When It All Falls Apart - Chapter 15
Pairing- ex!Jensen x Padalecki Reader
Word count- 5,053
Warnings- Possible language. Frustrated Reader
A/N-Sorry this has been so long, I just don't get the time I used to have to write. I was trying to keep up my tradition of giving you a fic on my birthday, it's just a little later in the evening than usual.
A little off canon, SPN ended after 10 years. We still got all the characters in during that time though. Thank you @leigh70 for your help with this. You are amazing!!
Summary-Y/N Padalecki loved acting on Supernatural. Working alongside your older brother and your boyfriend, but after ten seasons the guys have chosen to hang up the guns. Now the three of you are moving on to other projects, but that’s all that needs to change right? While you have moved to Austin to be closer to your family and boyfriend, Jensen is working elsewhere. Distance is only the start of your troubles.
Series Masterlist
While you are waiting at the Airport for your 6:20 flight to Colorado, you receive a text from Keegan.
Toby C-Colby and Lindsey are going to Bat Fest with me. Would you prefer we sent you pictures or videos of the evening? ;)
Shaking your head at his message, you send your reply.
Me-That’s alright, I think I’ll pass on both. I appreciate the offer though.
Toby C- Are you sure? Seems like something you would really enjoy.
Me- I’m positive. Hope you all have fun!
Toby C- Have fun at your convention!
A short time later they are calling your flight to line up for boarding. Grabbing your bags you hop in line, getting your boarding pass ready to be scanned.
It was an uneventful flight, and thankfully not too full. The Denver airport itself, was another story. It took you a while to get through to the pickup area where you finally saw Mike waiting for you.
“Hey Mike,”
“Y/N, hi. How was your flight?”
“It was good, thanks.”
He takes your bag as he leads you to the car. The ride to the Embassy Suites takes about twenty minutes with light traffic. After grabbing your bags out and handing over your room key, Mike has to leave again for the conference center to pick up Kim and Bri from the pajama party.
Judging by the room number on the card, you figure you’re on the fifth floor. Walking down the long entryway and passing through the atrium you find the elevators to take you upstairs. Shooting a text off to Kim and Bri, telling them you were here and headed for the pool before ordering some food. If they want to join you in any of that they are more than welcome to.
Quickly changing into your suit, you make your way to the pool, happy to see there are only a couple of guys in the hot tub. Smiling and nodding as you walk by, you claim a chair for your things, and ditch your coverup before getting in the pool. About twelve laps in you run into someone’s foot as you near the wall.
Quickly stopping and looking up, you see Kim and Bri sitting at the pool edge laughing at you.
“You scared the crap out of me. I was like, how did I manage to get off the line I was going in.”
“I don’t see any crap floating in the pool,” Bri mouths off before cracking up.
“You were pretty into your swim, and didn’t notice when we called your name, so I thought I’d give this a try,” Kim tells you.
“Yeah, you two haven’t had anything to drink tonight have you?” They just laugh. Sinking back into the water you roll out your shoulders before speaking again. “Are you planning on getting in or just kicking me?”
“Neither of us brought suits this time. But we figured we’d come see if you were ready to get food yet,” Kim responds.
“Yeah, sure. What are you in the mood for?”
“I think the bar or restaurant by the atrium is open for a while. Let’s just get something there,” she suggests.
“Okay. I need to change. Are you two going in your party pj’s or changing.”
Bri opts to stay in her outfit, Kim goes back for a sweatshirt, and they agree to meet you back downstairs.
With a quick shower to wash out the chlorine, you throw on some comfy sweats and leave your room. Your two friends are already there, joined by Jason, Adam, David and DJ.
“‘Bout time you showed up. We’ve been waiting for bloody ever,” Adam teases you.
“Oh shut it.” Hugging your friends, you make your way to the empty seat between Bri and Adam.
After ordering, DJ asks Bri about her recent trip. Then others throw out what they have been up to. When it’s your turn, you tell them you moved to a new place. Of course the girls want to see pictures. You don’t miss the confused look they send each other as they look through your pictures.
“Where’s it at?” Kim asks.
“Is this it?” comes from Bri.
Ignoring Bri, you respond to Kim, “It’s near Congress Ave, not too long of a drive from Jared and Gen’s house.”
“It’s, um it’s quaint,” Kim finally responds.
“No, it’s a closet. Seriously girl, what were you thinking here?” Bri pushes. By now the guys have all seen the photos on your phone.
“I was thinking they offer short term rent options until I can figure out what I want to do.”
“You couldn’t do that at the moose’s house?”
“I needed space.”
Bri looks you over before she finally relents. She can tell there is more you aren’t saying yet. Your friends mean well, even if they don’t always have the politest way of putting it. The rest of the evening is spent joking around before you all retire to your rooms.
Friday’s alarm pulls you from sleep, slowly dragging yourself out of bed, you get yourself ready for the day. While finishing up with makeup a text comes from Mike letting you know he’s on his way, and someone picked up breakfast and it will be at the convention center. Once done, you grab your backpack with your things for the day and make your way to the lobby.
Adam, Jason, and Sam are already downstairs, when Mike pulls up at 9, the four of you head outside. A few minutes later DJ comes racing out to join you. It’s a quiet ride to the convention center, you all are dropped off at a side door where no one will see you.
You recognize three of the handlers waiting just outside the door, all with coffees in their hands, but you don’t see Chelsea. They all greet you, but you realize each of them is assigned to one of your friends. You ask Nikki who is working with Sam, where you can find Chelsea.
“Sorry Y/N, she’s sick this weekend. My mic isn’t working, I have to get a new one once I get Sam to her room. I’m not sure who you are working with, I’ll find out and send them to meet you. There is a small green room area backstage, but you all have individual rooms to hang out in, and relax at this location. There are also some breakfast rolls there. If you want to walk with us, I’ll see if your room number is on any of these sheets I have.”
The handle and Sam make small talk as you follow them down the hallway. Once Nikki gets Sam settled in her room, she takes you further down the hall to what she says is your assigned room. Before she leaves, she promises to send someone your way soon since your VIP meet and greet is scheduled at 9:55.
You don’t want to eat right before your VIP meeting, so you opt to stay in the room for now. With a little bit of time to kill you pull out your laptop. Scrolling through your Hulu account you swipe past a show before going back. Laughing you hit play on the first episode. As the theme song sequence is playing you snap a picture at the end and send it to Keegan.
Me- Hey look what I found to rewatch!
It only takes him a few minutes to respond.
Toby C- Seriously?? Isn’t there something else on there to keep you entertained?
Toby C- I thought you were at a convention? Shouldn’t you be signing autographs or taking pictures or something?
Me- Got a secret, can you keep it? Two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.
Toby C- I may have to block you.
Me- You aren’t in the first episode. When do you appear again?
Toby C- Sorry, this user is busy and cannot respond while we are on this topic.
Me- Jerk
It’s then that you notice the time on your phone says 10:10. Didn’t Nikki say you had a 9:55 M&G?
Me- Sorry Toby, I need to go
Toby C- The name is KEEGAN!!
One of the handlers never did come to get you, did your schedule change? Grabbing your phone you head to the door and down to the room Nikki pointed out that would be used as the green room. Adam was in there, and just about to walk out on stage to start the convention. His handler was sitting at a table nearby, you go up to see if she can help you.
“Hi, sorry to bother you, I’m just trying to figure out where I am supposed to be. I thought Nikki said I had a 9:55 meet and greet?” You ask the woman in front of you.
“Hello Y/N,” she pulls up her schedule, “yes, you were scheduled for one at 9:55. But Victoria radioed that she couldn’t find you. They moved Jason’s into that spot.”
“I’ve been in the room Nikki showed me to the entire time. I just left it to come down here when I noticed the time.”
She nods before taking into her radio. “This is Steph for Victoria. Y/N Padalecki is in the green room now. Do you have an update on her schedule?”
It takes a minute before you hear noise coming over the radio. While you wait for her to get back to you, DJ is running through the room and out the ramp to the stage, his handler going out the side door to watch his panel from inside the room if he needed anything.
“Okay, I will pass that on. Thank you,” Steph responds to the radio.
