There's probably going to be quite a bit of Sherlock, Dr. Who, LotR/The Hobbit fandom stuff on here, and definitely quite a bit of Martin Freeman. Hope you enjoy! :D

I totally agree with most of this. Stuff before episode 52, like... yeah, okay, cool. Gohan needs to train to be up to snuff once more. He joined in the fight, he dealt out damage, but he needs to be stronger. He says this EXPLICITLY while he hugs his family, so we know this is important to him on a personal level. Post 52... it doesn’t seem like Gohan’s been training, Piccolo is even like, ‘Bro, don’t go to Gohan for help’, and they’re clearly putting Gohan’s character to rest... and it kind of kills me. D: I love Gohan. I love that he’s a total nerd, but he can be totally vicious if he’s pushed far enough. To me he is the embodiment of how saiyan nature and human nature don’t entirely align (head canon stuff here). He’s a precious cinnamon roll until you PUSH THE RIGHT BUTTONS. I feel like he SHOULD be strong - he’s mystic during Buu saga ffs, and it hasn’t been all that long since then when he was giving Buu a run for his money. Freeza even says, “Don’t mess with Beerus, don’t mess with Buu” so we know Buu was a bfd. After getting his potential unlocked I feel like Trunks should have noticed his energy being high, not low. So FUCK YOU DRAGON BALL SUPER.
Also, yes. In episode 52 (an episode that shall live on in infamy!!!) future Trunks and Gohan should have totally interacted more, and the first question out of Gohan’s mouth shoulda been, “What are you doing here????” And then Trunks spills his woes, and they get to bond or whatever. And yeah, leaving Trunks with Mr. Satan... LAME. Hated it. Made things awkward and lame. I think Gohan would have definitely put work on hold for the evening to spend time with Trunks. Also, this is purely selfish, I would have loved to have Videl give a show of strength so that Trunks was like, “Well I can totally see why he’s interested in this chick.” Or have them talk about Buu together. Or... SOMETHING. SO MUCH POTENTIAL. And you’re right, it’s clear they tried to shove their interaction into this one episode since they clearly don’t intend to bring Gohan back around. :’(
I’m not done with DBS only because I didn’t go in it purely for Gohan. They’ve pretty much ignored him up until now, so I would have abandoned it long ago otherwise. I’m interested in this Goku Black plot line. I don’t like that they rehashed two movies. I don’t like that we got a tournament where Goku had to be the winner of everything. I don’t know why we need a super saiyan god, and now that we have it I don’t understand how Goku and then Vegeta could achieve it without a freakin’ saiyan pow wow and they never explain it or why super saiyan god looks different now than it did when we first say it. I don’t like the sub-par animation. I dunno... the way I talk it makes it sound like, why bother, lol. Oh well. I’m interested. I’m going to keep watching it.
After the cut it’s purely my speculation and commentary about Gohan. It’s long, but... it’s there to read, and it gives @truhania some love for being awesome at the end!! Truhania is totally awesome. I lover Boxer and Rice and you should, too! I love open discussion of Gohan’s characterization. :D
Post-Namek arc, I think Gohan definitely hit the books. I don’t think he trained. Whether or not that’s what he prefers is another question. I think he wants to be a scholar so I think ultimately he loves the pursuit of learning, but do I think he prefers studying to saving the world? Definitely not. Do I think he prefers studying to fighting or training... I don’t know. I think he views them both as the things he’s kind of obligated to do because he’s good at both of them. I think he loves to do what is expected of him. I think he loves to please people. I think him speaking out against his mom and saying he had to wish back Piccolo was a huge moment for him, and he was just a five year old baby child. I think after he got back from Namek, though, with his duty fulfilled, he would have gone back to what he was doing before - studying his ass off at his mother’s beckoning. Which is fine. I think making her happy would make him happy. Goku was gone with no particular demands on Gohan, and Piccolo might have hung around to check on Gohan, but he certainly didn’t call Gohan to train. Piccolo at this point loves Gohan and I think he kind of is starting to see Gohan’s nature. I think if Gohan was like, “Hey Piccolo-san, let’s train for a bit!” Piccolo would be like, “Hellz yeah.” Beyond that I don’t think Piccolo would instigate it.
Buu saga Gohan’s definitely not weak af, but it’s clear he hasn’t been maintaining his full strength after Cell. I actually don’t fault him for this. To get that strength for Cell he trained not just for three years solid with Goku and Piccolo, but another full year in the Room of Spirit and Time with just Goku whose single minded focus was getting Gohan to be super saiyan, so Goku really tested him physically and probably mentally every minute of every day... for. A. Year. I mean, yeah, Gohan by himself with other obligations (a baby brother to raise and studies and whatnot) would probably never keep up with that high peak unless that was his sole focus. How much Gohan kept up on his physicality at all during that time is up for debate. ChiChi is the one that trained Goten, not Gohan. Gohan didn’t even know Goten couldn’t fly, and he didn’t know Goten could go Super Saiyan. So we can guess that Gohan played some role in Goten’s upbringing (they seem close and we see a few things to indicate he’s protective of him and we see that one episode of Gohan tying Goten’s tie after Buu and it is so freakin’ cute) but not necessarily in Goten’s training. That to me kind of shows that Gohan’s been out of touch with his training. However he’s strong enough to be impervious to bullets, to bend gun barrels like me bending a Twizzler, to stop and LIFT falling jumbo jets, and all around can cause havoc if he really wants to. Dude is strong.
As to ChiChi’s behaviors... I don’t know, they’re kind of contradictory in how they portray her. When Gohan gets back, she’s crazy (understandably!!! - her husband was dead for a year and her son was kidnapped for a year and she was told way after the fact about both incidents) yet when Gohan’s about to take off to Namek she drops him off personally since he’s made it clear that this is what he wants to do, and this is what he’s going to do. When he’s on Namek I think she has the idea that shit is bad, so she knows her son is in danger - especially since her husband is taking off after him. I’m sure as soon as she gets Gohan back she holds him pretty tight and gets him back to his studies. He finds his saiyan armor under his bed, if I remember right, so yes - ChiChi can be cray about certain things, but I don’t think she’s malicious and would bury his suit somewhere. But... I’m a ChiChi fan. I’m biased. I recognize this fully. XD
And I’m just gunna say... I LOVE talking about Gohan’s character with folks, because it helps me expand my view of Gohan. I’m not trying to argue to be crabby or whatever, I like the back and forth about something I care about because otherwise... I’m just a chick on a laptop trying to think about a character and his motivations when he’s not my original creation. I write about Gohan a lot. I need outside opinions. I have a specific idea about who Gohan is, what he thinks about his past, how he would react to certain situations, so... when someone can give me insight (as truhania has done for me) it excites me! :D
Yes, Gohan is fictional and written by a writer who created him and must have loved him at some point (clearly not anymore... cough cough, damn you Toriyama, cough)... but there’s a lot about Gohan we don’t get to see, and Gohan means different things to different people, and I view characters I have interest in as three dimensional people with a lot of depth, with history, and with different motivations. We see Gohan from childhood to adulthood - we know his history, we know the kinds of things that motivate him. There’s a lot about his creator (Toriyama) that has changed over time with regards to his view of DBZ and his characters (and his motivations...). We get some insight into Gohan throughout his life, but when the creators of Gohan become untrustworthy it makes it impossible to mindlessly agree with what is said to be canon in more recent material. (honestly I feel this way about Goku, too)

