“Mmm… I’ll let you know if I agree then—y’know, after I meet the legion of ladies following you like an entourage.” Izzy’s lips quirked in their further amusement. “Not fishnets or garters? Damn, I guess I’m missing out on even more fun.”

“They’d prefer I was celibate for all time, but I’ve never been one to play by the rules—theirs or anyone else’s.” She tapped her lips thoughtfully, still taking in the delicious vampire before her. “But does your correct guess mean it’s working? Or that I’m far too obvious?”

“Romance, huh?” Izzy considered the thought for a moment. It wasn’t exactly her speed, at least so far. Flings and spicy nights seemed much more… well, simple. “That would require a ‘fellow’ to fit the bill then, wouldn’t it? And agreeing to more than a few nights in between the sheets… I think I still prefer that method of the two. A bit of fun.” She narrowed her eyes a bit at his latter comment before settling back in her chair with a smile. “You’re not half as scary as you think you are, you know that?”

Izzy raised her glass with a playful eye roll before taking a generous sip of her drink. It was so unlike her to be on the back foot in these instances, let alone bashful. “And do I get to know your name, Mr. Dark Mysterious Fellow?”

Izzy mirrored the toast, still fighting a proper smile. He was charming, to say the least. And the banter was certainly working in his favor at present. “I don’t plan on going anywhere… or if I do, I don’t plan on going alone.” She raised her brows in an almost silent challenge. “Take that how you will.”

“My brothers are hypocrites at the best of times, so I don’t exactly have the same dynamic to boast of. One plays the goody-two-shoes while he slinks off with his drop dead gorgeous boyfriend, and the other has always been a manwhore but scrunches up his nose at any of my escapades. And both of them have been far more critical of me than they’ve had any cause to be lately. So… I figure I’m overdue a bit of mischief.” She leaned in closer to him then, extending her free hand. “I’m Isabelle by the way. Or Izzy to friends.”

Izzy couldn’t help but raise a brow at the comment, although it didn’t quite falter her mood or expression otherwise. “I would say the same about me, but I’ve yet to have to compete for attention. Although I suppose there’s a first time for everything.”

His charm was so natural, as if each sentiment was pre-designed for such a meeting. Normally that type of flattery might have made her a touch wary, but in this moment she found herself only more captivated and curious. “Oh, but there are so much more enjoyable things to do than stake you,” she mused, taking him in again with a rather devilish smirk. “And I wouldn’t want to cut the fun short so soon.”

The comment and paired eyebrow wiggle made Izzy laugh a bit. “Both, actually. It’s like they’re rubbing it in my face. And even if I don’t actually begrudge either of them any happiness, I will still make them go grey early as penance. That’s the job of a little sister.” She hummed thoughtfully as she sipped her drink. “Never is a long time, you know.”

The kiss to her hand brought about the faintest hint of blushing to her cheeks. It was uncharacteristic of Izzy, really, to be even slightly disarmed by that sort of thing. Her gaze flitted from the sight of her hand against his chest back up to meet his, another smile tugging at her lips now as she leaned in closer to him. “Anything you’d like.”

“Well, Odette would have accomplished that before me if she wasn’t off the market. So you can either count your blessings or curse her name,” Izzy replied, taking the offered cocktail. “You’ll have to let me know which route you take in the end. I’ve been told I’m a lot to handle.”

She watched him curiously as she sipped her drink, although her amusement was evident in the light quirk of her lips. “But the deviants of the world have more fun, don’t they? What’s the point without a bit of risk after all.”

“Jaded? That’s a new one,” Izzy noted with a laugh. “Probably just me. I like a little bit of personality when I get hit on. Izzy waved the file in his view before dropping it on top of the inbox. “You’re no fun. What happened to all that energy from the other night? You were actually smiling for once. I almost fainted in the shock.”

Izzy tossed a pillow at Jace from where she was lying down. “You’re an ass.” She sat up on her elbows for a brief moment just to look at him. “He’s like a gentle giant. About as scary as a Bernese Mountain Dog. I on the other hand think of myself as a Doberman. And you…”

“You’re one of those scary little hairless things that people insist are dogs.”

Izzy rolled her eyes in an exaggerated fashion as she flopped back onto the sofa beside Alec. “And you would know all about devastatingly gorgeous fae men. So are you sure it’s me that you’re imagining at this point.” She tilted her head to look at him with a wiggle of her eyebrows. “Or does Helenus have a devastatingly handsome brother you’re trying to set me up with?”

“Maybe by Cece, Lexi, and Parker. But then again, you all know each other well enough. You don’t know me enough not to be biased, so I don’t care for it,” Izzy pointed out, dusting off the spot on her shoulder he’d punched. The latter comments brought about a genuine fit of laughter though, and she held her sides until it passed. “Ooo, that was a good one,” she said as she caught her breath. “If I was sweet on you, I’d have ripped off your clothes already—and then some. But I haven’t, so keep dreaming.”

“Good for us,” she shot back. “And don’t forget Jace. He’d knock your teeth out first at least… but I mostly was warning you not to call me a bitch again. Because my treatment of you for that would be far less straightforward than killing you.”

Izzy sighed in a way that neared a groan. “You ramble too much.”

Izzy raised a brow. “Maybe for you. Most of the English boys are just achingly debonair. And me? Well, I know better than to ask for your opinion.” She reached out to pat his chest in the spot he’d thumped. “Keep telling yourself that, sweetpea.”

She pointedly raised her eyes. “How very vanilla.” At the last pair of words she moved swiftly to catch him by the chin, tilting his head down to face her. “Careful what you call me. I’ve been told that I don’t play nice.” Izzy released him then, although her gaze was more akin to a glare.

The comments silenced her, if only for a moment. It wasn’t the sort of thing she typically preyed on by any means, but this wasn’t exactly a typical interaction given her lack of knowledge about Hunter. “I’d say that doesn’t exactly make you unique.”

Izzy gestured to Hunter. “Well you’re acting like an ass, a gossip, and a judgy prude right now, so what other adjectives and titles should I add to the list?”