By now Adam is back and coming over to see what is going on. Steph turns to the two of you. “Victoria said to tell you to wait here. She will come get you for your pictures at 11, they moved your VIP meet and greet to 2.”
“Does that mean Victoria is working with me this weekend?”
“Yes.”
You groan internally, but put on a smile before replying, “okay, thank you.”
Adam pulls you aside before asking, “what’s happening?”
“I was waiting in the room Nikki showed me to because no one met me when we got here. She said I had a 9:55 meet and greet, but no one ever came and got me. Your handler said she told them that she couldn’t find me. So they had to move stuff around.”
Adam shakes his head, “little Padalecki causing trouble already.”
“Hey, I was just doing what I was told,” you defend yourself.
“Likely excuse, I have pictures to get to. Unlike you, I don’t plan on skipping out.”
“Ha ha, you’re a riot this morning,” you call out to his back as Adam and his handler leave.
Now, you have a half an hour to kill in the empty green room. Looking around you notice all the breakfast rolls are gone, you’ll just have to wait for lunch. But you would definitely kill for an energy drink. With no one else around yet, you pull out your phone and return to your previous streaming. Keegan is in the second episode and the end of it comes before you check the time, so you know when to go freshen up for photos.
“11:12? What the hell?” you exclaim to the empty room. Didn’t Steph tell you Victoria was coming and photos were at 11?
Looking around the unoccupied room you search for a schedule, but there doesn’t seem to be one. You can hear DJ still up on stage, and decide to peek in the hallway to see if anyone is around to help you. Sam is at her table doing photos and autographs, with Nikki sitting next to her. Looking around you don’t see anyone else nearby, so you make your way over to the ladies. Some of the fans recognize you and you smile and say hello as you pass. Nikki notices you and quickly comes over. She leads you back to Sam’s table so she can be near if Sam needs anything.
“Sorry to interrupt you guys, but I’m trying to figure out my schedule. I was told to wait in the green room until photos at 11, but now it’s after that. Do you know if they are running behind?”
Nikki looks slightly nervous before telling you, “I heard on the radio that you were unable to make photos, so they took Bri as soon as she got here. I’m not sure when they moved yours to.”
“What!” you exclaim before getting control of yourself in front of the fans. “I haven’t seen Victoria yet today, I’ve been in the green room waiting since I was told she was coming for me.”
“I’m so sorry, Y/N.” Nikki tries to placate you. “If you want to go back to the green room, or your room, I will message Victoria and have her come right there.”
“It’s not your fault. I’ll go back to the green room, if she’ll meet me there. Thanks, Nikki.”
“No problem.” She starts talking to her mike as she walks you back toward the door while still watching Sam. “Victoria will be right over,” Nikki tells you before walking away.
Shutting the door behind you, you let out a frustrated sigh.
“Long day already?” A voice behind you makes you jump.
“DJ! You scared me, I didn’t realize you were in here.”
“I just came off stage, where are you coming from?”
“Trying to find a handler.”
“What?”
“I have yet to see my handler for the weekend, so I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do. I guess I’ve already missed two things.”
“Goodness girl! It’s not even noon and you are already causing chaos.”
“Hey, it’s not my fault!,” you try to defend yourself.
Before either of you can say more, his handle is calling to him. “DJ, it’s time to head out to your table in the vendor’s room.”
“Be right there, thanks. Sorry Little Pad, unlike you. I have to get somewhere.” He was quickly out the door leaving you alone once again.
Falling down on one of the chairs, you don’t even take your phone out to entertain yourself. With what has already happened this morning you want to be aware of what is going on around you. Listening to the main stage you can tell Adam and David are currently out there. You have a few laughs at the guys' stories, before one of the doors opens and Victoria finally walks in.
“I see you finally decided to stay in one place,” she snottily greets you.
Oh, you are not going to roll over for her right now. “Really? I’ve been where I was told to be all morning. Where have you been?”
“I’ve been dealing with your absence and changing schedules. We need to get down to group photos now. You better be ready.”
Biting your tongue, you follow her out of the door leading to the hallway. That takes you to a back staircase leading downstairs. Through there you follow another hallway until you come to one of the closed doors. Victoria knocks on it before leading you in. Entering the room you see a line of waiting fans that Kim and Bri are joking with.
“Oh look who finally came to join us!” Kim calls out.
“Guess she just wanted to make an entrance,” Bri quips.
Shaking your head, you join the girls in front of the picture background. “Good to finally see you, Padalecki,” Chris calls, picking up his camera.
“You are all hilarious.”
“Well we had to keep it interesting waiting for you. We were only supposed to start ten minutes ago,” Bri informs you.
“Apparently, you needed more time to freshen up,” Kim chips in.
The first fan is coming over before you get a chance to defend yourself. Putting on a smile you try not to let your frustrations show in the photos. None of the fans need your sour mood ruining the pictures they are paying for. After fifteen minutes your session with the ladies ends, and they head out, but Chris keeps you behind. Apparently, some of your solo photos have been moved to now. Looking around you don’t see Victoria anywhere, and you could really use a bottle of water. Everyone else in the room is busy and you don’t want to bother them, it seems like you have already put them out enough today.
Twenty minutes later you are done with this round of solo pictures, and you notice Victoria has reappeared. Giving Chris a hug and apologizing for being late, you follow your handler out the door. I
“What is my schedule for the rest of the day?” you question. Thinking it will be a good idea to know what you have going on and when you need to be somewhere.
She leads you back upstairs to another room before she bothers to speak to you. “This is your room, you can wait in here until I come get you for your ops.” With that she turns to leave.
“Two things before you leave. I was in a different room this morning, and my things are in there. I asked what I had going on the rest of the day, you never answered me.”
She rolls her eyes as she turns back to look at you, “you can go get your things and bring them back here. Just don’t take off somewhere else again, you’ve caused enough headache today. You have a VIP meet and greet now at 2:15, a panel at 2:50, autographs at 4:15.”
“Could I get a copy of the weekend schedule?”
“The printed copies are wrong now since you were missing this morning.”
“I wasn’t missing.”
“That’s right, don’t accept blame for your mistakes.”
The two of you glare at each other before she turns to leave again.
“What about lunch? And I would like a bottle of water please.”
“Lunch will be delivered later.”
Bitch, you think as the door clicks behind her, you wonder if the hotel gym has a punching bag. You could definitely use one tonight. Taking a deep breath you leave the room to gather your things and come back here. Inside the other room you find some of your pictures you assume are supposed to be signed, some permanent markers, and also see a few waters. Grabbing it all you head back to the room Victoria showed you too.
Rolling your shoulders you sit down to start signing, music is quietly playing on your phone. After about half an hour you need to get up and stretch. A rumbling from your stomach has you checking your phone, you notice it’s a little after one, that means lunch should be here anytime. One o'clock usually starts an intermission time.
Opening the door out to the hallway, you don’t see anyone else moving around. Going back into the room you turn on the next episode of PLL to kill some time. Getting caught up in the episode it’s quarter to two, before you realize your dear handler never came to tell you lunch was in. Closing your computer you make your way down the hall to the green room area. Most of your friends are sitting inside, and call out greetings to you.
“Look who decided to grace us with her presence,” Kim teases.
“Hey princess, where have you been hiding?” Bri asks
“Miss any more ops?” Adam questions.
“What’s up girl?” from DJ.
Sam, Jason, and the guys from Louden Swain just laugh. The handlers that are around the room trying to hide their smiles.
“You guys are hilarious, and I’ll laugh in a minute. Right now I’m too hungry to participate.”
As you walk toward the boxes that contain lunch, you miss your friends looking at each other. Opening the first two white boxes you find them empty. The third has half of a veggie sub left in it. The fourth box is also empty, there are a few bags of chips and some apples at the end of the table.
Bri speaks up from the couches, “when they took the lunch order, Victoria said you didn’t want anything…”
Grabbing a bag of chips and an apple, you turn back around. “All that was said to me about lunch when I asked, was it will be delivered later.” There are a few pops sitting on the table and you grab one of those too, it will at least get you a little caffeine.
