Being a new parent is difficult. Being a new parent to de-aged soldiers with knowledge of the future, a general mistrust of everyone, and a habit of keeping secrets, all in the middle of a tense situation between historic enemies...well, that is slightly more difficult.

This comment reminded me of the above lines–which are literally like two minutes apart.  One of the things that’s really well done about Anakin’s story that I think often gets passed off as “bad writing” is that Anakin is all over the place. He doesn’t have a strong stance about how he wants to be loyal to the Republic, he wants to blame the Jedi, he wants to do this for Padme, he loves her, he chokes her, he wants to create an Empire, he wants to follow Palpatine, he wants to overthrow Palpatine, he wants to follow Palpatine again, etc. And I think THAT’S THE POINT.  This is like how Hayden’s voice is not strong and clear and projecting well in his portrayal of Anakin because that, too, IS THE POINT.  This is someone brittle and fragile and unstable, who is coming unhinged and you’re supposed to feel awkward and uncomfortable around him. When you listen to him, it’s not a FUCK YEAH villain moment, but the tragedy of someone crumbling into this horrible, awful tragedy. This is someone who does not really believe what he’s saying, but he’s literally quoting Palpatine’s lies (“He’ll betray you just as he’s betrayed me.” / “You were right.  The Jedi betrayed both of us.” - “The Sith are not afraid of the Dark Side of the Force.” / “I do not fear the Dark Side as you do.” - “Good is a point of view, Anakin. […] yet they are considered by the Jedi to be –” “Evil.” / “From my point of view, the Jedi are evil.”).  This is someone who does not really believe in doing this for the Republic, but in a justification for the horrible things he’s done. That’s why he goes from “I have brought peace to the Republic” to “I have brought peace, freedom, justice, and security to my new Empire” in the span of like two minutes, because it doesn’t really matter what he’s grasping for, just that he’s reaching for something, anything to justify the horrors he’s done, the children he’s murdered, the innocents he’s attacked, the loved ones he’s betrayed. I think that lack of core central beliefs often gets written off as Anakin not being a clearly written character, when I think the truth is that he’s not supposed to have a clear, solid point of view.  That, instead, we’re watching someone who is falling apart, who is scrambling to justify his horrible actions, who is coming unhinged in a really ugly, awful way and that is the point.  Having him be coherent about his motivations would have taken away the heart of what was so awful and painful about his fall, what was so heartbreaking and tragic about his fall.

I love Anakin as a character but I think Star Wars as a whole needs to be less forgiving of him and his actions and I think Rex is the perfect character to explore this idea.
Rex wants to save his brothers more than anything and we know that he fails and never recovers from the trauma. It was an impossible task but he fought so hard for it. The clones don’t become a thriving community after the Empire falls. Few live to remember their sacrifice or that they were even there to begin with. They’re wiped off the map and that’s it and Rex just has the live with it.
Imagine realistically how you would feel if you were him and you learned that a huge reason why the Empire was even allowed to rise in the first place is because of the man who you trusted, who was one of your closest friends for three years, who convinced you that he thought of you as a person unlike the rest of the galaxy. I wouldn’t ever be able to look past it, and I don’t think Rex would or should either.
Obi Wan considers Anakin metaphorically dead because it’s the only way to cope with the grief.
Ahsoka has a more complicated view of him because of the distance leaving the Jedi order put between them.
Luke is able to forgive him in the only way that is narratively compelling, because he sees him as his father and not as the monster everyone else does.
Leia never forgives him (nor should she) but grows to understand him more over time.
Padme uses her dying breath to vouch for him even if he doesn’t deserve it.
If Rex didn’t forgive Anakin, it would offer yet another perspective. He is someone who loved Anakin, but Anakin is a huge reason why his brothers are dead. Anakin is the one who used his brothers as the tools they had always been told they were to march on the Jedi temple and murder the Jedi, the only allies the Clones ever truly had. Everything that happens during the reign of the Empire, including whatever goes down in the Bad Batch finale, is part of a huge domino effect because of Anakin’s choices. It would be tragic to see their friendship end this way, but Rex’s entire life is rife with tragedy. Ahsoka is the only positive result of his friendship with Anakin left. They only have each other.
I want Rex to be angry at him. Anakin’s actions are abhorrent and to downplay them only does Anakin a disservice as a character and denies his agency. Yes, he’s a victim of Palpatine’s grooming. He is also the perpetrator of a literal reign of terror and there are few groups of people who are bigger victims of the Empire he helped create than the clones.

Plo: whoops, how clumsy of me I have dropped some inappropriate (wink) literature in the workplace, but zounds! I am needed in the next room. I hope no one accidentally picks it up and reads it! (Hurries off leaving suspicious pamphlet on the ground)
Fox: is your General trying to sneak you porn? (Takes nonplussed sip of caf)
Wolffe: no he's trying to get us to unionize.
Fox: (spits out caf)

I think it would be really funny to do an abridged version of my longer stories. Wanna understand the plot but don't wanna read star wars les miserables? Try the abridged version of Three Jedi! Want to experience the story as originally intended as well as all the author's mental breakdowns along the way? Well buckle up, friend, it's four times longer than the abridged version.

Cody: Well you’ve lived a good life.
Rex: I’m ten!

clone wars constantly yo-yos between “no matter how fair the government claims it is, it will always become corrupt by corporate greed” to “check out this cool spaceship” to  “companies are willing to sell potentially dangerous resources to a desperate population if it means more profit” to “this space wizard just threw a rock with their mind and cut it in half with a laser sword how sick is that"  and I think that’s wonderful

I do legitimately believe that Qui-Gon's freeing of Shmi (Legends continuity) would have been written into the accounting/finances as compensation for her aid in getting them off Tatooine. It wasn't favoritism or unapproved-by-the-Senate spending on the slave trade, but payment for her own family's help.
Naboo needed a hyperdrive. That hyperdrive was purchased (well, gamble-exchanged as a collateral thing, it's complicated) with Anakin's winnings from the race, and since Anakin's a minor, that money is also his mother's... which means that, through transitive properties, she purchased it for Naboo in the course of an unofficial Jedi mission. We know as fact that Anakin's winnings would have been enough to purchase freedom for both Skywalkers. "Loaning" those winnings to the Jedi and Naboo is why Shmi remained in chains.
So the Jedi owe her, in such a way that when time comes for a yearly audit by the Senate, purchasing her freedom post-incident is written in as fulfillment of a debt incurred in service to a Republic monarch.
