One thing I really love about the Apothecary Diaries is that, despite Maomao being pretty definitively *not like other girls*, she never uses that as an opportunity to look down on other women. For instance, there are quite a few plot lines in the series that involve cosmetics. While Maomao makes it clear that she's not usually interested in makeup, she never disparages the women around her who are. It's just very refreshing to see a narrative with an unconventional female character that doesn't rely on throwing other forms of femininity under the bus to prop her up.