Checking your watch, it’s almost two. “Ok, well I have a meet and greet shortly, so I need to get back to the room Victoria told me to stay in. See you all later.”
Taking your little lunch back to your room, you quickly eat it so you can then freshen up before your M&G when Victoria comes back. Five minutes after two you are standing in the hallway ready for your handler to appear. When she finally shows up five minutes later, you tell her you need to make a quick stop at the restroom first, since no one bothered to tell you where they were earlier.
Rolling her eyes, Victoria leads you down and around a corner where the restrooms are. “You need to hurry up, you’re already running late.”
“If I am, it’s on you. I was ready and waiting for you,” you snap back.
You get through the 10 minute VIP M&G without any problems. Although you don’t usually get any from those. It’s just after 2:30 when you get back to your room upstairs, Victoria tells you to be sure to be ready for the panel that starts at 2:50.
Shutting the door on her you mumble, “yeah, yeah.” Looking around the room, you search for anything else that needs to be signed. You usually have more than the stack of pictures you autographed earlier. Speaking of which, those are still sitting in here, it’s doubtful your super helpful handle will actually do her job and turn them in for you, so you decide to take them back to the greenroom yourself when you go for the panel. It’s 2:45 when you decide to walk down to the greenroom yourself. You don’t need Victoria to show you where the stage is from there, you can go on with the girls. Walking into the room, you just see Adam and the band in there.
“Bri and Kim aren’t here yet?” you ask.
“Aw look who’s late again” Adam greets you with.
“What are you talking about?” Glancing at your watch, “I still have three minutes before we go on stage.”
“No love, you were supposed to be on seven minutes ago.”
“What! That’s not what I was told. Where’s a mike?” you ask looking around.
Billy gives you a mike and you hand your pictures to Adam before heading out to stage. Kim and Bri hear you coming and turn to face you as you come out the curtain.
“Hey!! Look who we have here.” Bri exclaims to the crowd.
“So nice of you to join the party,” Kim chimes in.
“Sorry everyone, I guess I got a little lost,” you try to joke.
The panel goes by fine for the most part, Kim and Bri might give you a little more crap than they normally would, but you let it go. Since it does appear you’ve been late for just about everything today, even if it wasn’t your fault.
Adam and Louden Swain come out at the end to sing you off stage, and then welcome the last panel on. As you walk through the curtain Bri puts her arm around your shoulder.
“What’s up with you today?”
“It’s not my fault.”
“Okay, do you wanna talk about it?”
You notice Victoria standing nearby with her arms crossed, “not right now, I just would like this day to be over.”
Your lovely handler decides to make her way over, “you weren’t in your room when Steph went to get you, so you were late again.” Bri and Kim don't want to get in the way, and they step away.
“I was right where I was supposed to be, until I brought myself down here. By the time I did that, I was apparently already late. You gave me the wrong time.”
“No, I didn’t. You must not have been paying attention.”
“I’m not in the mood Victoria, just go leave me alone.”
“Where do you think you are going to disappear to before autographs this time?”
“I’m not going anywhere. They are what, forty minutes away? I’ll just stay here.”
“Whatever,” she huffs out before walking away from you.
Sam and Gil are up on stage now, so you sit down and listen to them while you wait to go out for autographs after the stage panels are done for the day. As their panel winds down you wonder if Victoria will reappear to go out to autographs with you or not. She does, just before you need to go out there. Great, you get to sit next to her for the next hour or so, fun times, you think.
You’re right, she definitely makes this a miserable experience. You wonder how Jensen handles having to deal with her at most every con. She must be a heck of a lot nicer to him. She makes a few snide comments to your fans, most digs at their compliments of you. Tries to hurry you along when you want to say something to them. You finally tell her to chill out. She doesn’t speak to you for the rest of the session, just to the fans approaching.
Back in the green room, Bri, Kim, Gil, Adam and David are returning. The rest of the group already went back to the hotel.
“What are the plans for the evening?” Bri wants to know.
“Karaoke starts at nine, we need to be back here by say, 8:45?” Adam responds.
“So let’s clean up and grab dinner at say 6:30?” Kim suggests.
The others agree and Adam sends out a group text. Bri turns to you, “Should we tell you 6:15 so you’re on time?”
“You’re hilarious. I think I’m just going to hang out at the hotel until Karaoke.”
“What why?” She wants to know.
“It’s been a long day, I just need a break.”
“While you’re no fun.”
It’s announced that Mike is back and ready for you all, which saves you from responding. They all talk about the day, and give you a hard time on the way back to the hotel. As you get out, Kim reminds everyone of the plan. Bri tells them you aren’t coming.
“Just make sure you are heading back to the convention for Karaoke by 8:30 then,” Adam tells you.
“Yeah, yeah, see you all later.”
Before heading back to your room, you check out the fitness center, but nothing there seems to be what you are looking for to help relieve your stress. Deciding to hit the pool for some laps instead, you go back to change into your suit.
Back at the pool, you stretch then enter the water and begin swimming laps. You keep going until your arms start to tire, then spend a few minutes carefully gliding through the water before getting out. Grabbing a towel, you flop down in one of the lounge chairs. Making sure your hands are dry, you pull your phone out of your bag to check the time. It’s 6:45, you have plenty of time to grab some food somewhere and get ready for karaoke
Up in your room you turn on the television for some background noise, and decide to order a sandwich from room service. While waiting you hop in the shower, then relax until your dinner arrives.
By 8:20 you are in the lobby waiting for your cab back to the convention center. The door is locked so you hang out around the back entrance until someone else comes along. Thankfully, your loud friends arrive ten minutes later, and some of the handlers come down and unlock the doors for you all. You can tell they had fun at dinner and the party continues on in the green room as Bri pours shots for everyone. You’re tempted to drink the day away, but the sight of Victoria walking in stops you. After today’s mess, you want to be able to remember tonight and fully function tomorrow in case she tries to pull anything else.
Karaoke goes off without any problems. You avoid your handler at all costs and try to focus on the fans and your friends around you. After the last song, another round of drinks are passed around backstage. You drink slowly waiting for the announcement that Mike was there to take you back. As soon as you heard he was, you were one of the first downstairs ready to sleep this disastrous day away.
Waking up Saturday morning, you had a game plan in mind. If you stayed in the green room area all day, no one could give you any shit about screwing anything up.
When your alarm went off Saturday morning, you didn’t delay getting out of bed. Quickly going through your morning routine, and then packing up all of your things. With a final look around the room you take your bags and head to the lobby determined to be down there before you even get the text that Mike has arrived.
Looking around you spot the Starbucks and decide to grab your own breakfast. You aren’t taking any chances this morning. Thankfully they still have some of your favorite pastries in stock. Taking two, one for now and one for later, you also order a Frappuccino to help get you through another day with Victoria. The text from Mike comes through as you walk away. Heading toward his SUV, you take a deep breath to help prepare yourself for the day ahead.
Thank you for reading!!

If you don't like it, don't read it. You don't need to give the person putting their own free time and energy into FREE writing any trouble because you don't like the picture used. When you go to a bookstore do you do the same thing?
Things like this, are what's going to push writers to stop sharing their stories, or to stop writing.
Nope. I will not read anything you post while you insist upon filling your fic banners with white women to represent a "reader" character. And I know I'm not the only one.
I understand and I support your choice. Everyone has free will to read only what they want to read.
I will say one thing, which is that you can do everything "right" and someone will find a flaw in your work. I am a real person and I do my best. For reference, I am half asian. I grew up in an area where I was the only non-entirely white friend up until I went to college. I've experienced racism in person. I don't wish that on anyone.
But reader insert fics are incredibly difficult to write. You have to remember things like not everyone blushes, or maybe you're assuming someone has full hearing. There are assumptions made. And there should be grace from readers for the writers who put out these stories for free.
If you don't like my stuff so much, just block me, I'm totally fine if that's what makes you happy and makes your day better.

Summary- You almost lost Dean to a heart attack, now after one phone call there is another threat from the past that could come between you two.
