All You Need to Know About Laparoscopy for Infertility
Take Away
Women who are unable to have children often undergo a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopy is performed as a diagnostic as well as a treatment procedure. It gets its name from the dynamic tool used in the procedure called a laparoscope. The laparoscope is a special thin tube-like flexible device with a high-resolution camera and high-beam light attached at one end that allows the doctor to have a view of all the abdominal organs.
Laparoscopy for infertility is used to diagnose and treat a variety of “pelvic fertility factors” such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and many more. The biggest advantage of this procedure is that it involves minor cuts through which the laparoscope and necessary instruments are inserted to perform the required procedures.
Through this article, let’s understand how the procedure of laparoscopy works in infertility treatment and Why laparoscopy is done for infertility.
Table of Contents
Feel free to skip ahead if one topic catches your eye:
What is laparoscopy for infertility?
Why is laparoscopy performed?
The procedure of diagnostic laparoscopy for infertility
Recovery post-laparoscopy
Benefits of laparoscopy
Risks associated with laparoscopy
Assisted reproduction and laparoscopy for infertility
Take Away
1. What is laparoscopy for infertility?
Laparoscopy for infertility is the laparoscopic procedure performed to detect and treat the conditions causing infertility. It is performed with the help of a laparoscope (the camera and light-aided tool) that guide the doctor by providing real-time images that are reflected on the monitor screen. These images help analyze the internal pelvic infertility condition. The various methods and techniques of laparoscopy are:
Laparoscopy performed to diagnose or find the exact cause of infertility is termed diagnostic laparoscopy.
The laparoscopic procedure used to treat infertility is known as operational laparoscopy.
Advanced laparoscopic techniques use a 3-D camera for a 3-dimensional view.
Robotic laparoscopy applies for robotic assistance during the laparoscopic procedure.
2.Why is laparoscopy performed?
Laparoscopy is generally performed to assess the internal abdominal and/or pelvic organs. The female fertility conditions that can be detected and treated through laparoscopic surgery are:
Anomalies within the uterus: Uterus is where the embryo gets implanted. The presence of uterine fibroids and structural deformities of the uterus does not allow women to conceive. Laparoscopy is used to assess and correct these conditions of the uterus.
Blockages of the fallopian tubes: The fallopian tubes enable the movement of gametes and fertilization to take place. Blockages of these tubules are removed to considerably improve the fertilization chances.
Hydrosalpinx: Hydrosalpinx is the condition where an unusual fluid gets collected within the fallopian tube and can damage it. In such cases, the tubes are clipped off using the laparoscopy technique.
Conditions of the ovaries: Large and stubborn ovarian cysts are detected and treated by laparoscopic technique.
Endometriosis and pelvic adhesion: In women with endometriosis, the endometrium grows out of the uterus. This causes the pelvic organs and tissues to stick with each other. Endometriosis is treated and adhesions are released through laparoscopic surgery.
Removal of scar tissues: Infections or a previous surgery can leave scar tissues formations within the reproductive tract that can obstruct fertility. These scar tissues can be detected accurately and be removed through laparoscopy.
3. The procedure of diagnostic laparoscopy for infertility
Laparoscopy involves 2-3 small cuts made below the navel that allow insertion of the laparoscope and essential instruments to carry out the diagnostic or operational procedures. The incisions made are between 0.5 to 1 cm wide and so laparoscopy is also called ‘Keyhole Surgery’. Laparoscopy begins with initial tests and investigations after which the surgery is performed.
The diagnostic laparoscopy for infertility procedure involves the following steps:
General anesthesia is administered so that pain and discomfort are not experienced during laparoscopy.
Small incisions are made in the lower abdominal region.
A tube with carbon dioxide gas is let in through one of the insertions to allow inflation of the pelvic cavity for clear visualization.
The Laparoscope is inserted with the help of a flexible tube or cannula which facilitates movement of the camera-aided device to move through the intricate areas of the pelvic organs.
The images acquired through the laparoscope can help diagnose the underlying cause of the condition.
After the required diagnosis is done, the laparoscope and other instruments are removed.
The carbon dioxide gas is allowed to escape from the abdomen. After which keyhole cuts are closed and dressed appropriately.
