MARY & JAI
mary was a creature of habit , even when that habit was trying their best not to outwardly have one . they always walked home from work . they never walked the same route twice in a row . and it was only about twenty minutes door to door . a quick jaunt from horizont alley to the leaky cauldron then from there it wasn’t too far from charing cross road to the little soho flat she called home . and usually she had her head on a swivel for every step of that walk . usually . but today had been a long day , opening through till just before the happy hour rush , and maybe mary wasn’t quite as present as she usually was . or maybe she definitely wasn’t as her path home today took her clean into another person .
❝ ay ! watch it ! ❞ yelling out advice they themselves should have been heeding even as the other made an effort to stop mary’s fall . but the second she recognised him mary’s face took a little journey all of its own : from offense to recognition to maybe the hint of a little smile . ❝ a thought we said we were gon try an’ no see each other again ❞ she managed after a wee second . ❝ but am thinking this doesnae count as whit we were meanin’ ❞
he smirked a little at their outburst, if only because it didn’t sound so offensive coming out of one so much smaller than him. not that he underestimated the other; he had watched them heal during his time in training, and anyone that could come back the way that they did from what they had suffered was stronger than most... well, everyone he knew. jai might be a dick (no, he was definitely an ass - there was no doubt about that at all), but he didn’t underestimate anyone.
“you made that promise to yourself, love,” he said, teasing them back with a light laugh. he moved back when he was sure the other wasn’t going to fall over into the street, where muggle vehicles passed by with no knowledge of the duos conversation. “i had nothing to do with it. i am a man of my word, after all.” he placed a hand on his chest as if he truly mean the words he was saying. they were, of course, bullshit, but mary didn’t need to know that. and even then, he was sure that they could see right through him. “what are you doing about these parts?” he asked, raising an eyebrow as he moved to stuff his hands into the pockets of the leather jacket he threw on whilst leaving his apartment this morning.”

“ you might be one of those men some day soon, “ she countered back, teasingly before leaning her back against the counter, facing him. she felt herself relax for the first time in a while; no longer tense because the other wasn’t going to ask her about how she was really doing. “ so you just came in here in the middle of the day solely because you wanted one ? not judging. just curious, “
jai placed his hand over his heart, pretending as if she’d actually wounded him with her words. he leaned back, the back of his barstool catching him so he didn’t go too far back. “why would you wish such a fate on anyone, let alone a paying customer?” he asked jokingly, shaking his head as he righted himself, both hands going back up to the top of the counter. “just needed a drink after a shitty shift at work, is all,” he confessed, shrugging his shoulders. “but that’s quite a regular occurrence.”

SIRIUS & JAI
sirius cocks his head to the side to throw his smirk’s jai’s way , eyes giving a slow blink to emphasise the tease in his own answer : “ only in practice . ” sirius’ arms cross over his chest before answering , glancing off . “ needed a quick smoke before deciding what to do with my life , ” he echoes , another tease in parroting jai’s answer . “ or at least in the period between the shop closing early and my next plans . ” he turns to raise a brow over pointing out a part of that statement in his next question . “ is that the trick to finding you , then ? waiting in random alleyways by st mungo’s ? ”
jai met sirius’ smirk with his own mirrored back at him, reaching up to run his fingers through his bleached hair, ruffling it despite it being unnecessary. it was london, and it was windy, after all. nature did it for him. “practice does make perfect, or so i hear,” he agreed, nodding his head and looking at the wall for a moment before he found his attention moving back to sirius. “you sound quite busy,” he said, his voice lilted with amusement. “how could you have possibly made time for this riveting conversation?” he shifted, his hands moving to shove into the pockets of the sports jacket he wore. “you make me sound like a predator lurking in dark corners. i simply find it nice not to have to listen to the tragic conversations between passersby on the main streets. peace and quiet is so... pleasant a lot of the time.”

sirius quirks a brow up at jai’s choice of words , lip quirked . “ didn’t you ? ” he pushes up off his own spot to step closer , shoulders lifting in a slow , exaggerated shrug as he approaches . “ there is an argument to be made about biases in interpretation , isn’t there ? ” he says , as if idly . “ personally , i’d argue this is simply a very sad wall to look at , regardless of your personal state . ”
jai chuckled in amusement, tongue running over his lips as he looked down at the ground and back up to the other. “got something to prove to me, black?” he asked teasingly. he turned and leaned against the wall that had turned into the topic of their conversation, kicking up a leg so the bottom of his foot rested against it. “it wasn’t my first choice in scenery. not my fault that it’s the nearest wall in the closest alleyway to st. mungo’s,” he pointed out. “needed a quick smoke before i went home for the day.” he tilted his head slightly. “why are you wandering into random alleyways? unless, of course, it was for the pleasure of my company. not that i would blame you.”