A/N-I know this isn't one of my ongoing series, but this has been in my drafts for years. The first 2 parts are a rewrite of the Route 66 episode. I'm trying to get back into writing, I promise. If you would like to be removed or added to the tag list let me know. Not Beta'd, all mistakes are mine
After another rough night on the couch, Sam wakes you, telling you you need to hurry. A quick look around told you Dean never made it back last night. Apparently the mayor was killed the night before on property he bought a few weeks ago. This changes up the truck’s pattern. You hurry to get ready, while Sam calls Dean to tell him the two of you will meet him there. You arrive at the crime scene before Dean, and go over to talk to the police. Every bone in the mayor's body was crushed, internal organs turned to pudding, and the cops? No idea, it was like the guy was run over, but again no tracks. Both of you immediately think of the truck.
When Dean finally walks up to join you, Sam holds up a badge and tells another cop he was with the two of you. You back away from the guys as Dean moves over to talk to Sam. You hear Sam ask where he was last night, since he didn’t make it back to the hotel, and did they work things out between them? Specifically the obvious tension.
“Wait, you actually slept with her?” Oops, you didn’t mean for that to actually be said out loud.
Dean turns to glare at you. “Yeah, I actually did. It was pretty great too. Best night I’ve had in a very long while.”
You turn away from them trying to hold back the tears as you walk back to Impala. This shouldn’t hurt like it does. As hard as it was to believe, but for once in your life, you can’t wait to have some distance between you and Dean.
The guys are talking as they walk back toward you. Dean saying they need to figure out why the ghost truck broke the pattern and how it all fits together. You just roll your eyes.
“It’s obvious, jackass. It all comes back to Cassie’s family. Which, by the way, you were supposed to figure out the why last night. Let me guess, you were too busy to do your job.” With that you yank open the Impala’s door, getting in and slamming it behind you.
Dean sends you a nasty look through the windshield and heads toward his door. Sam grabs his arm and pulls him away first, the two talking for a few minutes, occasionally one of them will look back at you. You turn to face out the side window ignoring them, and close your eyes for good measure, so you won’t have to see him either. Then you try and work on calming yourself down.
Apparently, the guys decide to split up during their talk. Sam is going to look up courthouse records of who had owned the property, and you are going with Dean to the newspaper office. When you try to get out at the courthouse Dean won’t let you, saying you were coming with him. No one checked if this was alright with you.
At the office, Cassie makes tea for herself and Dean, sitting down extremely close to him, while he explains to her what you are busy looking up. So this is why you were with him, to do the research. The bitch hasn’t even caught on to the fact Dean hates tea. She obviously really cares about him, at least Dean is behind you and isn’t able to see your eye roll this time. Dean hasn’t even noticed or doesn’t care you are no longer speaking to him, too wrapped up in Cassie.
“We are trying to find a link between the killings in the ‘60’s and the ones going on now. There wasn’t much in the paper,” he begins explaining.
“That’s not a surprise,” you hear her respond. “The police probably didn’t do much work on them either. Back then there wasn’t much equal justice under the law around here.”
“That’s Sam,” Dean says, picking up his ringing phone and putting it on speaker. “Yeah.”
“The courthouse records show the Mayor and his wife bought an abandoned property. The last owner was the Dorian family who had it for like 150 years.”
“Wait, did you say Dorian?” you question.
“Yeah.”
You start looking up the Dorian family, when Dean asks Cassie if they were the ones who used to own the paper. She tells him they did, along with most of the other businesses and buildings around town. You open a link on the computer as Dean looks over your shoulder then pushes your chair away. You just glare at the back of him from where you and your chair stop rolling.
“That’s interesting,” he says after reading for a minute.
“What?” Sam, still on speakerphone, wants to know.
“There was a Cyrus Dorian, who vanished in April of ‘63. They investigated the disappearance but never solved the case. Round the same time as the murders were happening back then.”
“I pulled up a bunch of info on the Dorian place. It musta been in awful shape when the Mayor bought it.”
“Why’s that?” Dean presses taking Sam off speaker in the process.
Apparently Sam must have told him something about demolition, because Dean asks Cassie if the Mayor had the Dorian house knocked down. Looks like it was some big deal. It even made the front page of the paper. The boys realize that the day after the house was torn down, the monster truck began its terror. Dean looks through a few more things while talking to Sam. Unfortunately, Cassie decides to use that time to come over to you.
“What’s your deal?”
Keeping your mouth shut, you just send her a glare. You aren’t up to another fight with Dean right now. She keeps pushing and making little comments about you being Dean’s little lost puppy who doesn’t know her place. Finally having enough you break your silence. This was the horrible woman you remember Dean going out with.
“You are, you were awful to Dean and hurt him for telling the truth. He tried so hard for you, and you didn’t care. Now you want to wiggle your way back in, claim the hero for yourself. Why, just so you can throw him away again? You always were a stuck up bitch, Cassie. Leave him alone, Dean doesn’t need your drama.”
Dean stands up quickly, closing his phone, thankfully, not having heard anything between the two of you. He grabs the articles he has printed out, telling Cassie he needs to check some things with Sam. You follow Dean to the Impala to go pick up the other Winchester. He never says a word when you get in the backseat instead of the empty shotgun.
Inside the motel room, the two of them are going over notes, and old articles. You are gathering up any of your loose belongings in Baby to pack away in your bag. You are closer to the end of this case and your time with the Winchesters. Patting the top of the car, you make your way into the room. As you are adding the new items to your bag in the room, Dean’s phone rings. He jumps up hearing the caller speaking, grabs the Impala’s keys and tells you both to move it.
When he finally hangs up, he tells you both the caller was Cassie, she is at her parents’ house. Apparently she was with her mom and the two of them saw the truck. Great, now she really gets to be the victim and cuddle up to Dean. He drives quickly to get to her, pulling up outside the house, the Impala is barely off before Dean is racing inside.
Getting inside both women are spooked. Dean is sitting beside Cassie with his arm around her, while her mom is shaking in the chair. It hurt how much Dean still cares for Cassie after everything she did to him. You have always been there, but he never cared about you that way. After the last few days, you knew he never would. Sam goes to make them both a cup of tea while you stand off to the side. She asks Sam to put a couple shots in the glass when he hands it to her. Sitting down in the other chair, Sam asks if they caught a glimpse of the driver.
“It didn’t look like anyone. Everything was going so fast, and then it just disappeared. Why didn’t it kill us?”
“Whoever’s controlling the truck wants you afraid first,” Dean told her.
Sam turns to her mom, “Mrs. Robinson, Cassie said that your husband saw the truck before he died.” The poor woman is unable to answer, she is just shaking.
“Mom?” Cassie tried.
“Oh, Martin was under a lot of stress. You can’t be sure about what he was seeing.”
Dean’s arm tightens around Cassie before he starts talking, which had you turning away. “Well after tonight I think we can be reasonably sure he was seeing a truck. With what happened tonight, you and Cassie are marked. Okay? You both could die. So if you know something now would be a really good time to tell us.” Cassie tries to stop Dean from pressing her mom, until the woman speaks up.
“Yes, okay he said he saw a truck.”
“Did he know who?” You ask, involving yourself for the first time tonight.
“He thought he did.”
“Who was it?” The poor woman is getting terribly upset as she prepares to answer your question.
“Cyrus, It was a man we knew named Cyrus.”
From the corner of your eye you see the brother’s exchange a look before Dean grabs something out of his bag. It is the article from earlier, about Dorian’s disappearance, he shows it to Mrs. Robinson, asking if that is Cyrus.
She turns away from you all, whispering that he had died more than 40 years ago.
Dean looks at Sam before quietly asking “How do you know he died, Mrs. Robinson? The paper just said he went missing. How are you sure he died?”
“We were all very young. I had dated Cyrus for a while, but I was also seeing Martin. In secret of course. Inter-racial couples didn’t go over too well back then. When I broke it off with Cyrus and he found out about Martin… I don’t know. He changed. His hatred, his hatred was frightening.”
You look up at Sam, what she is saying suddenly clicked. “The murders.”
The poor woman sounds like she is trying not to cry as she continues on. “Yes, there were rumors. People of color disappearing into some truck. Nothing was ever done. Martin and an... Martin and I were gonna be married in that little church near here, but at the last minute we decided we didn’t want the attention.”