For laparoscopic biopsy, a sample of tissue is taken out for evaluation. In operational laparoscopy, additional surgical instruments are inserted through the incisions that treat, correct, or repair the underlying cause of infertility.
4. Recovery post-laparoscopy:
The road to recovery post laparoscopy is quick due to the smaller cuts made during the surgical procedure. After the laparoscopic procedure is performed, a few hours of observation is expected. Once the anesthesia effect is reduced and all the medical parameters are normal, the patient will be discharged probably after a half a day stay at the hospital.
At home, the patient will be advised to rest for a couple of weeks for complete healing of the incision region and internal condition.
5. Benefits of laparoscopy
Diagnostic laparoscopy and operational laparoscopy are safe and effective surgical procedures. Laparoscopy allows a clear view of the pelvic cavity. Some of the other benefits of laparoscopy are:
Time taken for diagnostic laparoscopy is around 30-40 minutes and increases accordingly for operational laparoscopy.
Laparoscopy requires small incisions, less bleeding, and fewer infection probabilities.
Laparoscopy benefits a speedy recovery post-surgery.
The small cuts made take less time to heal with reduced pain and internal scarring.
6. Risks associated with laparoscopy
Minimum risks are associated with this surgical technique. However, some of the rare side-effects one may experience from a laparoscopy procedure include:
Pain or discomfort in the pelvic region
Very rarely bleeding at the incision site
Swelling or redness near the incision
Clotting of blood
Breathing difficulties and cough
Complications or reactions due to anesthesia administration
The above risks and side-effects are very rare and can subside a few days after surgery. If the side-effects seem severe and persistent, avail medical assistance immediately.
7. Assisted reproduction and laparoscopy for infertility
Having understood the benefits of laparoscopy, it is important to know that laparoscopic surgery for infertility can treat minor and severe infertility issues. It is also proven that operational laparoscopy performed before an IUI has helped many conceive. Similarly, IVF considered after laparoscopic surgery has given better outcomes and has had successful IVF pregnancy results.
The assisted reproduction techniques (ART) are a miraculous boon to childless couples but an added laparoscopic treatment to the advanced ART procedures can increase pregnancy success by 20 to 25% and provide fruitful pregnancy outcomes.
Laparoscopy is not any major surgical procedure. The beauty of laparoscopy is that it is a diagnostic and treatment procedure. Even advanced techniques and instruments can be used in laparoscopy for more accuracy and precision. This technique of fertility treatment is minimally invasive with minor incisions and quick recovery post- surgery.
We, at IVF Junction through our fertility centers, provide you all forms of fertility treatment. IVF Process in Hindi |

Embryo Freezing Cost in India: An Overview
Assisted Reproduction Techniques (ART) have always amused and enhanced the expectations of millions of couples struggling to have children. One such advanced ART technique is Embryo freezing, where the embryos are stored in a frozen state. It was in the year 1980 when the first successful pregnancy was accomplished through frozen embryo transfer (FET) after which many couples have accomplished their dream of parenthood through FET.
While the cost of embryo freezing differs in various aspects, it is important to note here that the embryo freezing cost in India is mentioned as a procedure cost and in addition, the cost for preserving is calculated on a yearly or half-yearly basis.
In a normal IVF cycle, the ovaries of a woman are stimulated for the retrieval of eggs that are fused with sperm to produce embryos. These embryos can be transferred fresh into the women’s uterus and/or can be frozen for future use. Embryo freezing works on the principle called cryopreservation that utilizes the ability of live cells, tissues, etc to freeze at sub-zero temperature and store for a long duration.

Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) Agonists and Antagonists
Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) Agonists and Antagonists block the production of estrogen. Estrogen stimulates the ovaries and is responsible for the development of female sexual characteristics. Blocking estrogen prevents menstruation and creates artificial menopause. These symptoms can be prevented or reduced by taking small amounts of estrogen and progesterone as per the advice of your gynecologist.
Surgical Approach
If medications are not effective for your endometriosis, your doctor may recommend you to go for surgery.
Laparoscopy is a procedure that is done to remove or destroy the endometrial tissue. In this procedure, a small incision is made and surgical tools along with a camera are inserted. The displaced endometrial tissue is seen and can be removed or destroyed during this procedure.
