  My favorite headcanon Danny Phantom is that the reason that no besides the Fentons and Vlad ever got a portal working is because you need a halfa to do it. Natural portals open all the time, they’re a result of the worlds pressing too close together, too much energy in one place. And some ghosts can punch through the veil, but it’s not a stable portal. No, creating that kind of permanent rip in reality requires a conduit that can handle funneling millions of joules of energy across dimensions. Something that’s connected to both sides, firmly planted in the physical world but able to touch the ghost one.

    For a long time, that could only be accomplished with magical artifacts. But then a couple of college kids with a little too much occult knowledge and scientific curiosity found another way- A human, frozen at the moment of death, in immense pain. Someone who should have died, but survived through the energy their connection to the ghost zone gave them.

    Jack and Maddy took that accident as a confirmation that the portal could work, but spent a decade and a half stumped about why subsequent test runs failed. Their solution was to scale up- better parts, better filters, better refined energy for generating the portal. But unless Danny stepped into the portal, it never would have worked.