“What happened then, with Cyrus?” You gently asked.
She is really crying now, and you feel awful for her. “The day we set for the wedding was the day someone set fire to the church. There was a children’s choir practicing in there. All of them died.”
“Did the attacks stop then?”
She completely broke down talking through her tears, you really feel like giving her a hug right now. “No! There was still one more. One night that truck came for Martin. It was Cyrus, he beat Martin something terrible. But Martin got loose, and he started hitting Cyrus back and just kept hitting.”
“Why didn’t you call the cops?” Dean cuts in.
“Don’t forget, we are talking about 40 years ago. He called his friends, Clayton Soames, and Jimmy Anderson. The three of them put Cyrus’ body in the truck and rolled it into the swamp at the end of his land. Those three kept that secret all of these years.”
“Now all three are gone.” Sam said.
“So is the Mayor,” Dean interjects.. “Now we heard him say that you of all people would know he is not a racist. What made him say that?”
Mrs. Robinson looks away before looking back at all of you. “He was a good man. Back then he was a young deputy back then investigating Cyrus’ disappearance. Once he figured out what Martin and the others had done he... he did nothing. All because he also knew what Cyrus had done.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Cassie cries.
“I was trying to protect them. Now there is no one left to protect.”
“Yes, there is.” Dean retorts a little rougher. He is looking at Cassie, of course he is. This is what Dean does, protect the hurt and weak. Be their knight in shining armor. You couldn’t take it and head outside for some air. Maybe the truck will come after you, at this point you just don’t care.
You lean against the trunk of the Impala facing away from the house trying and failing to keep the tears at bay. A few minutes later, you hear a voice behind you. “I’m sorry, Y/N. Are you going to be okay?”
“I just want to be done with this Sam. I can’t stay around him any longer. I need space to get my head on straight, and finally accept he doesn’t see me like that, and there will never be anything more between your brother and I.”
He joins you leaning against the trunk. “I really don’t want you to leave. But after all this, I understand if you do need to go. Just promise to check in with me every once in a while, okay? I promise I won’t tell Dean.”
“I’ll do my best, Sammy.”
“I’m only letting you get away with that name this one time.” He gives you a sad soft smile and you both go quiet, waiting for the older Winchester to appear.
Sam is the first to move when Dean’s footsteps are heard coming from the house. “You know, my life was so simple. Just school, exams, papers on polycentric cultural norms.”
“So you’re saying I saved you from a boring existence? You’re welcome.”
“Yeah, well I occasionally miss boring.”
“Anyways, we got a killer truck.”
“I miss boring conversations that didn’t begin with a killer truck.”
You just shake your head wanting to get this over with. “Alright, so this Cyrus guy is so evil that it even infected his truck. The swamp became his tomb and he went dormant for 40 some years. What woke him?”
“The start of construction, or in this case destruction on the house, it can awaken the spirits and make them restless.” Sam answered. “It went after the Mayor, who tore down the house and kept Cyrus’ murder quiet.”
Continuing to face away from the boys you ask with a grimace, “Does this mean we have to dredge the swamp for him?”
“Yep, you ready to go swimming?” Dean responds with a sarcastic tone.
Deciding to ignore him, you stay in your position until you hear Cassie telling Dean her mom is asleep, and wanting to know what is happening next. Turning around quickly you respond “No way in hell is she coming with us.”
Dean glares at you before leaning down and talking to Cassie. You really didn’t want to know what he was saying, mostly because you don’t believe your heart can handle it. It gets even worse when Cassie smiles at him and leans up to start kissing him. It hurts knowing what happened between them last night, but having it play out right in front of you, torture. You quickly get in the backseat and slam the door so you won’t be forced to see or hear anything else.
Sam opens his door saying something to Dean as he gets in. “Y/N, I’m so sorry.” You just nod and stare out the window, tears once again falling.
When Dean finally slides in the car you keep your focus to the side, never sparing him a glance. There are a few moments you can almost feel him looking at you.
“You know, you didn’t have to be so rude to her. She’s had a stressful night.” He breaks the silence in the car.
You never acknowledged his comment, and the two brothers began working on a plan to dredge the swamp.
Thankfully there is still a tractor on the property where they have been working on repairs. The boys manage to get a chain hooked on the truck and the tractor pulls it up. You are standing near the Impala out of the way, since they didn’t seem to need your help at the moment. After Sam is satisfied the truck was far enough out of the water to work on, Dean shuts the tractor off and gets down making his way over to the Impala. Sam follows behind.
“Now I know what she sees in you.”
“What?” Dean responds, rummaging through the back of the trunk.
“Come on man, you can admit you’re still in love with her.” Really Sam? Did he forget you were standing right here? You didn't need him to add salt to the wound too.
“Can we focus on this please?”
“Fine, what do we need out?”
“Gas, flashlight, lighters.”
“Got ‘em.”
“Alright, let’s finish this.” Dean shuts the trunk, looking over at you, and they head to the cab of the truck. When he opens the door, what you believe was once Cyrus falls out. They set to work salting and burning him. They haven’t needed or spoken to you, so you remained leaning on the driver’s side of the Impala. You hear Sam ask after a short time, if that should do it. You all have your answer seconds later when the ghost truck appears.
“I’m guessing that’s a no Sam.” Dean answers his brother.
“So burning the body had no effect on that thing?”
“Sure it did. Now it’s really pissed, and at us.”
“But Cyrus’ ghost is gone, right Dean?”
You begin walking toward the guys when Dean starts walking back to the Impala. “Apparently not the part that’s fused with the truck.”
“Wait, where are you going?” Sam calls out.
“We are goin’ for a drive. Gonna lead that thing away from here. You gotta burn that busted piece of crap.” Passing you Dean grabs your arm and pulls you with him back to the Impala.
“How the hell am I supposed to burn a truck, Dean?”
“I should help Sam.” It’s the first time you have spoken since you arrived here.
“I don’t know, figure something out,” Dean answers his brother, turning to you he just growls out “No.”
Dean threw something at Sam and you could hear him muttering behind you as Dean pushes you in the door and over to the passenger seat. Throwing Baby in reverse, he speeds off through the property and down the road. The ghost truck is quick to follow. You don’t think you have ever been in a car with someone going this fast. He pulls out his phone and dialing a number puts it on speaker.
“Hey, you gotta give me a minute,” Sam’s voice comes over the line.
“We don’t have a minute! What are we doing?” Dean is shouting at him.
“Ahh, let me get back to you.” You couldn’t believe Sam hung up on you guys at a time like this.
“Get back to me?” Dean is muttering next to you.
It is a tense few minutes until Dean’s phone rings, you are praying Sam has a way to end this.
“Answer it,” Dean tells you.
You answer it and put it on speaker so Dean could hear his brother.
“All, right Dean?”
“This better be good.”
“Where are you?”
“In the middle of freaking nowhere, with a killer truck on my ass! It’s like it knows I put the torch to Cyrus.”
“Listen, this is important. I have to know exactly where you are.”
“Decatur Road,” you fill in, seeing the passing sign.
“About two miles off the highway,” Dean adds.
“Headed East?”
“YES!” Dean yells, just before the truck rams into the back of the Impala sending it skidding. He fights to get the car back under control. “You Son of a bitch!”
Trying to hold tight you shut your eyes for a moment, feeling the Impala flying down the road underneath you. This is so not how you saw your life ending.
“Turn right, turn right, just up ahead.” Dean quickly makes the turn as Sam asks if he did so.
“Yeah, I made it, we need to move this along a little faster.”
“Alright, do you see a road up ahead?”
“No! Wait, no ah yes.” The truck is catching up and almost on the Impala’s left side now trying to run you all off the road.
“Turn left.” Dean had to hit the brakes in order to turn which had the truck sailing past. After you turn, go seven tenths of a mile and then stop.”
Did he say stop? Sam can’t seriously want you to stop with that truck so close can he?
“Stop?” Apparently, Dean feels the same.
“Yes, at exactly seven tenths.”