Hysterectomy is another surgery that can be advised for endometriosis that is not getting better with medications. In this surgery, the uterus and the cervix are removed. Types of Fibroids and Fibroids and Infertility
Fibroids can be of the following types depending on their location –
Intramural Fibroids – These fibroids grow in the muscular wall of the uterus and are the most common type of Fibroids. If they grow larger they can stretch the uterus.
Subserosal Fibroids – These fibroids grow on the outside of the uterus or on the “Serosa”. If these fibroids grow large in size they can make the appearance of the uterus larger on one side.
Pedunculated fibroids – Subserosal fibroids that have a “stem”, a slender base that supports it is called pedunculated fibroids.
Submucosal Fibroids – These fibroids are uncommon when compared to other fibroids and develop in the muscular middle layer of the uterus called the myometrium.
Fibroids usually do not cause infertility, but fibroids and infertility might be possible depending upon where the fibroid is located, for example, fibroids can block fallopian tubes making it difficult to conceive. It is important to get gynecological treatment if you want to know how to shrink fibroids fast.
Who can develop Fibroids?
The cause of fibroids is unknown but some factors can be responsible for their formation.
Hormonal Issues – Estrogen and progesterone are responsible for the formation of the uterine lining and may contribute to the formation of fibroids.
Family History – If you have a family history of fibroids, you might develop fibroids too.
Pregnancy – The hormones estrogen and progesterone are elevated during pregnancy and that may trigger the formation of fibroids.
Age 30 or older – Women over the age of 30 have an increased risk for the formation of fibroids.
African-American – It is observed that African-American women have more fibroids formation.
Weight – It is seen that women had higher body weight have an increased risk of fibroids formation.
Symptoms of Fibroids
The symptoms of fibroids include –
Heavy menstrual bleeding with blood clots
Pelvic and lower back pain
Increased menstrual cramps
Increased urination
Pain during intercourse
Pressure and fullness in the lower abdomen
Swelling and enlargement of the abdomen
These symptoms of fibroids are unpleasant and you would want to know how to shrink fibroids fast. It is important that you consult with your gynecologist and start your fibroids treatment.
Diagnosing Fibroids
If you think you might have uterine fibroids, it is important that you consult your gynecologist. Your gynecologist would be able to perform the necessary gynecological examinations required for the diagnosis of fibroids.
Your gynecologist would check the uterine condition, shape, and size and may recommend some imaging tests.
Some commonly recommended imaging tests are –
Ultrasound – The gynecologist may recommend an ultrasound to better see the inside of the uterus. A transvaginal ultrasound may be recommended.
Pelvic MRI – A pelvic MRI would provide imaging for the structures in the pelvic region including the uterus and ovaries.
Treating Fibroids and Laparoscopic Surgery For Fibroids
Your doctor would prescribe a treatment that suits your age, fibroids size, and overall health.
Your doctor may prescribe lifestyle changes, medications, or surgery. If your fibroids are causing no symptoms, your doctor may recommend you don’t require fibroids treatment in Delhi at the moment but might need it if the fibroids begin to grow larger or cause symptoms.
Lifestyle Changes and Natural Treatments
Your doctor may recommend you to follow a healthier lifestyle and take acupuncture, yoga, massage, traditional medicines such as traditional Chinese medicines, and heat therapy for cramps (Heat is not to be applied if you have heavy menstrual bleeding).
Making Dietary changes, managing stress levels, and reducing weight may also be recommended.
Medications
Your doctor may prescribe certain medications if they think that you will benefit from them.
Most of these medicines work by regulating your hormonal levels and reducing pain.
Some commonly prescribed medications are –
Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone  (GnRH) Agonists – These medications cause the estrogen and progesterone levels to drop which would eventually stop menstruation and shrink the fibroids.
Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) Antagonists – These medications stop the body from producing hormones such as Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). These medications help to shrink the fibroids.
Intrauterine Device (IUD) – These devices use the hormone progestin.
Over-The-Counter (OTC) anti-inflammatory pain relievers – These medications help reduce the pain due to fibroids.
