Cooling Units for Oregon Residents

With the incoming hot weather this weekend in the Portland area, I wanted to share a couple resources for FREE cooling units for Oregon residents.

If you are in Multnomah County, Multnomah County will provide free A/C units to households making 60% or below the median income. There is a waitlist and priority will go to adults who are 60+ years old, have medical conditions that increase risk of heat-related illness, and/or are living alone. The link to apply is here. You can also call 311.

If you are outside Multnomah County and are on Oregon Health Plan (medicaid), they can provide cooling systems through Care Oregon's Social Needs Assistance program. There is a waitlist and similarly priority goes to folks who are at higher risk. The link to apply is here.

Mental health conditions do count as serious health conditions and SHOULD make you eligible for free cooling units.

At this exact moment, not all counties have their emergency cooling centers open but you can check the 211 website for updates. Each county has their own rules and regulations as far as when they open up cooling centers so unfortunately I am not able to speak to when cooling centers will open at this time.

Do you mind explaining why TBKTS is problematic?

Hi! I wouldn't necessarily use the word "problematic" for TBKTS. It's received its fair share of criticisms over the years from both clinicians and clients/patients, all of which are certainly valid. Van der Kolk includes research in the book that doesn't actually exist or is greatly exaggerated (link to a Washington Post article about that). He's also been accused of plagiarizing the Rorschach study during the Nuremberg Trials on Nazi War criminals. He generally just doesn't include much citation for his research. He was also fired from his own practice for creating a hostile work environment (I read in passing somewhere that he's been accused of sexual misconduct toward his employees as well but I haven't found a source for that). There's a lot of criticism towards how graphic the book is and how dismissive Van der Kolk can be towards victims of trauma. There's also criticism that he has a cishet white eurocentric male approach to addressing trauma. Here's a good reddit thread about some of the issues people find in TBKTS.

If you read the book and find it helpful, that's fantastic! I'm happy for you! I know plenty of people who have read it and have found it eye opening, encouraging, and validating. I also know a lot of people who found it highly triggering and upsetting, and from a clinical standpoint, he's not fantastic at his research. At the end of the day, you should be using the resources that are most appropriate for you. Whether that includes TBKTS or not is up to you.
