Letterforms in ink using a broken 38mm brass calligraphy nib for my pre-thesis zine project — My work is often parametric. The instructions I gave myself for this exercise: • Draw 20-25 letters per minute. • Don't dip the nib in ink unless it runs out completely. • Choose a different starting point to draw the letterform as often as you can. • Use the wide orientation of the nib, the narrow and the combination of both. • Cover the entire page. Let the available space guide how fat or slender or small or big the letterforms are. What I enjoy about drawing letters this way is that I can rarely ever recreate a letterform. I learnt Devanagari calligraphy in India and Fraktur calligraphy in France. Both times I perfected the letterforms by drawing them over and over again using a grid to maintian proportion. Here, I try to use repetition and lack of grid to create different letterforms each time and let variables like amount of ink, speed at which I draw and intuition drive their own character. Divorced from any particular genre/classification, I draw the letterforms with just their basic skeleton in mind – the way we learnt to write our ABCs in pencils as kids. Anti-perfection: A Rant A pre-thesis project that laid the foundation for my thesis research and experimentation. This zine is an attempt to question and respond to the acute obsession with perfection, order and structure that has been the foundation of my design education and practice. Through the essay, page designs and the format of the zine, I navigate the relationship between structure and meaning while allowing space for chance, serendipity, improvisation, experimentation and intuition. The essay started with a list of words – the cover features words associated with beauty, perfection and order, and the back features words associated with the ugly, imperfect, and the unfit. The page designs are a combination of carefully typeset narrative, gestural compositions created on p5js, and an experiment with ink letterforms. The format of the zine with cuts and folds create a non-linear narrative and chance compositions. Non-linearity is central to my thesis work. Naturally, the book structure was a perfect way to establish that. Here's showing a dummy I created for my thesis book. It's a twist on a classic pamphlet stitch binding that allows for four natural points of beginning. DEETS! I love the lower half of this illustration — the leg shading, the kitty ears and fur, the chair scritch, the shadows — I love it all. Oooh the feet shadows are my favorite! I spent great efforts during my early studies fretting over proportionate human figure drawings, and feeling incompetent for not being able to draw humans well. I always drew them with large heads and tiny feet and wonky perspectives. The whole conversation about owning your style and drawing as you like was nonexistent. I was conditioned to think that if my drawing is not like the fine-artsy guide books, it's bad. Every once in a while, I need a reminder that resting is doing. "You don't need to be busy. You don't need to justify your existence in terms of productivity. Rest is an essential part of survival. An essential part of us. An essential part of being the animals we are. When a dog lies in the sun I imagine it does it without guilt, because as far as I can tell dogs seem more in tune with their own needs. As I grow older, I think that resting might actually be the main point of life. To sit down passively, inside or outside, and merely absorb things — the tick of a clock, a cloud passing by, the distant hum of traffic, a bird signing — can feel like an end in itself. It can actually feel and be more meaningful than a lot of things we are conditioned to see as productive. I think about social media and how that relates to artists/designers and their work now more than ever. Esp in the Instagram Age, I wonder how I define personal success or growth, and it's like treading a tightrope. I don't know what to say that is better than what Elisa Albert writes in her essay 'The Snarling Girl: Notes on—and against—ambition’ - “The work: this is what I would like to talk about. The work, not the hearts and likes and dings and dongs. And maybe I can float the possibility that the work is best when it’s done nowhere near the hearts and likes and dings and dongs. Maybe I can suggest that there is plenty of time for hearts and likes and dings and dongs once the work is done, and done well. Maybe I can ever so gently point out that a lot of people seem rather addicted to the hearts and likes and dings and dongs, and seem to talk about and around writing a hell of a lot more than they actually do it. Maybe we can even talk about how some self-promote so extensively and shamelessly and heedlessly and artlessly that their very names become shorthand for how not to be. I mean: ambition to what? Toward what? For what? In the service of what? Endless schmoozing and worrying and self-promotion and maniac flattery and status anxiety and name-dropping are available to all of us in any artistic medium. But the competitive edge is depressing. That thinly (or not at all) disguised desire to win. To best her or him or her or him, sell more, publish more, own the Internet, occupy more front tables, get tagged, have the most followers, be loudest, assume some throne. Is it because we want to believe that we are in charge of our destiny, and that if “things” aren’t “happening” for us, we are failing to, like, “manifest”? Or is it because we are misguided enough to think that external validation is what counts? If you asked me a few years ago, I'd say do it well. Do one thing only, but do it well. Lately, I am all about just doing it — somehow, anyhow. I've realized that doing something well, making it close to perfect is just a way to set myself up for more procrastination and more excuses disguised as some sort of virtuosity. Just doing the thing and putting it out there offers an iterative approach where I can go back and look at all the ways I can do better. The nagging stress and pressure is off.