Birth Control Pills
Surgery and Laparoscopic Surgery For Fibroids
Surgery may be required if the fibroids are causing symptoms and growing larger.
Different types of surgeries used for the removal of fibroids are –
Myomectomy – For Abdominal Myomectomy a large incision is made in the abdomen and the uterus is accessed to remove the fibroids. Myomectomy can also be performed laparoscopically using small incisions from where the surgical tools and the camera are inserted for the surgery.
Hysterectomy – If other treatment options are not effective for your fibroids, Hysterectomy or removal of the uterus may be recommended. Since the uterus is removed in this surgery, the person would not be able to bear children in the future.
Non-Invasive and Minimally Invasive Procedures
Forced Ultrasound Surgery (FUS) – In this non-invasive surgical procedure you lie down inside a special MRI machine that allows your doctor to see the inside of your uterus. The fibroids are destroyed using high-energy, high-frequency sound waves.
Myolysis – This involves the use of procedures that shrink the fibroids using heat sources electric current or laser, or freeze the fibroids using cryomyolysis.
Endometrial Ablation – This procedure involves the destruction of the uterine lining by inserting a special instrument into the uterus and destroying the uterine lining using heat, electric current, hot water, or extreme cold.
Uterine Artery Embolization – In this procedure the blood supply of the fibroids is cut off using small particles that are injected into the uterus.
Take Away
Uterine Fibroids are a common condition that affects a number of women. If you think you might have uterine fibroids, it is best to consult with a gynecologist to discuss how to manage the fibroids. The gynecologist would be able to help you with a treatment plan that suits you.

Innovations in Assisted reproduction techniques (IVF) have always ignited the hopes of many couples wishing to cherish parenthood. Third-party assisted reproduction is one such technique where couples can seek the help of donors to have children. Donor programs also include taking the help of a gestational carrier or a surrogate.
Surrogacy is an extended procedure of IVF where the intended couples can have a surrogate who agrees to carry their child and take care of it for the whole pregnancy term. This procedure involves legal and medical considerations that need to be mediated. IVF Junction welcomes this very ART procedure and provides the necessary support for surrogacy; both to the intended couples as well as the surrogate.
 Reasons for Surrogacy:

What are the Risks and Side effects of IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is one of the widely accepted assisted reproductive procedures. The ray of hope it has brought into the lives of many couples struggling with infertility and conception is not less than a miracle. We all know that every scientific and medical procedure is not a hundred percent guaranteed and carries at least a small aorta of uncertainty and risk. However, assisted Reproductive Technique (ART) has constantly tried to overcome every uncertainty and side-effect to provide better outcomes.
Some of the risks and side-effects of IVF and ways to overcome them are:
Ovarian Stimulation side-effect: Ovarian stimulation is the first step of IVF which requires hormonal interventions to induce ovaries to produce more mature eggs. The side effects here are caused due to hormonal side-effects such as inflammation of ovaries, pain, mood swings, bloating, and many more. These side-effects are generally mild to moderate and recede in a few days.
IVF medication side-effects:
Hormonal treatments in IVF include administration of estrogen and progesterone that are essential to maintain the endometrium for the IVF pregnancy. The estrogen/ Estrace side-effects of IVF include vomiting, bloating, pain in the breasts, weight gain, etc.
Progesterone can be given via injections or vaginal capsules. Pain and swelling in the injected region, nausea, cramps, mood swings are some of the side effects of injectable progesterone. Progesterone side-effects of IVF vaginal capsules are vaginal itching or burning. These side-effects caused due to hormones subside with their lowered effect.
Side-effects of egg retrieval stage: Egg retrieval is an IVF stage where the eggs are retrieved from the mature follicles through a small surgical procedure. Egg retrieval side-effects include mild abdominal pain. On very rare occasions, infections or injury to the adjacent organs/tissues/blood vessels can occur. However, these side effects can be treated with medications including antibiotics and pain relievers.
IVF side-effects on the baby: IVF risks include the risk of conceiving multiples. Transfer to more than one embryo to improve pregnancy chances can lead to this condition. However, pre-implantation genetic screening/diagnosis (PGD-S/D) can help select one viable embryo without our chromosomal/genetic defects and transfer of one embryo can help address multiple IVF pregnancies.
