Bookseller Tales #6
Not sure what to call this little segment yet, but these will be some short stories/profiles of some wonderful and not so wonderful people I’ve encountered so far behind register that have left some kind of impression on me. Thankfully the experience has been pretty positive.
1. A man who, when asked if he would like to donate to our holiday bookdrive, not only said “yes”, but when asked what price book (between $3.99-$10) he told me to pick for him. I picked out a $4.99 for him because I did not want to take advantage of him, since he was already being so generous by donating.
2. A woman my age who’s eyes lit up when I told her about the new illustrated version of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone, and excitedly exclaimed that she will definitely be coming back for it.
3. A old woman who huffed and rudely walked away, leaving all the lego boxes she was going to purchase at my register after I politely told her that we do not allow coupons to be used on lego items. This coupon would have only taken 25% off one of those boxes anyways.
4. A mother with two young boys and a little baby. At first I felt pity, because the boys were being such a handful and kept on grabbing a bunch of things that the woman had no intention of buying and she had to keep handing them to me for me to put back, but then it brought a smile to my face when the boys put a small toy on my register and happily said “This is for the baby!”
5. An aunt who bought a $100 giftcard for her nephew in college for him to use for textbooks and for personal use. That’s an awesome and loving aunt right there.
6. A girl who I briefly bonded with over Ellen DeGeneres’ new book Home. I told her I bought it for my mom for Christmas, turns out she was doing the exact same thing.
7. A dad who saw the $50 figurine of Boba Fett behind the counter, and still decided to purchase it for his young son as a Christmas present because he knew it was his favorite Star Wars character and that he’d love it.
8. A mother and daughter who liked me because I talk to myself and objects, and I liked them for liking that about me.
I’m grateful that even around the holidays, the customers have been so patient with me when I need to call for assistance. I’m still learning things and always feel bad for having to make them wait but they’ve all been great so far.

Currently Reading:
The Golden Yarn by Cornelia Funke
(aka the third book in the Mirrorworld series and what was originally going to called Heartless)
I’m not feeling too well so I’m not sure how far I’ll get with this today, but you can bet your ass that I’m starting the new year off with my woman Cornelia!
Oh Mirrorworld, it’s been so long, I’m excited to be visiting you again.

Bookseller Tales #5
When I was first exposed to the act of stripping a book (stripping a book of its cover in order to be recycled as a result of lack of sales, and why yes I did just take that description from wikipedia), you can bet I was horrified.
My thoughts before book stripping: “I get that this is one of the cheesy romance novels that are probably older than me but I can’t! This goes against all my book morals!”
Minutes after: “Oh hey this is super therapeutic”

Book Review: The Red Pyramid

Author: Rick Riordan
Rating: 3/5 stars; Liked it
~~~~~~
Whew, that took forever. I started this at the beginning of the month and didn't finish it until now.
I am disappointed to say that even though I'm giving this three stars, I didn't enjoy it as much as Riordan's other series (I've pretty much given all his other books 5 star ratings), but there may be other reasons for that. I was definitely in a reading slump this month. I did start getting into this towards the end, so I believe that I will enjoy this more after seeing Carter and Sadie start to grow more.
Anyways what can I say about this?:
-Carter and Sadie are very different from Riordan's other characters. I read Magnus Chase before this and thought that those characters were different, Carter and Sadie are totally different personality wise from any of the other main characters. And I thought that the the sibling relationship was done well and nice to see since Riordan doesn't really do siblings (besides Nico/Bianca/Hazel).
- I want to know more about Zia. She's one of the few strong side characters and I felt like we didn't see enough of her yet. Seeing how she is at the moment, I would not be surprised to see her again soon and having a big role.
-Also want more interactions with the Gods. The only one we really got was Bast and she was cool as hell, love her to death. Can we please have Anubis become a main character? I'm already in love.
-I am a little iffy on the narration. I don't mind the switching between narrators, it's more of the moments when they say things to each other off to the side, reminding us that this is actually a recording. It's just strange and breaks from the flow of the story.
So from the looks of it, I want MORE. I haven't picked up the other two books yet, but will do that soon and hopefully I won't be in such a slump when I get around to them.
Day 17: Family
My Christmas presents for my parents! Mom asked for The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto and dad asked for The Girl On The Train, but I also threw in extras for both of them. Home for my mom because she likes Ellen and Interior Design, and Strip Tease for dad because he likes Carl Hiaasen
Day 16: Favorite Classic
I actually don’t own a physical copy of this anymore, which is a shame. I first read this when I was like 9 and have read it a few times since then. Super lovely.
Not sure how I feel about Goodreads new update. I quite enjoy the minimalist color choices, but the font is really throwing me for a loop. Maybe a number size bigger would be good.
