QT #1: For the Love of God(s)

I’ve been reading the Sandman comic book series lately, and I have been loving it. I haven’t read too much of Gaiman’s work but he has quickly garnered my love and respect after reading American Gods, Neverwhere and now what I’ve read of Sandman. And the thing that has especially impressed me was his use of gods, mythologies, and the like, within both American gods and most impressively Sandman. I have always been fascinated by mythology, whether Norse, Greek, Biblical or whatever it may be, it all peaks my interest and the way Gaiman integrates multiple mythologies is a real treat for me. The funny thing about it though is what I favor most is his integration of biblical mythology. It’s only funny to me because I have shied away from religion but biblical stories and mythology remain some of my favorites. Maybe it’s their simplicity in comparison to the hectic and wild Greek, Norse, and Slovak myths. Albeit biblical mythology has the one benefit over all other mythos, by being the only one compiled into one massive tome. Either way the biblical characters and story threads have been some of my favorites in Sandman thus far, with the odd immortal existence of Abel and Cain (and the fact that Cain seem to be the favored of the two through out the comics so far), the reference to god, the Creator and his mysterious all powerful role in the world (though being called the “Creator” certainly cast some obvious hints), and the roles of his Angels. The devil though, Lucifer, really takes the spot of my favorite character in the ever growing cast in Sandman. I mean when he is first introduced, he is shown to amazingly look like young David Bowie!
Aside from looking like a musical legend though Lucifer has been given a far deeper personality then just ruler of hell and lord of evil. From where I am at in the story not much is known about Lucifer’s past, except of course with what basics are already known from his fall from grace in the bible. Either way he is a super interesting and well I always had a weird thing for the devil, so I can’t wait to dig into the Lucifer side series after I finish Sandman. My hope is to finally dive into mythologies more deeply and learn all the stories, all the gods, all the demons, monsters and fabled creatures and integrate into a something at least half as amazingly as Gaiman has. For now I continue to enjoy reading the adventures of the Dream of the Endless.