Preterm delivery in an IVF pregnancy is rare. But, it is observed that IVF babies are born with low weight at birth. The use of frozen embryos to fresh embryos for transfer can reduce this side-effect as well.
IVF Junction connects to the network of best fertility clinic in Delhi NCR and Gurgaon who will guide through hassle-free fertility treatment. Proper management of IVF side effects through advanced procedures can ensure positive IVF results. IVF Junction can be your partner to parenthood where every minute treatment protocols are accurately taken care of for a successful IVF journey.

HSG Test for Blocked Fallopian Tubes
If you have been reading about Infertility or talking to your Gynecologist about conceiving, you might have come across something known as “Blocked Fallopian Tubes”, a common cause of people being unable to conceive. We have done a detailed post about Blocked Fallopian Tubes which you must read, but to explain this to you really quickly – Fallopian Tubes are slender tubes that connect the uterus to the ovaries and is the place where fertilisation occurs in the female reproductive tract. If these tubes become blocked – the egg and the sperm are not able to meet in the fallopian tubes and fertilize or if they fertilize, the fertilized egg might not be able to implant into the uterus due to the blocked fallopian tubes or tubal blockage.
It is therefore very important to see if the fallopian tubes are open or tubal blockage is there, so that the most appropriate infertility treatment plan can be advised by your fertility doctor.
HSG is a test that is often recommended by the doctors to see if there is a blockage of fallopian tubes.
HSG Test or Hysterosalpingogram is a simple procedure that is performed by a radiologist and a gynecologist. The person is asked to position themselves as advised by the radiologist on the examination table under a fluoroscope or the X-ray imager, and a speculum is placed by the doctor in the vagina. The cervix is cleaned and the cannula is then placed into the opening of the  cervix. The dye that would be visible on the x-ray is then injected through the cannula and it travels through the uterus into the fallopian tubes. If there is no blockage, the dye would be visible on the x-ray and if there is a blockage, the dye would not be able to reach the ends of the fallopian tubes that are towards the ovaries.
HSG test is a painless test, though some people might face some mild cramping and discomfort. If you feel apprehensive you can let your doctor know your concerns, and they may prescribe medications to help you relax during the HSG test.
After the HSG test, you can continue with your normal activities and there are no special contraindications unless your doctor suggests you refrain from certain things.
After the HSG Test
If blockage of the fallopian tubes is seen on the HSG test, the doctor can advise you to for a laparoscopy. During the laparoscopy, the tubal blockage is seen with the help of a laparoscope. If the doctor thinks that you require a surgical treatment for the tubal blockage, it can be done surgically through the laparoscopy.
If a doctor believes surgically treating the tubal blockage wouldn’t help you conceive, the doctor may recommend you to get an IVF treatment. In an IVF treatment the egg is retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized with the sperm in a lab environment, and the embryo is placed into the uterus for a pregnancy to occur. Since the egg is fertilised outside the reproductive tract, IVF improves the chances of conceiving if there is blockage of fallopian tubes.
If you want to know the HSG test cost, you can get in touch with our team at IVF Junction.

Blocked Fallopian Tubes And Female Infertility
Infertility and difficulty in conceiving can have a range of reasons – from male infertility reasons to female infertility reasons to unexplained infertility reasons – difficulty with conceiving is something a lot of people in today’s world are facing. One common reason for difficulty in conceiving in blocked fallopian tubes, but what exactly is blocked fallopian tubes? Wait, what exactly are fallopian tubes? Read on!
Fallopian tubes are thin structures in the female’s reproductive tract that connect the ovaries to the uterus. These tubes have multiple roles – they help move the released egg towards the uterus and are also the place in the reproductive tract where the egg and the sperm meet to fertilise. The sperm has to travel up the vagina, into the uterus, and towards the fallopian tube to fertilize the egg. Since the egg is released from the ovaries and has to travel through the fallopian tubes towards the uterus and the sperm moves up through the uterus towards the fallopian tube, a blocked fallopian tube can prevent the egg from fertilizing with the sperm. If one fallopian tube is blocked, fertilization might still happen when the ovum is released from the ovary connected to the fallopian tube that is not blocked, but if both fallopian tubes are blocked then the egg wouldn’t be able to fertilize with the sperm.
