.”

cuddly / platonic-ish memes
“your feet are cold.”
“movies are made for watching, not for asking questions.”
“you’re hogging the blankets!”
“we should cuddle… for warmth.”
“is that your hand on my leg?”
“scoot over.”
“can we watch something else? this is scary.”
“are you shivering?”
“if you start snoring, i won’t be responsible for what happens to you.”
“did you eat all the popcorn?”
“your hair keeps getting in my face.”
“are you even wearing pants??”
“stop kicking me!”
“you’re a good pillow.”
“do i look like a foot-rest to you?”
“do i look like a pillow to you?”
“i’m cold.”
“why can’t you ever just lay still?”

Juliet looked up at the voice of her friend, a smile settling onto her lips at the sight of her distributing blankets and water. Of course Terra was walking around helping everyone else, sparing no thought for herself. That was something Juliet respected, and it was one of the reasons she loved Terra, the brunette was always pushing herself to be there for others, even through the simple act of distributing water. “Hey, thank you.” She murmured, her mind elsewhere, though she forced herself to pay attention to her friend. “How are you, Terra?”

Even there were no fences to fix or perimeter to walk, there was still a lot to do. They needed supplies. They needed food. They needed to figure out how to live in this new environment. They had to enforce order, a new set of rules that would help them with life at the hospital – if they were to stay here. Terra thought it would be pointless to look for something better. There was nothing better. Fall City lay in ashes. They could look on it from the third-floor balcony. At least it was a reminder. It reminded Terra to work every time she walked by. Today she was distributing water and blankets to the survivors.
“Hey,” Terra said when she came up to Juliet. “For you.”

Gwen nodded, knowing full well that several of the people within these walls were better left managing the camp than stalking prey with great stealth out in the wild. “I’ll probably take Isaac with me on the next hunt,” she mused lowly, more speaking to herself than the woman nearby. The woman’s comment on whatever benefits might be received from embracing a situation one did not choose rang truer than she was probably aware. “That’s a very positive thing to say. Not used to hearing stuff like that anymore.”
Tumblr media
Juliet nodded absentmindedly at the idea of taking Isaac out, knowing that the words weren’t really aimed at her, but more at the woman speaking, and also knowing that he would probably be one of the best to go out, considering how loud the rest seemed to be. Though she paid more attention as she was addressed once more. “Yeah, I’m usually more pessimistic, but after all this shit with them bombing us, I figured we all need someone to try and be optimistic...”

Tobias wasn’t even paying enough attention to Juliet herself to care that she hadn’t fully put away her weapon, still held an air of caution about her despite the fact that they were friendly faces. It didn’t matter in the long run to him simply because nothing mattered right now other than finding Rebecca…and the falling of her face didn’t help him feel any better overall.
She wasn’t here.
Rebecca wasn’t here.
A hand rifled through his hair, musing the blonde strands aggressively. He had thought maybe they’d gotten lucky, finding another group. Odds were already so low as it was, if they could find another group it meant he could find Rebecca. But today, unfortunately, wasn’t that lucky day.
He forced composure, simply giving a nod to her words, a shrug of one shoulder. “It’s….not your fault,” he pointed out a little lamely, releasing a slow, calming breath. He would just have to keep looking…keep looking…keep looking until he found her.
Tumblr media
Though the male hid it well, Juliet could see that her words were not the ones he wanted to hear, and she looked towards the ground, as if to hide her face, almost ashamed that she couldn’t lift his spirits.
“Look, come back to where we are, with whoever you have with us, and we can all look for her, the more of us there are, the more ground we can cover, right?” Her words were chosen carefully, hiding the fact that she wasn’t all that hopeful about finding anyone else, it was all mere chance that they themselves had been able to interact. “She’s gotta be out there, right? You just gotta have faith.” It was almost wring, Juliet telling the other to have faith when she herself had none.