Dean is watching the speedometer closely, reaching his destination he spun the car around and moved to where Sam had wanted. Looking around, you are surrounded by the remains of an old building. The truck suddenly appears on the road in front of you. Sam comes over the line asking if Dean is still there and what was happening. Dean tells him it is just staring at you both, and Sam wants the truck to just come to you. When the truck revs its engine and suddenly comes barreling toward the Impala you see Dean grab the steering wheel as you close your eyes and hold tight to the seat preparing for the hit. It suddenly goes quiet and slowly opening your eyes you notice Dean looking around, but neither of you see the truck anywhere.
Sam’s voice comes from the phone, “You still there? Guys?”
“Where’d it go?” You ask, not really sure what happened.
“I don’t know.” Dean is just as confused as you.
“You guys are where the church was.”
“What church Sam! There isn’t much here.” Dean was a little on edge and wanting answers.
“The one Cyrus burned down, and all those kids died. The church is hallowed ground, whether the church is still there or not. Evil spirits cross over hallowed ground, and sometimes they’re destroyed. So I figured, maybe, that would get rid of it.”
Listening to Sam, Dean is nodding his head along before suddenly stopping, “Wait, maybe? Did you say maybe? What if you were wrong?”
“Huh. Honestly that thought hadn’t occurred to me.”
Dean hangs up on his brother mimicking Sam’s last sentence before threatening to kill him.
The drive back to Sam is rather quiet, both of you reflecting on your recent near miss. The inside of the truck is salted and lit on fire. Dean is in the tractor with water in the bucket from the swamp if the fire gets out of hand. The remains of the truck are pushed back into the swamp.
The three of you head back to the hotel to get cleaned up. Looking back over tonight and the past couple of days you have come to a decision on your future. Even with your lives on the line, Dean has barely spoken six words to you all night long, that tells you where you rank to him.
You're the last one to shower, probably because you had done the least amount of work tonight. The sun is starting to rise, and the boys want to get out of town before anyone says something about what they may have seen last night.
Checking the room one last time, you are sure nothing is left behind. You have already searched through the Impala, and retrieved your favorite gun and knife from the trunk. Dean has gone to grab breakfast for the road, but Sam has an idea of what you were doing and silently watches you going over the room.
He speaks up after a few minutes, “I want you to know, I’m really going to miss you. My brother’s a major idiot.”
You go over to hug the giant. “I’m going to miss you too Sam, keep in touch when you can. Good luck finding your dad, I’m sorry I can’t go along with you anymore. If you need me to look into anything on the downlow, shoot me a message. Take care of yourself, and that moron too.”
As you pick up your duffel and backpack he speaks up again. “You too. Where are you headed?”
“I don’t know.”
“Dean will be back in a minute, we can drop you off at the bus stop, just wait.” Halfway through his sentence the motel door opens and in walks the other brother. Sam is slightly relieved, he is hoping now that the case is over Dean will have calmed down and can talk you out of leaving.
“Why are we going to the bus stop?” He questions.
“I’m going to the bus stop, you don’t need to.”
“What are you doing there?”
“Leaving Dean,” he stares at you with a bewildered expression.
“Oh, so you’re not over being a little bitch, huh? I thought you didn’t desert the people you care about, guess that was wrong, or maybe you don’t really care about us?”
“I don’t stay where I’m not wanted Dean! You don’t want my help, and your life doesn’t concern me, ring a bell? I’m leaving so I won’t interfere with your life anymore, and you can go screw whoever you want, without hearing any comments from me.”
“How many times do I have to tell you to grow up! Just get in the car, no need to throw a hissy fit.”
“You wanted me gone, I'm leaving.”
“Then don’t come crying back!”
“Dean! Stop!” This isn’t going the way Sam was hoping it would, not at all.
You turn your back on the only man you ever truly cared about, took a deep breath, closed your eyes and willed the tears away till you could walk out of the room. Passing Sam you give him one last side hug, ruffle up his shaggy hair, and tell him to take care as you walk out of the room and the Winchesters’ lives.
“What the hell is her problem lately?” Dean looks to his brother to explain your recent behavior.
Sam turns at him in complete shock, before explaining. “You are Dean! Man, you are a bigger idiot than I thought. She’s been in love with you for years, your best friend for almost twenty years. You threw all that away for some chick you spent a few weeks with years ago, who then turned her back on you. We both know Y/N has never been like this before, something was really bothering her. You could have just talked to her and asked why she was behaving this way, but you just kept yelling at her, and throwing Cassie in her face.”
Dean is frozen in place, staring at the door hearing Sam’s words. He’d been harboring feelings for you for years, but didn’t believe you would ever see him like that. You deserve so much better than him, he is just going to drag you down. So he has one night stands to try and take his mind off you for a little while. You two had gotten even closer when he almost died on the last hunt, he didn’t want to face the hurt of you rejecting him if he said something. Instead he saw Cassie’s call as a distraction, a way to push his feelings away again, that’s all. He remembered what she did, how you put him back together. He knew he should have kept this case professional and was fighting internally with himself the whole time, that’s why he kept snapping at you. In the end, he didn’t think you would actually leave. He should know better, everyone leaves him.
“She can’t leave.” It takes him a moment, but he rushes out the door to make you come back inside. Looking around Dean doesn’t see you anywhere.
“It’s too late, you really hurt her, Dean. Now, you have to let her go,” Sam tells him from the doorway.
Punching the roof of the Impala, Dean slides down next to it on the pavement. Head in his hands, he realizes he finally pushed too far, he hurt you, and now he lost you.
Thank you for reading!

Know When To Let Go Part 1
Pairing- Dean, x Female!Reader.
Word count- 3,889
Warnings- A lot of ANGST, Dean is a bit of jerk, fighting,
Summary- You almost lost Dean to a heart attack, now after one phone call there is another threat from the past that could come between you two.
A/N-I know this isn't one of my ongoing series, but this has been in my drafts for years. The first 2 parts are a rewrite of the Route 66 episode. I'm trying to get back into writing, I promise. It's been so long since I've posted, I'm not even sure what to use for a taglist so I'm going off the last Forever tag list. If you would like to be removed let me know. Not Beta'd, all mistakes are mine
Sitting in the back of Baby, you think back on this last week, it was one of the worst of your life. During the last hunt Dean had been electrocuted which led to him having a heart attack. Doctors didn’t give him much time, you and Sam worked like crazy looking for some way to save him. Finally, Sam found a faith healer, which turned into another case on its own. Now, Dean was in the motel room saying goodbye to the chick he met on this job. Sam was kind enough to bring her back to talk to Dean. No, you weren’t jealous at all, but does he seriously have to meet a girl in every town you stop in?
Your parents had been hunters and would drop you off at Bobby’s, which is where you met Sam and Dean as kids. Dean was a year older, and had taken you under his wing. When you were twelve, your parents never made it back from a hunt. You lived with Bobby until you turned 18, then you started hunting with the Winchester instead of researching at Bobby’s. Sam was like a little brother to you, even if he shot up taller than all of you. Dean was your best friend and as you grew up, he was the man who stole your heart. You never saw him sharing those feelings so you kept them bottled up. This left you standing by and watching, the constant hookups and flirting breaking your heart a little more each time. Sam has known since you were kids there was something between you and Dean, and often pushes you to tell his brother. You could never bring yourself to do it, and in turn, lose Dean altogether.
You were there for Dean through everything, the rough hunts, Sam leaving for Stanford, fights with his dad, then John disappearing a few months ago which led to picking up Sam who then lost Jess. You couldn’t imagine what losing Dean last week would have done to you. When he was in the hospital, you came close to telling him how you felt when he was holding you next to him in the tiny hospital bed. The two of you had gotten fairly close over the last case, but once again someone else had caught his eye.
The three of you stop at a gas station when Dean gets a phone call and walks off. Sam is standing next to the car looking over a map to plan your route to Pennsylvania, where your next case is. Dean starts heading back to the car putting his phone away.
“I think I found a way we can bypass that construction just east of here. We might even make Pennsylvania faster than we thought,” Sam calls out.