Fallopian tubes can become blocked due infections, scar tissues and pelvic adhesions. If you have been trying to conceive, it is important to check the health of fallopian tubes and follow the gynecologist’s treatment.
Blocked Fallopian Tubes Symptoms
Blocked fallopian tubes usually do not have symptoms and patients become aware of blocked fallopian tubes when they get Hysterosalpingogram (HSG ) Test on advice of their doctor after having difficulty in conceiving.
Sometimes when the fallopian tubes get fluid filled there might be pain experienced by the patient and if there is an infection in the fallopian tube there might be vaginal discharge.
Blocked Fallopian Tubes Causes
Blocked fallopian tubes can be caused due to a number of reasons. Some of the causes of the blocked fallopian tubes are –
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease – Pelvic     Inflammatory diseases can cause Hydrosalpinx or scarring of the fallopian     tubes.
Endometriosis – In Endometriosis the     endometrium starts growing outside the uterus and if it starts to grow in     the fallopian tubes it can cause blocked fallopian tubes. Endometrial     tissue growing on the outside of other organs can also cause adhesions leading     to blocked fallopian tubes.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) –     Sexually Transmitted Infections such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea can cause     pelvic inflammatory disease which can cause blocked fallopian tubes.
Past Ectopic Pregnancy – An ectopic pregnancy     is a pregnancy that starts to grow and develop outside of the uterus. If     the past ectopic pregnancy started to grow and develop in a fallopian tube     it can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes.
Fibroids – Fibroids can cause blocked     fallopian tubes, and this commonly happens in the proximal part where the     fallopian tubes attach to the uterus.
Past Abdominal Surgery – Past Abdominal     surgery, especially if done on the fallopian tubes can lead to adhesion     formation which causes blocked fallopian tubes.
As you can see, the causes of blocked fallopian tubes are varied. It is important to ensure that you are practicing sexual hygiene to prevent STIs and consult a gynecologist if you experience any pelvic pain, abdominal pain, or menstrual cycle related symptoms to ensure any reproductive health conditions can be treated so that it doesn’t cause blocked fallopian tubes.
Blocked Fallopian Tubes Diagnosis and Treatment
Blocked Fallopian tubes are usually detected on a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) which is a type of X-ray. During an HSG, a dye is injected into the uterus which then moves towards the ovaries through the fallopian tube.
A laparoscopy may be recommended to see if the fallopian tubes are blocked. In a laparoscopy a small incision is made to see the reproductive tract with high precision apparatus. If there is a blocked fallopian tube, laparoscopic surgery would be performed.
If a surgeon feels that surgery might be required, they would recommend that either with the laparoscopy or when the doctor thinks it is required.
Sometimes small blockages in the fallopian tubes are removed after the HSG.
If a doctor feels that IVF is a better option than surgically operating on the fallopian tubes, an IVF treatment might be recommended where the egg retrieval is performed from the ovaries and the sperm is taken from the male, fertilised in a lab, and then placed into the woman’s uterus. This treatment does not require the egg and the sperm to fertilise in the fallopian tubes, as the embryo is directly placed into the uterus after in-vitro fertilisation that happens outside the female reproductive tract.
If you want to know more about the Blocked Fallopian tubes treatment cost, you can contact us at IVF Junction.
Take Away
Blocked Fallopian tubes are a common cause of infertility. It has some preventable causes and can be discussed with your Gynecologist. In some cases the doctor may recommend blocked fallopian tube treatment if the doctor feels that it would help the person conceive naturally after the treatment. If a doctor thinks that the blocked fallopian tubes treatment would not benefit your fertility, they might recommend IVF Treatment. IVF is a procedure that requires you to physically, financially, and emotionally prepare yourself for IVF as it is a long treatment and requires you to be very strict about appointments, medications and injections. IVF costs may be expensive but EMI and financing has made it possible for an expensive infertility treatment to be made affordable for everyone. If you have any questions about IVF and Infertility, feel free to ask them at the IVF Junction Support Forum which is a judgment-free space to discuss infertility and reproductive health. At IVF Junction, YOU are our priority and our partner clinics ensure that they provide you with the best treatment at no hidden costs.

