1979 Music Man StingRay Leo Fender refuse to rest on his laurels after selling Fender Musical Instruments CBS in 1965, and he went to work on the Music Man StingRay shortly after his CBS consulting contract ran out. The new bass was design to do everything the original Fender bass did - only better. This ash -or alder-body instrument with a bolt-on maple neck was first marketed in 1976, and the early models had strings that passed through the body - a feature found on P-Basses made between 1951 and ’57. (The string-through design was abandoned when the Ernie Ball company took over Music Man production in the early ’80’s.) The StingRay’s 3+1 peghead took some getting used to, but the ballsy sound produced by its massive single pickup and active circuitry quickly became popular. Although the StingRay was critiqued by some for having only one tone, it was very good at doing what it did. In his funky fretwork with the Brothers Johnson, Louis Johnson proved the StingRay was a powerful vehicle for the thumbstyle bass. Queen’s John Deacon took a more melodic approach to his Music Man, and Pino Palladino’s superb work on a fretless StingRay has shown another side of the instrument’s up-front tone. “Up-front” doesn’t begin to describe what Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers did for years with his StingRay - or to it!