Dean looks out over the car before turning to the two of you, “Problem is, we’re not going to Pennsylvania”
You and Sam look at each other before looking at Dean. “Where are we going then?” You ask.
“I got a call from an, uh, old friend. Her father was killed last night, thinks it might be our kind of thing.”
“What? Who’s the friend?” Sam wanted to know.
“Listen, trust me on this, she never woulda called, never, if she didn’t need us.”
There is a sinking feeling in your stomach, “who is the friend Dean?” He just ignores you and hops in the car.
As you were driving Sam again tries to get Dean to tell him who the old friend is. You are headed to Mississippi, which gives you a pretty good idea of who this friend is and you are livid.
Dean finally says the name you are dreading, Cassie. You had been traveling with Dean when he met her in Ohio, and they had gone out for a few weeks. You didn’t like her then and you really didn’t like her the night Dean came back to the hotel drunk and heartbroken because she ended things. She was a stuck up snob, she absolutely crushed Dean.
“She actually had the nerve to call you and ask for help?” you exclaim. Unfeaking believable, and apparently Dean is still pretending he can’t hear you.
“You never mentioned her before,” Sam is telling Dean.
“Really?” When Sam just looks at him Dean continues, “ Yeah, we went out.”
“Like more than one night? You actually dated somebody?”
“What are you not getting here? Dad, Y/N, and I were working a job in Ohio, she was in college.
We went out for a couple of weeks.”
“What happened between you guys?”
“Drop it Sam,” you really didn’t want to dig up this part of the past.
“Was there more going on?” The dense man kept pushing.
“Yeah, they went out. She was a bitch, they broke up, it broke his heart, and I had to fix her mess.”
“Knock it off, Y/N. That was years ago, and in the past.” Now he acknowledges you, just to defend her. He couldn’t still have feelings for her could he?
“Okay. So I’m sorry about her dad, but why would she call you if he was in a car accident? Not really our kinda thing?” It took Sam a minute, “wait, does she know what we do?” Dean didn’t answer staring ahead. “Dude, you didn’t?”
“He actually told the bitch what we really do, Sam.”
“Watch it Y/N.” Dean gives you a glare through the rearview mirror, and you give one right back.
Sam looks at you curiously. You aren’t usually one for hate unless they deserve it.
“Wait. You told her. You told her our secret! Our big family number one rule, we do what we do and we shut up about it. I never said a word about it to Jess for over a year and a half, instead I lied to her. But you tell some girl you only knew a few weeks, everything.” Dean still didn’t answer, just looking straight ahead. “Dean!”
“Yeah, looks like.” He just pushed down on the accelerator ignoring Sam’s bitchface.
“Witch, didn’t deserve to know anything,” you muttered under your breath. Judging by the glare Dean sends back he still heard you.
There isn’t much talking between any of you after that. You arrive in town and Dean parks near the newspaper building and quickly exits the car. Guess she told him where she works.
Walking inside you see three people arguing and unfortunately recognize one of them as Cassie. One of the men leaves and the other walks away when Cassie turns to face the three of you, giving Dean a grin and calling out his name. Dean gives her a small grin. Why is she so happy? She's the one who dumped him. Oh she just made you fuming mad.
“Hey Cassie.” She doesn’t say anything and they just stare at each other before Dean continues. “This is my brother Sam, and you remember Y/N.”
You would be pretty shocked if she didn’t remember you. After calming Dean down and he finally passed out that night, you went to her apartment and bitched her out. Which is probably why she smiled at Sam and ignored you.
“I’m sorry bout your dad,” Dean started.
“Yeah, Me too,” she answers.
Well, she does talk. This staring is driving you nuts. “You called Cassie, apparently you think you need our help.”
“I didn’t know you would still be around.” She quickly glances at you before going back to Dean, “Maybe we should go somewhere else.”
“Well, I don’t desert the people I care about.”
Dean glares at you as everyone leaves the building and walks back to the Impala to follow her to her mother’s house. When she gets in her car Dean grabs your arm stopping you. “That’s enough out of you! You don’t have to be such a bitch, you know.”
He climbs behind the wheel of Baby, and you roll your eyes before sliding in yourself.
Cassie brings out tea when you arrive, she settles down close to Dean. She tells you all how her mother has been in bad shape, so she was staying at the house with her. She has been very nervous lately and worried about her husband. When Dean asks why, Cassie mentions her dad had been scared and seeing things, like an awful-looking black truck following him. Sam interrupts to ask who the driver was, but apparently her dad never mentioned one. The truck was always appearing and disappearing. Her father’s car had been dented in the accident, and it looks like something big.
You’ve been watching Dean, and have to hide a laugh when he is giving his tea a weird look before quickly putting it aside on the table. You turn your attention back to what Cassie is saying. The sooner you solve this, the sooner you can leave this town.
“Dad sold cars, and was always driving a new one. There wasn’t a scratch on it before the accident. It was raining hard that night, and mud was everywhere. There was one distinct set of muddy tracks which led from dad’s car to the edge where he went over.” She paused trying to gain control of her emotions, “only his tracks.”
“The first accident, he was a friend of your father’s?” Dean asks her.
“Yes, Clayton Soames, they were best friends, and owned the dealership together. Same thing, a dent, no tracks, and the cops said he lost control too.”
Dean wants to know if she has any thoughts on why the two men would have been targets, but she doesn’t. Then Sam asks her if she thought it was the vanishing truck her dad saw.
“When you say it out loud like that, listen, I’m a bit skeptical about this… ghost stuff… or whatever it is you guys do.”
“Skeptical? If I remember right you said I was nuts.”
“If you don’t believe it, why did you bother calling Cassie?” You cut in after Dean. Getting another glare from the man.
“That was back then, I just can’t explain what happened so I called you.” Her and Dean are back to staring at each other, I just might be sick you think.
“Excuse us a second,” Dean gets up and grabs your arm, pulling you out of your seat across from him and to the corner of the room. “If you aren’t actually going to be any help you can leave, and go wait in the car.”
Before you can reply, Cassie’s mom walks in and she gets up to talk to her. Dean walks away leaving you standing alone. She introduces Dean as a friend from college and Sam as his sibling, you get nothing. Sam sees you hurry outside trying to hide the tears in your eyes, he knows Dean’s behavior has to be getting to you. Excusing himself he follows you outside.
“Sam, you are always telling me I need to be honest with Dean about my feelings. This is why I can’t, he’ll choose some chick who hurt him over me, the person who has been there for him for over 15 years.” Dean comes out and you turn away from him quickly.
“I don’t understand what your problem is, but that was unnecessary,” he snaps at you.
The three of you head back to the motel shortly. It is a quiet ride back, you and Dean aren’t speaking to one another, and Sam doesn’t want to get either of you going. Usually, you share a bed with Dean, but that isn’t going to happen tonight. At least the room has a couch, as bad as it looks it is still better than the floor.
Early the next morning Dean’s phone rang waking you up from the little sleep you had gotten. It’s Cassie, apparently someone else died during the night, same way as the others. Dean is hurrying both you and Sam to get ready and out the door. When you arrive at the scene Cassie is talking to one of the men from yesterday. Dean is quick to walk over, you and Sam following behind.
“Did the cops check for additional denting on Jimmy’s car, see if it was pushed?”
The man looked at Dean then back to Cassie, “Who is this?”
“Dean and Sam Winchester, and… his friend Y/N, they’re family friends. This is Mayor Harold Todd.”
“There is one set of tracks, just one. Nothing points to foul play here.”
“Mayor, the police, officials, everyone is taking their cues from you, if you are indifferent about this then..”
“Indifferent!” He interrupts her
“Mayor, would you close the road if the victims were white?”
“Are you suggesting I’m racist Cassie, I’m the last person you should talk to like that.”
When Cassie tries to find out why, he just tells her to ask her mother and walks away.
From there Dean drives you all back to the motel room to change into fed clothes. While in the bathroom getting ready you can hear the boys talking, well Sam at least trying to get information from Dean about Cassie
.
“I’ll say this for her, she’s fearless,” Sam starts, Dean just humming. “I bet she kicked your ass a few times. It’s interesting you guys never look at each other at the same time. You look when she isn’t and she checks you out when you aren’t. It’s an interesting observation you know, in an observationally interesting way.”