Type 1) I’M SO FUCKING DONE WITH SUPER!!! Type 2) I feel like should give up on him being useful in the series ever again… Type 3) Well maybe there hinting at him going up again, like they put so much emphasis on his family so maybe something will happen to Videl and Pan… Type 4) All of you are idiots, Gohan never wanted to be a fighter in the first place this is where his character should be. You idiots asking him to be a super badass fighter don’t know his character. Type 5) I just want him on screen! Type 6) The parts with Pan were so cute! X3 Type 7) I haven’t really been watching Super what are you guys talking about? Type 8) I just don’t care anymore, I gave up when Gohan doing anything when he was gone for the entire Champa Arc.

I think this is exactly what we all hoped to see in episode 52 of Dragon Ball Super. You can read the whole doujinshi here :

I have mixed feelings about this, and it changes my own view of Gohan, too. Like, okay, truhania is saying that Type 4 doesn’t makes sense because Gohan chose to participate in a lot of fights and argued to be trained for Cell for three years and all this stuff, and that Super isn’t in line with his character at all. Most of this is true, and these points totally change my partial leaning towards 4. I wasn’t a pure type 4, but I definitely included it as a part of my view of Gohan. That he doesn’t want to fight, so duh he’s not going to be in the fight, basically. Truhania is saying what makes Gohan amazing is that he doesn’t thrive in the fight, but that he’s willing to sacrifice lots of things, including his own life, for the things he views as important. That he’ll insist he should fight. I totally agree with this as well. I don’t think he’s so averse to fighting that he straight up won’t do it.
BUT.
I think while Goku was gone after Namek Gohan didn’t train. He focused on his studies. Yes, he jumped into the fray without a second thought, but he wasn’t preparing for the next fight. He didn’t know where his saiyan armor even was.
I’m gunna throw future Gohan in the mix of this, too - he didn’t relish in the fight like Goku did, but he viewed it as his responsibility to fight the androids. Not as his pleasure. It caused him a lot of anguish.
After Cell Gohan doesn’t train anymore until the Boudekai comes up. At the tournament, even though Gohan is older now and still buff and beautiful, Vegeta is thoroughly disgusted that Gohan’s super saiyan 2 isn’t nearly as strong as it was when he was a kid.
In Super Gohan hasn’t trained after Buu, no surprise. Par for the course at this point. But when Freiza returns Gohan jumps in the fray immediately. He even goes super saiyan... and yes, let’s address the FUCKING STUPIDEST SHIT where he can’t even maintain super saiyan for long without DYING. I can’t remember if that’s in the movie or in the show. It was dumb, so I don’t care. That’s so dumb. That’s... anyway... Gohan does it anyway, powers up like a crazy instead of going Mystic because Super doesn’t know what they’re doing with Gohan, and powers up knowing it’s too much for his body. He knows he can’t match up to Freiza and he almost dies fighting him. This is totally in line with Gohan’s character. I don’t think Super has it all wrong in that sense... except for the fact that he can’t go super saiyan without dying WTF. And after that fight Gohan is like, “Omg, I’m weak af and I couldn’t protect my family, I need to train.” This is also in line with Gohan’s character.
Goku had constant measures to tell him he still needed to prepare for the next fight. Gohan didn’t really have that all the time. He wasn’t prepared for Freiza or any dangers on Namek because they didn’t know there was danger or Freiza on Namek. He chose to go to Namek to wish Piccolo back. They didn’t know anything that dangerous would be waiting for them. If they did, they wouldn’t have gone with just Krillin and Gohan and Bulma, I can tell you that much. Goku did know there was danger, because Bulma called and was like, “HOLY FUCK SHIT IS FUCKED” so he trained on the flight over to Namek. After Namek Gohan didn’t know Freiza was coming back so he chilled, but Goku trained to get his SSJ under control so he didn’t hurt himself or others and so he could use the transformation as needed. After Cell he was in the Other World in tournaments, constantly training and matching himself to others while Gohan chilled. After all of that, I mean... well, Goku just trains. That’s what he does. In part because he’s saiyan, in part so he can compete with Vegeta. In other words, there’s always something pushing him forward. Gohan will act when pushed or when he think he should, but will be still otherwise. Yes, he fought crime in Satan City, but it was easy for him and he didn’t train to maintain his stamina or anything.
