Visa and Mastercard may be getting a lot of calls about their adult content policies, but I just called in to PayPal and not only was there no wait, the customer service rep I got had never had one of these calls before (they were very nice about it.)

Don't overlook the online processors - even more than Visa and Mastercard they are the ones pressuring online retailers. PayPal is the one that's been pressuring Patreon over the last year or so.

I've had no luck reaching Stripe, all of the numbers people have dug up ring through as disconnected.

Our Union Hall Needs Help!

Friends, followers, and Fellow Workers, the Gainesville IWW's beloved union hall, the Civic Media Center, is in need. The Civic Media Center of Gainesville, Florida, provides countless vital community resources, such as:

The Stetson Kennedy Library, a reading room and leftist library that is home to 15,000 books, journals, newspapers, and magazines.

The Travis Fristoe Zine Library, largest independent zine collection in the southeastern United States.

A meeting space for countless local activism and social justice groups such as the IWW, Food Not Bombs, and Books to Prisoners.

The Gainesville Free Store, which was founded to help local transgender people access affirming clothing and toiletries as well as other important items. The Free Store has seen so much success that they've expanded to serve the entire Gainesville community.

The Gainesville Free Grocery Store, which offers no-questions-asked food to anyone who walks in.

A cool, dry place to rest, with an open bathroom frequently used by our unhoused neighbors.

A venue for local musicians and poets to perform, including during the renowned music festival FEST.

So, so much more. Losing this community hub would be an absolutely devastating blow to our town and our union. We cannot let it die.

Organizing Don'ts #4 [a little black cat says: Don’t organize alone!]

There is no such thing as an organizing super hero, who swoops in and unionizes all their fellow workers. [a little dog wearing a cape is flying and yelling “Follow meeee!” with an asterisk near their head. Their coworkers are below with raised fists chanting “Yeah!” The asterisk at the bottom of the panel says: “Fantasy”]

Trying to do everything on your own is the perfect way to burn out quickly and accomplish nothing. [the little dog is sitting on a staircase dejectedly, looking at their phone and thinking: “I’m quitting. What’s the point? I’m bad as this anyway.”]

Whether or not you have a workplace committee yet, never organize alone. Your Union will always help you. I get asked now and then why someone should join the IWW as opposed to any of the respected business unions available. 

Personally, my industry is not unionised, so there’s that reason. This brief comic speaks to the real, deeper reason. 

Those other unions won’t fight for our freedom from wage slavery. 

They will try to improve the conditions of our shared enslavement and I appreciate that, but as I’ve said before, I want The Big Win.

Why am I in the Industrial Workers of the World? [a little black cat sits in a field of red, asking the audience this question]

For the logo. Let me explain… [the little black cat is looking up at the insignia of the IWW, a globe in a circle beneath the letters I W W with three stars among them]

The better-known business unions in the states all have logos of varying appeal… [a collection of business union logos, including the Teamsters, the UAW, the SEIU, the AFLC-CIO and the UFCW]

But for all their history and iconography, none of them have what this logo has… Those three stars. [little black cat looks up at the IWW insignia, with the 3 stars glowing]

Really, for me, it’s the last of the three stars that matters the most. It represents the third and final aspect of our work… [The star is glowing in the center of the frame]

Emancipation [chains being broken]

Emancipation of the working class in struggle and at war, and the Earth that feeds and holds us all. [chains encompassing the planet Earth being broken]

Both the IWW and the business unions fight for higher wages and better benefits, which are both critically important, but… [a big, buff black cat flexes imposingly next to a big, buff dog. They are intimidating a blue duck who is sitting behind a desk labeled ‘boss’ and sweating nervously]
