Your exhaustion is not shameful. It is not a moral failure to be physically, mentally or emotionally tired. It is okay to be overwhelmed. You're not inferior to anyone just because it's hard for you to keep up with a fast-paced life.

How could we have known how much worse it would be 4 years ago? There were warnings last year that no one took seriously. And now we’re going to pay severely. One human should not be able to cause this much damage. He can’t legally. But he’s not being stopped by the checks we have to protect us.

Millions of people voted for him. Millions more did not. Billions of people are affected.

Every person who enabled him deserves to be tried and in jail for it. Every influencer who lied to large audiences on his behalf, or who were paid to lie. Government officials who stood by and just let him run rampant. The Supreme Court who waved the constitution and justice to favor him and their political agendas. Everyone who failed to act on a sworn duty to get us here is at fault.

Cw: chronic illness, weight loss, poop but not graphic descriptions of such. Also this whole thing is written as if I am a fantasy protagonist because that is how I cope.

So, as some of you know, I was gifted by whatever gods or demons with the digestive fortitude of a particularly nervous horse. My bowels often produce liquid, or refuse to pass anything at all, for days on end. Sometimes, if I have not been able to make an offering of my bodily waste upon the porcelain altar in three or more days, I use a potion from the local apothecary known as a Fleet. [The little glycerin ones, I'm not insane.] These little remedies are well named, for if you are not near a latrine when you use one, you - well, you're a very odd fool, but a fool who will become as swift as the wind to reach one. I do this because if I wait until Crohn- the vengeful god of intestinal motility, not to be confused with his cousin Kronos- finally remembers I exist or stops remembering I exist, it will be hell on this earth.

Today was one such day. Today was also a weekly weigh day, because if the alchemist's potions [my meds] start causing my once-lush form to become wraithlike [clinically underweight], I need to know. If this happens, I will have to go to the local witch-priestess [my doctor], and beg them to intercede with Crohn on my behalf. They will work with the alchemist to bargain in my name using the arcane ways [medicine dosage adjustments] for me to continue to not be subject to the full weight of Crohn's wrath, as that is what the alchemist's concoction protects against in addition to other maladies, and not perish as the cost. I am not, of course, one of Crohn's chosen, but I receive his attentions rather more than most mortals.

So I weigh myself this morning. I go about my usual morning routine, administer the Fleet, and then after I have made an offering of my body's waste upon the porcelain altar, I think, "Jesus fucking Christ that has to be one of the largest, densest shits I have ever produced in my life", and go wash my hands. As I am washing them, I realize there is a scale there.

...

"Why not?" says my treacherous brain.

I weigh myself again.

...I do not jest with you when I say that the matter I expelled from my innards weighed a pound and a half. Probably more because I chugged a protein shake between the first and second weight assessments.

A thing that has been helpful for me is realizing that Temperance shares a root with the verb "to temper" as in "to temper steel", and that Temperance is not masochistic denial of pleasure, but instead taking the time to develop the wherewithal to go "well what the fuck am I gonna do with this?" You can temper eggs into a nice omelette, or lemons into lemonade.

You can temper emotions into something useful that, if it can't make you happy, at least doesn't hurt as much. Anger, for instance, can be tempered into compassion. You're angry at the current administration's fuckery? Why? Probably because you, and everyone else, does not deserve this shit. In fact, it'd be great to go stop that shit, and prevent it from happening again, because you have compassion for yourself and others, and therefore do not want this shit to happen tonthem. Boom. Hammer out the impurities of self-righteousness and learned helplessness and turn that anger into a tempered steel tool to go fix things.

This goes for all of them. Anger tempers into compassion, disgust into respect, fear into knowledge, surprise into curiosity, joy into peace, and sadness into love. Temperance is a virtue, but the virtue is in using that big human brain of yours to work with what you have instead of just flinging the shit you're in around like an ape.

It's helpful for me to see Temperance as agency in that I remember that I always do have at least an inch of agency inside my own head that nobody can ever take from me, and the remember that the false Temperance of unthinking denial serves no purpose save as an excuse to get out of the work of improving myself.

LGBT activists have been vocal about intersex issues for several decades, because establishing the legal right to bodily autonomy for intersex persons is basically inseparable from establishing the right of trans persons to that same legal autonomy over their own bodies. many intersex persons prefer not to be grouped together with LGBT causes; however, the vast majority of LGBT activists would agree that performing “corrective” surgery on intersex infants - to force them to adhere to a largely fictional gender binary - is pretty fucking evil.