IUI vs IVF : Which fertility Treatment is Right For You?
If you’re thinking about getting an infertility treatment, you might have come across the treatments Intrauterine Insemination or IUI and In-vitro Fertilisation or IVF. Both these treatments are used by fertility doctors depending upon what is the cause of infertility.
Before we understand the IUI vs IVF it is important to know what these treatments are and how they are different from each other.
For a pregnancy to happen, the ovum or the female’s egg that is released from the ovaries needs to fertilize with the male sperm in the fallopian tube of the female reproductive tract to produce an embryo which implants in the uterine lining to form a pregnancy. When this happens naturally, the male sperm has to travel from the vagina to the fallopian tube and fertilize with an ovum to form a viable pregnancy.
IUI involves putting the sperm into the woman’s uterus with the help of a soft catheter. This is synced with the ovulation of the woman to help improve the fertilisation of the egg and the sperm. IUI also helps the sperm travel to the ovum faster, as they have to travel to the fallopian tube from the uterus instead of the vagina. Once fertilisation of the egg and the sperm occur and an embryo is produced it can implant itself in the uterus like in a natural pregnancy. IUI is a simple procedure and is much less costly when compared to IVF.
IVF has different procedures which help with conceiving. In IVF the egg is retrieved from the ovaries, after ovarian stimulation that helps maturing of multiple eggs. These eggs are then prepared and mixed with the sperm in a lab equipment to help the egg and sperm fertilize. Once fertilized and formed into a healthy embryo, one or more embryos are transferred which are then implanted into the uterus. Embryos can also be frozen to be transferred in another cycle, as it is preferred with people having PCOS, or they can be frozen for use in a later cycle if one cycle of IVF fails and subsequent cycles require frozen embryos. IVF treatment procedure can also involve some more procedures if there are any complications with the egg, sperm, uterus or fallopian tubes. IVF is an expensive procedure but can help with a wider range of infertility issues than IUI making it a better option for some people facing infertility issues.
Difference between IUI vs IVF
There are many differences between IUI  vs IVF. It is important the right treatment is provided to you for your requirements for a successful infertility treatment. The following are the differences between the IUI treatment and the IVF treatment –
· Invasiveness – IUI is a less invasive procedure when compared to IVF since in IUI the sperm is placed into the uterus using a soft catheter, whereas in IVF the eggs are invasively taken from the ovaries.
· Effectiveness – IUI may not be effective in the first cycle and multiple cycles may be required. IUI also may not be effective in some conditions where an IVF treatment would work better. IUI is useful when the female egg reserves, uterine health, fallopian tubes and egg quality are good and the sperm quality, morphology, motility and concentration is suitable for an IUI treatment.
·  Cost – IUI is much cheaper when compared to the IVF procedure.
·  Complexity – IVF is a much more complex fertility treatment since it requires multiple procedures such as ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, sperm and egg preparation, fertilization and embryo transfer. Additional treatments such as PESA, TESA, hysteroscopy, and laparoscopy may be required if any complications are to be treated during fertility treatment.
IVF or IUI – Which fertility treatment is right for you?
To know whether you should go for IVF or IUI, your doctor will do a consultation and see what process you can benefit better from for your infertility treatment.
Some of the factors to consider are –
·  Age of the people trying to conceive – Age is a very important consideration as a person who is younger can try for IUI first and then go for IVF if IUI fails since IUI is a simpler procedure.
·   Reason for Infertility – IUI wouldn’t work for every infertility reason, for e.g if the fallopian tubes are blocked then IUI wouldn’t be able to fertilize with the egg. A surgery for removal of the blockage in the tubes followed by an IUI later may be recommended, or your doctor may recommend IVF if they feel that it would be a better approach. Similarly, in people who are having unexplained fertility IUI may be preferred before IVF.
·  Male Infertility – Male infertility is a common condition where IUI might be preferred before going for IVF since if there is a lesser concentration of the sperm in the ejaculate, an IUI can help it reach the fallopian tubes more easily. However if the concentration is below the concentration that is required for an IUI, IVF may be a better approach combined with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) as the sperm would be directly injected into the ovum in a lab and the embryo is transferred into the uterus. If there are other male infertility problems such as ejaculation related problems then also IUI can be beneficial.
