Modern designers must be aware of economic, cultural, and technological shifts, and emerging trends in different media. One of the biggest cultural shifts is related to the Internet. Designers have to take in account of the younger readers and how they aren't comfortable with reading big chunks of text on a screen. It is important for Graphic Designers to continue learning new skills to remain relevant and desirable in an increasing profession. Adapting in skills like illustration, photography, type design, writing, and collages can make you a well rounded, multitasking designer which allows you to take on more roles.

The choice and use of type can determine if you will catch and maintain the reader’s attention. Readers who are familiar with reading a dense body of text when it comes to a novel, will not be accustomed or read the same page in a magazine. It is because there are other elements involved such as: decoration, variation, space, and cohesive use of design. Choosing a body typeface, readability and usability should be a main consideration because it is a vital role in communicating the editorial message.

When it comes to newspaper and pages in a magazine, you can speed up the production process by creating a flexible template. The elements of a template consist of columns, column gutter, spine gutter, margins, folio line, baseline, and trim area. Body text in columns can either be justified, aligned left with right rags, or aligned right with left rags. It is best to ignore having widows, orphans, and hyphens in a body copy. The overall components of a layout should catch the readers attention and keep them interested.

There are many areas that makes up a successful publication. There is the front of the book, the feature well, and the back of the book. The content page is what the guides the readers through the publication. Content page should be legible, simple to follow, and easy to find. The front section of the magazine is important since it sends strong clues as to the style and tone of the magazine. The feature well is also important in the textual element of a magazine branding.  Everything that is inside the publication is going to determine if it’s going to stand out from its competitors. The back section of the publication is mainly filled up with reviews, listing, and commentary.
