You know what’s wild? Remembering that children hear things for the first time without context and are literally like, “What?”
I just said “See you later, alligator” to a four-year-old and I think it was the first time they had ever heard that. They froze in their tracks, looked at me completely bewildered then replied, “See you later, chicken” and kept walking.

highs and lows
sometimes the dark lingers on longer than the night
even so hold on, know that the sun will rise,
what’s old will be made new
with mercies at dawn.
---- should i rise or should i fall? Lord you’re with me through it all

I felt my lungs inflate with the onrush of scenery—air, mountains, trees, people. I thought, “This is what it is to be happy.”

Foreshadows
It used to be our best memories
That haunted me, but recently I’ve
Discovered that our worst days
Breaks me along fault lines
I’ve never known.
Yesterday I dreamt of that day 2 years ago, when I sat in SGH’s library beside you, separated by a cubicle. You stood up when the sun was setting, the golden hour too bright, too startling. I saw you walk behind me to sit in the corner with her. I could blink back my tears but I couldn’t stop the divider from casting an ever growing shadow across my paper. The darkness crawling, creeping, to fill my every page.
And I woke up shaking,
Crying and overbreathing,
Because I had forgotten the
Pain of the past foreshadowing
The present.