·  Antibodies in cervical mucus – Some women can produce anti-sperm antibodies which are present in the cervical mucus. IUI places the sperm into the uterus thereby preventing this from happening thereby letting the sperm travel to the ovum.

Test Tube Baby : What is a Test Tube Baby?
Test Tube Baby is a term used for babies born with the help of the In-vitro Fertilisation Fertilisation techniques where the sperm and the ovum are fertilised outside of the uterus and then reimplanted at the embryo stage into the mother’s uterus to achieve a viable pregnancy. Test tube baby means a baby that has been born by IVF treatment procedure, which means that there is no difference between IVF and Test tube baby. Test Tube Baby treatment is another name for IVF treatment. The word “test tube baby” however, is a misnomer. This is because the embryo for IVF treatment doesn’t grow and develop in the test tube, but in a woman’s uterus like a natural pregnancy does. The fertilisation of ovum and sperm does not happen in a test tube either, it happens in a petri dish. This word basically came into being to denote that the fertilisation happens out of the reproductive tract, but it is not an accurate name for IVF treatment. ‘It is important to understand that babies that are conceived using IVF Treatment develop in the uterus just like naturally conceived babies.
TEST TUBE BABY TREATMENT = IN-VITRO FERTILISATION TREATMENT
Difference between IVF and Test Tube Baby
Test tube baby treatment is a name that is used by some laymen for the IVF treatment procedure. IVF and test tube baby treatment are the same treatment procedure, and hence there is no difference between the two except for that of the name. Both the names are used for In vitro fertilisation treatment procedure which is a part of Assisted Reproductive Techniques to help people conceive.
Test Tube Baby Process
Test tube baby process or the IVF treatment procedure has been explained by us in this post. IVF treatment involves fertilizing the egg and the sperm in a lab and then transferring the embryo formed after fertilisation into the uterus. Test tube baby process or IVF treatment involves initial consultation, Ovarian Stimulation, Transvaginal Oocyte Retrieval, Egg and Sperm Preparation, Egg Fertilization, Embryo transfer and then pregnancy test. Your doctor may recommend you to change a few lifestyle habits to Improve fertility naturally in women and Improve fertility naturally in men. Being in optimal health has a good impact on your IVF treatment and it can improve the success rates of your IVF cycle.
Cost of Test Tube Baby
Cost of test tube baby or the cost of IVF treatment procedure is calculated by adding the cost of IVF cycle cost (This includes initial consultations, ultrasounds, blood tests, lab charges, consumables and media charges etc), Cost of Injections and Medication, and the cost of treatment for any complications. The cost details for specific procedures as well as approximate cost for IVF treatment has been explained in this post. Different IVF clinics can often tell different cost of test tube baby treatment, and hence it is important to have a correct idea about the IVF treatment cost. This post tells you how you can calculate your IVF Treatment Cost using the IVF Junction Cost Calculator.
IVF treatment procedure is an expensive treatment procedure because it is done by highly qualified experts using advanced equipment. You shouldn’t let cost be a determining factor when choosing an IVF expert or an IVF clinic since it does not make sense to save money at the expense of risking your health. Always choose an IVF experience who is well experienced, trained, and has an expertise in the field of IVF. The IVF clinic that you choose should have ethical practice, patient-centric approach, and utilise advanced technology.
If you think that the cost of the test tube baby or the IVF is out of your affordability, it is better to finance your IVF using EMI options. IVF Junction can help you finance your IVF treatment according to your affordability where you would be required to pay small monthly installments of money as EMIs with an interest rate instead of paying the total amount as a lump sum. This would significantly reduce the financial constraint that can be caused due to the cost of the test tube baby. EMIs allow you to afford an expensive treatment without compromising on the quality of treatment. Paying for the IVF Treatment with monthly installments of money allows you to get the IVF treatment from the best IVF experts but at the same time not strain your financial situation. IVF Junction helps you with representation, documentation, and loan procedures so that you can finance your treatment with ease.
