Jake snorted, “Jakey?” He wasn’t sure what he’d expected, but it hadn’t been that. “What kind of name is that?” He said scrunching up his nose. “Sounds kind of creepy. Sure it’s lovely though.” He smiled, laughing a bit.

Jake looked at her and gave her a small smile. "Having company is favour enough, gets awful lonely up here." He shrugged. Normally he'd be sarcastic and make a few jokes, but he didn't really feel himself. Being alone had given him a lot of time to think about the past, think about before all this happened.

"Wouldn't want my toenails painted even if it weren't pink." Jake shrugged, "I'm not much of a reader either, tell you the truth, I find it hard to read. Never did well in school, never bothered learning afterwards either." He didn't know why he was admitting this to her, though it wasn't important anymore. Nothing was except surviving. He wrapped the bandage around her ankle, apologising when he thought he'd hurt her, tying it off at the ends. "Sorry it isn't too neat. I'm not a doctor."

“Jake,” he greeted, smirking slightly at her little speech. “Guess I should answer the routine questions too, I’m alone, I’m not infected, Not really that hungry and only slightly tired.” He shrugged. “Got some food and a bed if you want it.” He opened the fire escape and let her in before closing it behind himself and shutting the door, shoving a chair under the handle so nothing could get in. “Listen lady, I don’t expect you to repay me, I can look out for myself. Have been since this whole thing started. I mean, you’re more than welcome to stay, but you don’t owe me nothing.” He shrugged, leading her into a room and helping her into a chair. “I ain’t got no ice, but I can get a bandage for your ankle.” He said as he rummaged through the first aid kit, throwing her an energy bar as he did so.
