My 9yo son Leo, my first baby. Leo is incredibly bright and has a head for facts and figures, and he loves sport. AFL and NBA especially. He and I are quite similar in a lot of ways, and we clash now and then. But we always talk about it and usually come to understand each other... usually! Leo’s the one of my kids that challenges me the most in terms of making me consider the best way to help him grow and learn; he needs more thought and different approaches to the other two. I love him with all my heart and I’ll never forget the half hour we had together, just us two, after he was born. He was an emergency caesarean and while his mother was being stitched up and recovering, we had time for cuddles and a chat. I promised him I’d always be around and always have his back. A genetic gift from someone back up the line, I have a partially-hollow S1 vertebra. Not a lottery you want to win! About four or five years ago, 30-odd years of wear and tear saw that vertebra partially dislodge, and give a little under the weight of the rest of my spine. As a result, the L5 vertebra above it crunched down and caused the disc between L5-S1 to bulge, and compress my sciatic nerve. Sciatica, as it’s known, is the pinching of the sciatic nerve and causes pain, numbness and inflammation right through the hips, buttocks and legs. For me, it means I can’t walk more than 10-15 minutes without needing to sit down and allow the nerve to ‘wake up’ so my leg doesn’t feel numb or hurt anymore. Needless to say, it ain’t much fun. I’ve had cortisone injections, seen a neurosurgeon and my GP. The recommendation is that I have surgery to insert a small brace to keep the two vertebra concerned in place and prevent the disc from bulging. But I would prefer to avoid surgery if I can. I’ve heard and read stories of it not working and the pain either continuing or worsening. So I’ve again sought alternatives to this. A pain management & physiotherapy specialist has helped me put together a stretching and exercise program to strengthen the muscles in my lower back and core, to try and naturally correct things. Additionally, a few times each day, I use this inversion table to relax and stretch my spine. It’s a good few minutes of gravity and my body weight combining to do a bit extra. Starting each day with a spinal and muscular stretch like this, as well as using a gym ball and the floor, are hopefully helping my back to reposition/reprogram itself. The last few days have been really tough. My headspace hasn’t been great and even though I’m trying to stay focussed and positive, it’s been quite difficult. Partly it’s the post-kids comedown, which after a week with them is to be expected. I haven’t been sleeping well and that’s a fundamental need for me (and most). I’m trying to sort out a few big things that just don’t seem to end. I’m behind in life admin and have so many emails and calls to return, but can’t make a dent in them. I haven’t been journaling because my concentration is shot. I’m trying to get over someone I have very strong feelings for, but it didn’t work out. Yesterday I started a ‘stocktake’ of all the things that are really challenging me, and I had to stop because it became overwhelming. But I’ll pick it up again today and make some more progress, however small. I’m hanging in there and not beating myself up. I know I’ll emerge again soon. It’s just the way it is for me at the moment. Every day is another opportunity to try and move forward in whatever way I can. I know that and am my own proof of this. I am enough 👍🏻