In Super, Gohan wants to join the tournament with his father but can’t because of a conference. Fair. I understand that life. I’m a biologist. I think he should have trained with Goku in the Room of Spirit and Time anyway since he had time, but... whatever. Also in Super he chooses not to take that job because he wants more time with Pan and Videl - this is totally Gohan, too. He’s had his father removed from his life because of the responsibilities he took upon himself and Gohan doesn’t want to repeat that with Pan and Videl, and Videl isn’t going to force Gohan to do that for the money so it works.
Then Gohan drops off of the face of the show in Super, and when we see him with Trunks and Pan it doesn’t seem like he’s BEEN training with Piccolo!!! WTF???
BETRAYAL.
http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/vampirediaries/images/5/58/Betrayal.gif/revision/latest?cb=20131008133456
And just... a lot of shit was unsatisfying about that episode when it comes to Gohan. He went freakin’ mystic in the Buu saga - he should still be more powerful than he was at the end of Cell imo.
Some of it was awesome - seeing him be so cute with Pan, seeing him try to scold her and she’s a baby and it’s hilarious, seeing him say he can’t discipline a baby because she’s so cute, getting Trunks ice cream, seeing him and being so silly and cute... but yeah, it was unsatisfying anyway because Gohan was lame as hell when he should be training with Piccolo and getting awesome, and of course Videl lives in her god damn apron and it’s bullshit. SO much bullshit.
Still, I think in the past when Gohan’s participated in training and fighting it was out of his own feeling of obligation (he can, so he should), and also because he really viewed his father as a hero and wanted to follow his lead. But he didn’t train when he didn’t think he had to. He’s not like Goku in that sense. Goku is training all the damn time. That’s what he does. Gohan is a family man, and he isn’t going to spend all that time on his physique and strength when he needs to make a paycheck (and academia requires a lot of on and off the clock time) and be there for his family. Goku sacrifices both of those things without a second thought just to train and to be strong, and then he’s like... sweet, I’m strong enough for the next threat kind of thing.
So yes, Super makes out Goku to be a selfish character and he kind of is and isn’t - he fights purely for pleasure, but he does view it as his responsibility to keep people safe, too. He stayed dead totally thinking that Gohan would train and keep up on his strength to do what he needed to if the next threat came. That’s not how it went down. He even wanted to leave Gotenks and Gohan to kill Buu because he said his time of protecting the Earth is over, but he ultimately takes Old Kai’s donation of his life to defeat Buu. Goku is selfish and draws out fights and tries to get the best fight out of his opponent as he can, but he’s always thinking about the safety of the planet, too, and puts it before his family in a heartbeat.
Gohan isn’t being selfish, I don’t think, when he decides to work and take care of his family. He’s done his time. He’s fought for the Earth many times over. He basically didn’t have a Dad for part of his life for the sake of the Earth. He doesn’t view protecting the Earth as his full time job like Goku does - he views being there for his family as his full time job. I think that’s totally Gohan. And I think if Gohan could prepare for the next fight because of some advance notice from the future, I think he totally would sacrifice that time with his family and his career to do that. I think he would hate being away from his family, but he would throw himself in completely like he did before the androids and come out a freakin’ badass. I also think it’s totally Gohan to recognize when he’s too weak to be helpful anymore and to start training again (though not as seriously as he did for the androids, more as like when he has free time kind of thing).
Okay, this is long af, so I’m going to end this, but... yeah. I thought of Gohan as hating the fight and resenting it before I read truhania’s post, but... after reading it I don’t think that’s true. I think he just doesn’t relish in the fight, but that he’ll do it and enjoy it if the situation calls for it.

