I’m that way with Joel, I headcanon him with unhealthy coping mechanisms. Why? Because I coped unhealthily and seeing a character cope the same why I did is comforting. It helps me cope healthily. You can say my portrayal of it isn’t accurate, that I play into stereotypes, but that is still my experience you’d be calling stereotypes. And what you’re doing right now, is calling Cozette and any other person who identifies with the NPD Chase headcanon’s experience a stereotype. Unrealistic. Ableist. Not true. You are calling mentally ill people’s experiences unrealistic and dangerous. THAT is the real ableism here.

Okay. I wasn’t going to say anything, but I’m actually really annoyed now. You keep saying the Chase Ambrose NPD headcanon is “ableist” or “harmful,” and that it makes people with NPD look like monsters. Um… did you ever stop to think maybe someone with actual experience made that headcanon? Because—shocker—I DID. I literally based it off MYSELF.

I have actual personal experience with NPD traits, I’ve done tons of research, and I’ve talked to people who have been clinically diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. And guess what? Not only do they agree with the headcanon, some of them actually LOVE it. They think it’s finally a version of NPD representation that isn’t just “evil guy gets punched in the end” or “manipulative mastermind villain.” It’s complex. It’s sad. It’s personal. That’s the point.

And before anyone comes at me with the “but Chase changes so that means it’s a cure” argument, NO. I’m not saying his NPD was “cured.” That’s not even how personality disorders work. I’m saying his brain injury interrupted his old coping mechanisms and forced him into a different situation. That doesn’t erase anything. That just shifts how he functions. If anything, it makes him more lost. More unstable. And yeah, that can happen. You can still have a disorder even if your behavior changes. That’s why mental illness is complicated and not just a checklist of symptoms.

Also, the “Gordon Korman didn’t mean it that way” argument is SO tired. Gordon Korman also said he had no idea what NPD even WAS when he wrote the book. So why are we acting like his word is gospel now? If he doesn’t care, why do y’all care more than him? He literally told people it was okay to read Chase however they want, and he even ENCOURAGED people to explore different interpretations. That includes people who think Chase has NPD. Stop acting like it’s some crime.

And you know what? Not everyone with NPD is the same. Some people have different traits, some people relate to Chase because of how he hides shame with charm, or pushes people away with cruelty, or acts like he doesn’t care when he really, really does. That’s VALID. That doesn’t mean he’s a villain. It means he’s human.

So no, the NPD headcanon isn’t “bad.” What’s bad is acting like people with NPD can’t even see themselves in characters unless it’s through some “official” diagnosis that makes everyone else comfortable. Let people explore mental illness in fiction without yelling “ableist” every five seconds. Especially when the person writing it LITERALLY LIVES WITH IT.

Maybe next time, instead of jumping to conclusions, try asking where the headcanon actually came from. You might learn something. Or not. Whatever.

Like I said, she would be in the earlier stages of it, but she has professional therapists who she is working through this with, as someone who is a personal friend of Cozette I can tell you she isn’t claiming to have NPD for no reason. She has had narcissistic tendencies/traits for a while now, and saw the same in Chase, who she identified with! It is why she kins him, and why she headcanons this for him. You have no right to tell someone whether they don’t or do have the traits/early signs for a disorder.

Are you saying present Chase can’t have NPD because he doesn’t show the same behavior as past Chase? Why is it a problem someone headcanon a character with NPD after they go through a redemption arc, no one is claiming the fall “fixed” his NPD (except you, apparently)

A lot of designs just come out from the artist's regular art styles or headcanons. Also, I know of a lot of people with dyed hair on sports teams/are conservative. I do find some designs or headcanons OOC (also as an LGBT+ person), so I still understand what you mean!

I recommend asking the people who made the character designs about their headcanons and how they have been implemented in the character designs.