She wasn’t Owen, or any other face that crept into the darkest of slumbers, but she was better than no one. A sight for sore eyes. It was in Lori’s nature to be handsy and affectionate. It had her stroking her thumb against Juliet’s shoulder. but she still wasn’t genuinely smiling. I’m fine. She’d heard the phrase so much over the last six months that it was an automatic marker, the telltale sign of things being everything but fine. She’d followed her comment up with a little more honesty, and Lori found herself nodding. ‘Stress’ and ‘fine’ were understatements. “Stressed is one word.” She was glancing down at her feet, sneakers coated in dirt and broken branches. “I’m a mess, but what’s new?” A giggle filled with self deprecation. “Are you hurt? I…” Lori held up her cast as evidence, spun around to show her the latest bite mark on her shoulder blade. “Everything is a mess.”
Tumblr media
Though it was unexpected, the touch of the other, the gentle hand upon her shoulder, it certainly wasn’t unwanted. She and the other blonde had seemed to understand each other more after that day in the clinic, arguing over who was more guilty for the injury that had befallen their mutual friend, Lori telling her not to be stupid, Juliet not listening in the slightest. Lori’s words had Juliet focusing on her once more. Self depreciation was a common trait it seemed. “No, I mean I think I may have sprained my ankle or something, but not quite as injured as you.” The final part of her sentence was spoken quieter after noticing the bite on Lori’s shoulder. She knew the other was immune, or heard rumours of it, but the sight of teethmarks still put her on edge slightly. “When isn’t everything a mess?”

Memories That Fade Like A Photograph // Juliet&Cris
( @crisroe )
For over a week that small piece of paper had weighed heavily in her pocket, in her mind. It was crinkled, slightly torn at one side, a bit singed from the flames that licked at Fall City too, but the depiction on the small square was one that both warmed her heard and made her blood run cold. Cristine and a young boy, probably her son by the way she looked at him.
Juliet had kept the photo safe somehow, intending on returning it to its rightful owner, the image depicting happier, better times. And while it had no sentimental meaning to the blonde, her mission of returning the photo being a reason to keep going through the never ending forests, ignore the butting of heads that had inevitably come to pass.
And now, seeing everyone who had survived all crammed into one part of an old abandoned hospital, Juliet had let out a sigh of relief. Things were different, but some things stayed the same, something she realised as she spotted Cris chatting with someone, talking animatedly, and she moved closer. “Cris… I think I have something of yours.”

Well, aside from her leg - she was fine. Nothing but burning lungs and a shattered mind. It was something she could numb over time. But for now – “No, I’m alright.” She glanced towards her, trying to see if there were any injuries on her person. “And you?”
Tumblr media
Juliet wasn’t sure if she believed Charlotte’s words of being fine, but she herself knew how irksome it could be to be pestered when you wanted to be left alone. “Okay...” She muttered, mainly to herself, before she caught the question aimed her way. “What, no, I’m fine. It’s nothing I can’t handle.”

Gwen didn’t recognize her fellow blonde as the woman approached which immediately placed her on the defensive, gaze already observing the other’s demeanor. “We have some back at camp,” she replied. “And I’m a pretty decent hunter if we want something not prepackaged.” Granted she only had extensive experience with feeding herself, but perhaps with a little assistance in trapping she could make due for a larger group. “It was more rhetorical anyway since I don’t think you all have much of a choice.”
Tumblr media
Juliet nodded slightly as she was assured there was more food, because she knew if the other group had nothing to offer they would starve quickly, the amount of food being cooked for them all. “Well I’m sure someone around here can probably help you catch stuff, though I wouldn’t suggest some of these guys, they’re pretty shit at being quiet.” She responded, the idea of something that wasn’t canned immediately sticking in her mind, the mere thought of it enough to make her mouth water ever so slightly. “Sometimes having no choice isn’t exactly a bad thing, sometimes it means you get the best results...”

“Yeah, that’s not–,” she started, shaking her head. “I’m a lot of things, but not OCD. Not to the point of stabbing, anyway. I thought you were– Nevermind.” It couldn’t get through Dylan’s head why someone would make sounds, apparently willingly, in a situation where this is the last thing you would want to do. With predators who are attracted by such actions. “Well,” Dylan made a face, “if you’re not too bothered with them Frankenstein wannabes coming at you for it, snap snap away.”
Tumblr media
“But I am, so…” Dylan turned half-way to leave, when her conscience got the best of her. She stopped and turned back around just slightly, only enough to catch sight of the woman again.
She bit her lip. “I should ask. Were you from Fall City?”
Though she was entirely unamused by the whole situation, and her eyes were still fixed on the blade that hovered in the air, but away from her flesh, Juliet had to admit that the stranger was rather attractive, no matter how she wanted to ignore that fact. “They can come at me, I want to kill something anyway, so why not start with a fungus covered freak?“ She questioned, thought it was more of a rhetorical question.
The stranger began to walk away and Juliet rolled her eyes, some people were so touchy over some things. Though when the other turned back to face her, asking about where she was from she nodded slowly. “I was, the people I’m with were too, if that helps you with whatever.”
