PHASE 1 TASK 1
Similar to many small towns that have seen their golden age come and go, Bad Meinberg in north-central Germany is an exoskeleton of a booming town; abandoned hotels and shops still stand years after the crowds that filled them have departed. Once hosting working-class visitors that came to take in the natural wellness and rehabilitation offered in Bad Meinburg, The proposed site is an unparalleled opportunity to bring modern activity into a community than cannot shake the faded past. The central location and surrounding businesses support public visibility and ease of access that promote the site as a natural heart of Bad Meinberg’s day-to-day.  Locals have expressed the desire for a congregational and entertainment spaces to gather and invigorate the often quiet former resort town. Architecturally, the site is bursting with possibilities to take full advantage of the space and location while remaining in character with the rest of the community.  The site includes a large abandoned hotel building that occupies the busiest corner of the lot, facing both the main street of Bad Meinberg and a grassy oak grove. The building is of an appropriate size to be reused, minimizing wasteful demolition and construction. A large parking lot covers a large portion of the lot, providing a clean slate for additional usable space.  Reusing existing structures, in addition with modern additional construction that uses responsibly sourced materials, exemplify a sustainable way of redeveloping Bad Meinberg while also honoring its traditional partnership with natural resources and healthy, wellness-focused design.