“ i think i could do a lot better if it was an opening line, “ the red head countered with a slight smile before beginning to go through the process of pouring the drink. “ it usually depends on the day. today, i am anyone’s ear or shoulder to lean on, “ placing the glass in front of jai.
“oh, i pity all the men that come into this bar on a day where you do have better lines,” he teased. “i’m sure you can make them buy whatever you wanted them to. the tips you probably receive.” scoffing, he shook his head with an amused smile on his face, reaching forward and taking the glass from her. he raised it in thanks. “cheers, love,” he said, and took a sip. “today is your lucky day because i don’t need an ear or shoulder.” he never really found himself to be a guy who poured out his heart while drinking.

MARY & JAI
jai’s day had left... quite a lot to be desired. he hadn’t gone to work with any of the training quidditch teams, instead deciding to stay at st. mungo’s and assist where help was needed, and it had been a hectic day. instead of apparating home, jai had decided that a walk would help settle the tension that had settled in his muscles, his shoulders tight and uncomfortable.
it was a touch cold, so his hands were shoved into the pockets of the leather jacket he wore, and he rounded a corner, trying his best not to run into anyone walking along the sidewalk, but to no avail. he bumped into a passerby, and he stopped immediately, reaching out to catch them to make sure that they wouldn’t fall. “hell, i’m sorry,” he said, looking down and finding a familiar face in front of him. his worried expression shifted into that of a knowing smiling. “it’s you,” he added, his eyes dropping to look her over. “fancy seeing you here.” charming, as ever. // @mmacdonvlds

CALLA & JAI
she winced, knowing immediately what her answer should be. if she missed this meeting, she would also miss whatever grand opportunity it was that held an owl tapping on her window so violently, holding a memo that promised an easy go. calla also knew that she was not the only operative who received the transmission, which was why she hit the ground running. “oh, that really isn’t fair.” but on the other hand, a week in london wouldn’t be the worst thing. she hadn’t been home for more than three consecutive days since yule. a few naps would be nice. she sighed, her mind made up before she even started wondering. “but, what the hell.” she slipped into the cloak then held her hand out for him to start walking. “after you.”
“life isn’t fair, blondie,” he said, grinning despite her obvious annoyance about having to choose between work and coffee. jai watched her face as she argued with herself in her head, leaning back on his heels. he was happy to know that caffeine won, and he brought his hands together to clap once, happily. “perfect,” he responded, moving to grab the hand she held out to insist he lead and wrap her arm around his own as he started down the street. “how have you been?” he asked, looking down at her. “i feel as though i haven’t seen you in... quite a long time. don’t tell me you’re avoiding me?”

@unforgivableboost
“hey, hi,” she said, breathless, as she handed them the cloak she had over her arm. “could you hold this for like…” finishing that sentence meant she had an idea of how long it would take to shake the hangover out of her bones (there hadn’t been time to find a potion), so she kept quiet. calla briefly flashed a finger at them, the one pleading for patience, before flipping her head over. immediately she began shaking her hair with rabid fingers, tousling the look to hopefully decrease the lumps from passing out on wet hair. finally, she righted herself, a grateful smile on her face as she retrieved her item. “woke up late, and if you didn’t already know, goblins don’t exactly like the effortless look.” in truth? she could have used a vanity charm, but she had been angry with the bank for shacking her up in a hovel, so minimal effort reciprocation was the way.
jai paused, waiting wordlessly as he held her cloak while he waited for her to adjust herself. he tilted his head, watching her quietly, an amused smirk on his face all the while. “what i hear, avery, is that you’re making excuses,” he teased, chuckling under his breath while he held out her cloak and allowed her to retrieve it from his arms. he shoved his hands into his pockets. “does running late mean we can’t go and get a coffee? i’m going to need a shite ton of caffeine to get through today, so i’m going whether or not you are,” he tells her.

“ you look like you could use a drink or several, “ the red headed witch raised an eyebrow as she finished off the mundane task of wiping down the bar counter, “ i heard that bartenders make quite excellent listeners so if you want to talk about it, we can. there’s no judgement here, “
jai laughed softly, moving to sit up on the bar stool with a light smile on his face. “do you say that to all your customers? it’s quite an opening line,” he teased, moving to take off his coat and put it on the seat beside him. he rolled up the sleeves of his dress shirt and leaned onto the bar. “but you’re right. i could use a drink. bourbon, straight, please.” he tapped on the bar top. “are you always offering to be customer’s therapist, or am i just lucky?”

