Pikachu in Pokémon - I Choose You!
It's been two years since we said goodbye to Ash and Pikachu, so I guess I'm talking about this now! Pokémon - I Choose You! is the very first episode of the Pokémon animated series. It shows us the way Ash and Pikachu first meet, their rough start, and how the two become friends.
One thought I've had is that we're never really given a reason for why Pikachu doesn't want to go with Ash at first. I have some thoughts about Pikachu's reasons for the way he acts, both what I think it is... and what I think it's not.
I'll start by saying what I'm pretty sure it isn't: I doubt that it's due to disliking humans or wanting to return to the wild. He's always quite friendly with Professor Oak, and he appears to be trying to not leave Pallet Town rather than just go somewhere else. And I'm also going to bring up the 20th movie (for those unfamiliar, it's an alternate continuity retelling of the beginning of Ash and Pikachu's journey) here, because it seems relevant: Pikachu doesn't start in his ball in in this version and seems quite content and happy to wander around the lab right up until Ash picks him up.
Now, that's interesting, and considering Pikachu in other episodes, I kind of realized that he does his own thing a lot. He's absolutely his own character with his own place in whatever group dynamic there is in each series. And it's something I really noticed when looking back on some non-Journeys episodes, the other humans will talk directly to Pikachu. And I feel like it's possible that he was worried that wouldn't happen. And, honestly, I can't blame him. Ash didn't listen to Pikachu at first. He kept trying to make him go in the ball and even tied a rope around him and dragged him along.
But Ash did start listening, and when push came to shove, he put Pikachu before himself. As I see it, Ash proved himself as someone who could be a true friend to Pikachu, and that's what made the difference.
A lot of this mirrors my thought process when writing a one-shot fic (this one), where I tried to figure out what exactly was going on with Pikachu in episode one because it was relevant to the fic.
Another point to this is Pikachu's age. It's not clear how exactly Pokémon aging works, but we do know that Pikachu is probably 4-5 years old when he meets Ash, and I think it's generally suggested that they're about equivalent in age. And also they have very similar personalities. So maybe it's not such a surprise that they butted heads anyway from that alone and had to learn to listen to each other.
And when it comes to Ash listening to Pikachu? Well, I've talked about how Pikachu choosing not to evolve is important, this post is sort of a sequel to that, but now I'm going to talk about the Poké Ball for a little bit. Because, out of the entire 1,200+ episode series, Ash only asks Pikachu to get into his ball in THREE of those episodes. This one, Showdown in Pewter City, and Snow Way Out!.
Past the first half of Kanto, it never happened again. There's a reason that the simple act of recalling Pikachu in the 20th movie's climax was such a shock, despite how it happens dozens upon dozens of times with other Pokémon.
Ash listens, and I see the rough start with Pikachu as him learning to listen. The show doesn't just tell you he and his Pokémon are friends, it shows you. It's in this, it's in the way he interacts with his Pokémon, and it's in the way he trains them in a way that works for them, as individuals.
All of that starts with Pikachu.