Just shut-up about her Sam, you think to yourself. “You think we might have more pressing issues here?” Dean finally responds.
“Hey, if I’m hitting a nerve.”
“Y/N, hurry up we’re leaving, let’s go,” Dean yells for you.
You leave for the docks to talk to a few guys who are friends of the victims, Cassie has mentioned they would be there having lunch.
“Excuse me. Are you Ron Stubbins?” You asked, reaching the two men first. When he nods, Dean takes over talking.
“You were friends with Jimmy Anderson?”
“Who wants to know?” Ron counters.
“We’re with Mr. Anderson’s insurance company, got to dot the I’s and cross some T’s.”
“We were just wondering if the deceased had mentioned any unusual experiences recently?” Sam cut in.
The men are looking at the three of you funny so you step in, “Well visions, hallucinations. It’s part of a medical examination kind of thing. This is all standard.”
“It takes three of you to come down? What company did you say you were with?”
“I’m new, these guys are training me.”
“All National Mutual,” Dean cut in. “Can you tell me, did he ever mention seeing a truck? A big black truck?”
“What the hell are you all talking about? You even speaking English?” Ron asks.
“Son this truck, is it a big scary monster looking thing?” The man with Ron cut in.
“Yeah, actually, I think so.” Dean answers him. The man just nods. “What about it?”
“I’ve heard of a truck like that,” he finally answers..
That gets Sam’s attention, “You have, Where?”
“Not a where, but a when, son. Back in the ‘60’s there was a string of deaths. Black men. Story goes they disappeared in a big, nasty, black truck.”
“Did they ever catch the guy?” Dean wants to know.
“No, never found him. Hell, not sure if they even really looked. See there was a time, this town wasn’t too friendly to all its citizens.”
“Thank you for your time,” you tell the men as the three of you turn to walk back to the Impala.
The guys start talking while you follow behind.
“This truck,” Dean starts.
“Keeps coming up doesn't it?” Sam fills in.
“You know, I was thinking. You heard of the flying dutchman?” Dean asks his brother.
“That ghost ship? It was infused with the captain’s evil spirit, and basically part of him.”
“What if this is like the same thing here? You know, a phantom truck, an extension of some bastard’s ghost, that is re-enacting past crimes?”
“Could be, the victims have all been black men.”
“It’s more than that, everything seems to be connected to Cassie and her family.”
“It’s all, all about Cassie,” you mutter under your breath, but apparently not low enough again.
“What is your deal?” Dean turns to you, “you have been a nag ever since I told you we were coming here! All these stupid little comments. What the hell is your problem?”
“You really have to ask me what my problem is? You are so blinded by what you once felt for her. I was there with you Dean, when things ended, I know how much she hurt you. I absolutely hate her, and so did you before yesterday.”
“She hurt me, me, not you. I never asked for you to help me, it’s not up to you how I handle this. My life doesn’t concern you, stay out of it! Grow up Y/N, I’m sick and tired of your attitude.”
“Maybe it’s just time I did get out of it. If I’m gone then I can’t interfere in your life anymore.”
“Maybe that would be a great idea. I’m over the way you’ve been lately.”
“Fine, after this case, I’m out of your hair.”
“Best thing you’ve said all case.”
“Alright guys, let’s just calm down,” Sam tries to intervene before it blows up, turning to Dean, “you go work that angle with Cassie and her family, talk to her”
“Yeah, I will.” Dean throws a glare your way when he answers.
“You might also wanna mention that other thing.”
“What other thing?”
“The unfinished business between you two. Dean, what is going on between you?”
You can’t listen so you walk away to calm yourself down.
“Maybe, we were a bit more involved than I said before.” Sam just stares at him. “Okay so a lot more. I told her our secret, what’s out there and what we do. I shouldn’t have.”
“Come on man, everyone needs to open up to someone at some point.”
“No, I don’t. It was stupid of me to get that close. Just look how it ended.”
“Is that what’s wrong with Y/N? How bad this thing ended with you and Cassie?”
“I don’t know what the hell her problem is, but she needs to get over it fast.”
“Did you love her?”
“Y/N? She’s my best friend, dude I can’t.”
“I meant Cassie, but good to know your mind goes there first.”
“No, didn’t. I’m leaving.”
“You did love her, and you dumped her.” Sam watches Dean for a minute, “Wait, she dumped you?”
Dean walked over to the Impala’s door, “Just get in the car, get in the car.”
“What about Y/N?” Sam asks, getting in and looking around for you.
“She can walk back, maybe it will cool her down.”
You walked around the corner trying to calm yourself down and keep the tears at bay. When you are turning to go back you see the Impala speed by. They seriously left you here? Dean really did want you gone. Looking down, you are glad you didn’t grab the heeled shoes, at least this pair wasn't awful for walking.
You turn back around and start the thirty minute walk to the motel. This time you can’t stop the tears from falling. You have loved Dean for years, and been his best friend even longer. You want to be there for Dean. You were best friends, wasn’t that how it was supposed to be? If you are honest with yourself, you would know it was more than that, he was it for you. It was clear lately, you're not the one for him. Apparently you mean nothing to him. Years ago, when he was hurt by Cassie, he changed and didn’t let anyone, even you get as close as he used to. Maybe you should get your own room tonight, and start adjusting to being on your own. This case couldn’t wrap up fast enough for you to get out of this town.
You arrive back at the motel and the Impala is nowhere to be seen. Either they aren’t back yet, or Dean dropped Sam off and went to her. Heading to the room you plan to grab your things and get another room. Opening the door you think you are alone, until Sam walks out of the bathroom.
“Y/N, I’m glad you’re back, I’m sorry Dean left without you.”
“Don’t worry about it Sam, he obviously isn’t.
”
“What is going on with you two?”
“I think we have just had enough of each other.”
“It’s more than that.”
You let out a sigh before turning to sit on the bed. “Dean doesn’t think straight around Cassie, he never has. I don’t want to see him hurt again, because I know she will. He changed the minute he got her call.”
“When are you going to tell my brother you are in love with him?”
“I’m not Sam, I told you last night, he doesn’t share those feelings. Hell, he wants me gone, out of his life, and maybe that isn’t a bad idea.”
“What are you saying?”
“Our friendship is barely hanging on by a thread, I’m not going to cut that final one by telling him how I feel. He wouldn’t wait for this case to even be over before he made me leave. It’s clear I’ve overstayed my welcome with you two.”
“No, you haven’t. I think we all just need a break after this. You and Dean aren’t thinking straight right now.”
“I’m going to grab another room. I don’t think we need the three of us in one tonight.”
“You don’t need to do that.”
“It would be better if...”
“No,” Sam cuts you off, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m sorry, but Dean is with Cassie, we need to figure out how this relates back to her family. I don’t know when he’ll even get back tonight, so don’t worry about another room. Everything will be back to normal in a day or two.”
“Sam, I’m leaving when this case is over. I need to be on my own for a bit. You will always be my not so little, little brother, but I can’t stay around him anymore.
Y/N, come on. It’s just a fight, you guys will be fine in a few days.
“I’m going to hit the shower.” You don’t want him to try and talk you out of this decision.
Walking into the bathroom you quickly turn on the water so Sam won’t hear you cry. After 18 years of friendship this is where you finally part ways from the man who has been there for you since he was 8 years old. Dean doesn’t want you around and you can’t keep watching him sleep with all those other women. The knife in your chest twists a little more every time. Getting out of the shower you get ready for bed, sleeping on the couch again because you couldn’t bring yourself to sleep in the bed that smells like Dean, even if it would be the last time. You know Sam is asleep and you don’t fight the tears that surface once again.
Part 2-coming soon

Happy 44th Birthday to the hero that will never die, because he lives forever in my heart.
To the warrior who taught me to pick myself up every time I fall down...
...dust myself off and get back into the battle...
... who taught me to fight against the bad guys no matter how much power they wield...
...the truth is I owe you my life.
You inspire me constantly, and you will always be my hero.
Oh, and you're awfully pretty too! 😍🥰