“ looking for the art exhibit too , are you ? ” sirius lifts a hand out of his pocket to point to the wall in front of them , though it very literally is nothing but a brick wall . it’s simply unlike like him to stay quiet with any sort of company . “ i personally took the darker corner there to symbolise the artist’s state of mind . thoughts ? ”
jai turned to sirius with an eyebrow raised, the blunt in his fingers falling and dropping to the ground as he ground it with the toe of his shoes. “didn’t realize you were so... deep, black,” he joked, smirking a little as he pushed his hands into the pockets of his dark trousers. “but i think you’re projecting a little, don’t you?”

( cis man | he/him | archie renaux ) —— isn’t that jai deverill? yeah that is them, outside the leaky cauldron! they used to be in slytherin but apparently they now work as a mediwizard at st. mungo's. they always seemed to remind me of straight bourbon, rolled up sleeves of a crisp white dress shirt, beat up boxing gloves, wrapped knuckles & lipstick stained skin, which seems about right. anyway i’ve heard they’re still a bit charming, sarcastic, and loyal. they’re twenty-two now but some things never change! i wonder how being a half-blood is affecting them after school, especially now they’re neutral (order bias)? when was it they graduated again, 1974? has it really been that long...
about jai
full name: jai zaiden deverill
age: 22
birthday: august 1. 1956
zodiac: leo
gender: cis male
sexuality: bisexual
blood status: half-blood
job: mediwizard
former school: hogwarts (slytherin house)
birthplace: london, uk
biography
jai zaiden deverill was born to two wizarding parents, both of which had prayed that their son had magic like they did. jai’s grandmother, his father’s mother, was a muggle, and while his father’s family had old money, making them extremely wealthy in the muggle world, but in the wizarding world? they were practically nothing. it gave his parents a bit of a complex when he was growing up, and while jai didn’t fault them for it, he did feel a certain kind of pressure to be someone bigger than who he became.
at hogwarts, he was sorted into slytherin, and if he’d been a pureblood, he was sure that he would have fit right in, but he’d always felt a little out of place despite it all. it was why he developed a reputation for being a charmer, a flirt. if he could hide behind flirtatious comments and lustful gazes, no one would be able to notice how much of an outsider he felt he was. the only place where he didn’t feel othered was the quidditch field. he played as a chaser for the slytherin team from his third year at hogwarts until his last, where he suffered an injury that kept him from playing the rest of the season, and changed his entire view on the game. it took him years before he actually stepped back out onto a pitch.
after hogwarts, when his parents had decided that he would never live up to the expectations that they have set before him, he decided that he wasn’t going to allow them to dictate what he did with his life. instead, he chose something (for the first time) that was solely for him. he started training at st. mungo’s, and for the first time in his life, he felt as though he was actually helping people. this was the more that his parents had wanted for him, even if it wasn’t what they had pictured.
he realized he could do something with the training, and despite his drawbacks, he decided to put his work at st. mungo’s and his love for quidditch and combined them. he now works for multiple quidditch teams as their mediwizard, where he works with injuries and anything else that they might need medically.
personality
jai is a MAJOR flirt. if you’re breathing, he’s flirting. he does not have any boundaries and he likes sexy time
he is very loyal to those he cares about. if he were to take the pottermore quiz, slytherin would be his first house, but gryffindor would be a close second.
he loves a good party!
sometimes, he feels as though he’s not good enough for most people and places. he pushes himself to belong and make people happy, which in turn makes him more unhappy. it’s a vicious cycle he’s working hard to overcome. honestly, he just hasn’t let go of his teenage angst. someone help him :\
while he is a flirt, he also cares/loves very deeply.
misc
since he doesn’t play quidditch anymore, but still likes to keep in shape, he likes to run (he has his own route he uses every morning) and he likes to box. his knuckles are always a little battered from the punching bag.
his favorite color is midnight blue.
he knows how to play piano and the violin, courtesy of his grandmother, who insisted that he had a musical skill when he was a child
his favorite class at hogwarts was charms
he has an owl named ares, a black-banded owl he got when he was eleven
he is pretty neutral about the death eaters/order of the phoenix situation, but he leans more toward the latter because of his blood status, and has been treated poorly by purebloods both in the past and presently
possible connections
i’m down for any and all connections you guys can think of, but here are a few that might get the ball rolling :)
former fwbs/current fwbs
best friends
casual acquaintances
frenemies/enemies
workout buddies (either running or boxing)
former classmates
really anything you can come up with, i’m pretty down for :)