A repost of an old fic that I fixed up.
I’ve had a severe lack of Gohan/Trunks in my life as of late, so working on this little thing was a nice way to give me the small fix I needed. This story is set in the Future Timeline (kinda).

All alone.
For the first time in his life, Trunks sat alone at the foot of Gohan’s grave. Years had passed - he had lost count of how many exactly - but he knew the visit was long overdue. It was also the first time he had been there without the company of his mother.
The headstone looked exactly as he remembered, and just the same as the others that surrounded it. Flowers had begun to bloom alongside the blades of grass, clashing with the dead color of grey and, ironically, giving it life. Knees bent to his chest, Trunks sat and reached forward, plucking a dandelion from its root. He spun the stem between his fingers, examining the white, fluffy ends and brushed them against the tip of his nose as he delicately inhaled the scent.
With a soft breath he closed his eyes and blew the seeds off, watching them scatter as the wind caught them in its grasp and they danced along the light of day like tiny, lost clouds. As Trunks looked on his mind was filled with questions that demanded answers, but there had been no one to give him what he sought.

Ridiculously Easy.
“Ridiculously easy buttermilk biscuits!” You click the link. It’s a novella about finding inner peace in suburbia. You never knew you were disturbed till now.
“Ridiculously easy green beans!” You click the link, there are twelve ingredients. None of them are green beans.
“Ridiculously easy salted pistachio caramel latte coffee cake in three easy steps!” You click the link. There are twelve steps.
“Ridiculously easy marshmallow fondant!“ You click the link. It’s another novella about suburbia, this time about the dangers of feeding chemicals to your children. You wonder when you acquired these children and worry about their eyes. They are too bright, too happy, too shining…
“Ridiculously easy evaporated milk custard!*” *Must own own cow.
“Ridiculously easy shortcake in 12 steps!” You click the link. There are no steps.
“Ridiculously easy, easy to make, easy in three minutes, easy!” It doesn’t tell you what you’re making but you’re pretty certain it shouldn’t be hissing.
“Ridiculously easy,” the article reads, “easy, it’s so easy, easy” you hear laughing. Your face hurts why does your face hurt?
“It’s so easy,” you tell you friends, your smile is not your own. You can feel your teeth growing, “so easy, you’ll hardly feel a thing!”
