Hello Everyone,
I provide you a link to my learning partner Katie's blog. We Zoom chatted a couple days ago and discussed my post on metacognition in the classroom and Katie's DEI post. Diversity, Equality/Equity & Inclusion either in the workplace or classroom. During our conversation I told Katie that I was trying to figure out how to bring inclusion into my photography class, not among the students but whom the students shoot for their stories. She suggested just starting with a simple discussion about it. A simple discussion is a step in the right direction. Thanks Katie I enjoyed our chat.

As a graphic designer, I see AI as an incredible tool that enhances our capabilities rather than replacing us. Here's why:
Making Our Work Easier
Efficiency: AI can take care of repetitive and time-consuming tasks. Think about how long it takes to resize images or generate different variations of a design. AI can do this in a snap, freeing us up to focus on the more creative aspects of our projects.
Boosting Creativity: Sometimes we hit a creative block, and AI can help us push through that. With AI-driven design assistants, we can get suggestions for color schemes, layouts, and design elements that we might not have thought of. It’s like having an extra set of eyes and ideas.
Data Insights: AI can analyze user data and tell us what works best for different audiences. This helps us create designs that are not just visually appealing but also highly effective and targeted.
Personalization: With AI, we can create designs that are highly personalized at scale. Imagine being able to tailor content to individual user preferences without spending hours on each version.
The Human Touch
Creativity and Intuition: No matter how advanced AI gets, it can’t replicate the human touch. Our creativity, intuition, and personal artistic vision are what make our designs unique and meaningful.
Complex Problem Solving: Some design challenges require a deep understanding and nuanced problem-solving skills that AI simply can't provide. We bring experience and a critical eye that is essential in these situations.
Ethical Considerations: Designers have to consider ethical issues, cultural sensitivities, and the social impact of their work. These are areas where human judgment and empathy are crucial.
Working Together
A Hybrid Approach: I believe the future of graphic design will be a collaboration between AI and designers. AI will handle routine tasks and provide data-driven suggestions, while we bring the creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.
Evolving Skills: As designers, we need to adapt and learn how to work effectively with AI tools. This means staying updated with the latest tech and understanding how to leverage AI to enhance our work.
In the end, AI is here to make our lives easier and our work better. It’s an exciting time to be a designer because we have these powerful tools at our disposal, allowing us to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Rather than fearing AI, we should embrace it as a valuable partner in our creative journey.

"Students with well-developed metacognition can identify concepts they do not understand and select appropriate strategies for learning those concepts. They know how to implement strategies they have selected and carry out their overall study plan. They can evaluate their strategies and adjust their plans based on outcomes".
Metacognition, or thinking about thinking, is a great tool for graphic design students. As an instructor, I encourage my students to reflect on their creative process. I ask them to think about why they made certain design choices and how they can improve their work. This self-reflection helps them become more confident and independent designers. Simple activities like keeping a design journal or doing peer critiques can make a big difference. By thinking about their own thinking, students can develop better skills and come up with more creative and thoughtful designs.

As we progress to a more automated future there is one thing I feel Ai can't replicate and that is empathy and emotional intelligence. Design ethics play a crucial role in brand identity and using tools like Ai can help with our process but never replace us.

How are your students perceiving your teaching
Evaluation Strategies: Here is a list and brief description of a few of the feedback strategies taken from the book The Skillful Teacher written by Stephen D Brookfield.
The One Minute Paper: Students take one minute to write a quick response to questions about what you had covered. Make sure it is confidential to get the best results.
The Muddiest Point: This is where you ask your students to write down what part of your lecture they had the most difficulty understanding.
The Learning Audit: At the end of each week students are asked to respond to 3 questions. What do I know now I didn't know last week. What can I do I couldn't do this time last week. What could I teach others to do or know I couldn't last week.
Clickers: Students are given a few statements of course content and asked to number them is relation to importance.
There are a few other including the most reliable source of evaluation the CIQ (critical incident questionnaire). Want to know more about the CIQ? Do your research and respond to this post with your results.

5 Year Professional Goal
Tumblr media
My 5 year goal is to be our department head. In 5 years time our fantastic and very appreciated current department head will be at the end of their second term and the dept will be looking for a replacement. I would then make it my goal to add a one year online and in person certificate course. Having Justice and Equity values and professional principles will get me there.

Resistance to Learning
Tumblr media
In Chapter 16 from The Skillful Teacher, Brookfield talks about students that resist learning. He states that as teachers we love what we teach and don't understand why the student wouldn't want to learn it. Brookfield says we need to be aware of conversion obsession where teachers get obsessed trying to convert reluctant students into becoming enthusiastic learners. Resistance to learning is complex with many layers. Don't put all your energy into winning over these students as a majority of the students are very open to learning.
