it's more with direct interaction but that isn't really a binary thing; someone who regularly chats in someone's chat could be anywhere on a scale of 'casual viewer' to 'friend' . i think in mcsr we get somewhat attached to the little cat people living in our computers who chat every day and say hi and gl etc., so it would probably hurt to learn that those people are causing a problem for me or a friend. but if you just lurk and rarely ever interact then it's not as big of a deal

for me it's the just the second one; if you are not hurting anyone then i encourage you to do whatever makes you happy, and i don't mind if people ship me as long as it's not directly in front of me and the other people you are shipping also don't mind. some people might feel slightly differently; for example knowing that someone thinks of you in a certain way could change the context of your interactions with that person, and maybe you don't want to interact with them at all. but for me personally it doesn't change anything to know that someone likes to ship me, unless they are hurting someone else in the process.

i know that nobody was trying to make anyone upset or uncomfortable, but if you are in shipping spaces etc. the best thing you can do is to just ask the person what they are and aren't ok with. it would be great if everyone were able to clearly communicate boundaries with in advance, but not everyone is that aware of that sort of thing or haven't really put much thought into boundaries, or struggle to find the exact words, or don't want to draw attention to it. so the best way to avoid people getting hurt (both you and the person the content is about) is to just ask them about it if they haven't made it clear yet

this last one isn't actually a real question i was asked, but it is a perspective i've seen floating around before in various communities, so i sent this one to myself in case there is anyone who might benefit from having this cleared up, because a lot of people struggle to accept social rules or norms when they don't quite understand the reasons for them. i often find it hard to understand things like that, so maybe this could help someone:

i think that this way of thinking comes from the misconception that 'shipping or nsfw content about a person could only cause them discomfort in the same way that looking at any nsfw content that they're not into could make them uncomfortable'. for me personally, that is the only type of discomfort it brings me- which is why i'm ok with it as long it's not in my face. however, for some people, this is not the only type of discomfort it can cause. knowing that someone thinks of you in that sort of way can feed into insecurities about your appearance, personality, how you present yourself, how people perceive you, etc. . especially if that content is invalidating to your identity in some way, or presents you in a way that you really don't want to be viewed. if those people are people you know or talk to, it can also change the way in which you view all of your past and future interactions with that person. perhaps it would make you not want to interact with that person any more, and that's ok. but it hurts both people when that happens, especially if they have to see each other around all the time in the wider community. which is why it's a bad idea to set that landmine in place by ignoring boundaries of someone who you are regularly coexisting in any spaces with. and again, if you don't know what those boundaries are, you can always just ask them.
