I used to live in my grandfather’s house — a small home filled with my mother’s voice and my sister’s laughter.

But in one moment… everything disappeared.

When I am appointed to represent a child, my first action is to separate them from their parents and tell them the following things:

1. I am their attorney. I do not work for their parent or the judge or the cops. I don’t care what any of those people want.

2. My job is to listen to them and try and make what they want happen in court. (At this point I make a joke about how most people want me to get them out of trouble but if someone wanted to be in trouble I would do my best.)

3. What they tell me is confidential. It goes nowhere unless they agree to it. (If old enough, I talk to them about mandatory reporters, and how I’m a mandatory non reporter.)

4. I will give them lots of advice because I’ve been doing court for a while and I know a lot about it, and they don’t. It’s all really complicated, and if they don’t understand what’s happening it’s my job to help them figure it out.

5. They will make the decisions. (At this point I usually have to reassure them that I’ll help, I’ll speak for them in front of the judge, and I’ve got their back. It’s scary to have an adult say you’re in charge, most of the time.)

6. I tell them I know it’s absolutely wild to have some stranger come in here and say “hey, you can trust me!” and that I get if they don’t believe everything right away, because I plan to show them through my actions and my words that I’ll fight for them.

7. But nonetheless, I will treat them like a person who can make decisions, because they are living their life and I am not.

I do not:

Pretend to be cool.

Try to be their BFF.

Overwhelm them with detail.

Let their parents in the room until the kid asks for them. (I provide openings for this, and ask if the kid wants their parent to help them remember and understand.)

I want to emphasize I went into this job knowing nothing about how to interact with vulnerable populations, especially children. The training was minimal, and my role means that I can literally walk into a facility and get an unmonitored visit with a minor client one on one.

In my years of practice I have never felt threatened by a child, even one that was “violent” and “unstable.” It turns out just saying “hi, I think you’re a person with thoughts” is wildly successful? Now people treat me like I have special Child Whisperer powers. My powers are that I ask the child what’s up and I’m not scared to say things that are objectively awkward. I know nothing about anything.

not to get overly poetic about it but...nalu as a dynamic is kinda crazy to me like. what if we were best friends? what if we were kinda silly and ridiculous and stupid about each other? what if we were connected across time and space for 400 years? what if we bumped into each other on a random tuesday? what if you changed my life? what if we had a dogged, unwavering and irrational faith in each other right from the get go? what if the greatest tragedy of my life was directly linked to the greatest tragedy of yours? what if, in a different timeline, i watched you and the rest of my friends die, and there was nothing i could do about it? what if i watched a future version of you die and i sobbed over your broken body? what if you were my last tether to humanity? what if i broke the laws of magic to save you? what if you came back to me in the place we first met? what if we were meant to be in every single universe? what if we still chose each other, every single time, anyway?

Aang’s character arc is like if Zuko was like hey I don’t have my firebending anymore like he did in canon

except they never did anything about it and the show was like it’s fine you can just use swords from here on out not a problem

and he still just accepts the agni kai against Azula you know a firebending duel

and then Zuko wins it because Azula happened to shove him into a pillar and he magically has his firebending back without learning anything about firebending from the dragons like the origin or meaning behind it

and then instead of Katara using a literal physical chain to restrain her, Zuko is like actually I got this super magic rope from a giant frog when we were flying over the ocean we can use to bind her

and then he still becomes firelord after all that bullshit and everyone acts like that was a great way to end his character arc

Something about this sequence of frames specifically makes me feel so feral.

There’s no reason for Katara to even feel bad here. Azula has never been someone even close to an ally. She killed Aang, colonized Ba Sing Se, attacked the Western Air Temple, literally just shot lightning through Zuko’s heart with the full intention of letting him die and tried to end Katara’s life when she went to heal him. Why would Katara care if she’s having a breakdown because she failed at those last two things? She’s an empathetic person, but that’s pushing it, lmao. The very sincere pain on her face here doesn’t make sense.

Until, the next frame.

Katara doesn’t have a reason to feel bad for Azula, but Zuko does. That’s his sister, after all. So, Katara feels for him, because she cares about him, not in an obligational “you saved my life, I saved yours, we’re on the same team, against one enemy” way, but in a “I really feel the pain you’re in right now because I love you” way.

This is peak animators shipping zutara lmao and you can’t convince me otherwise.
