Did you hear about bandcamp supposedly using and/or training ai now? :(
Okay SO. I looked into this because no I didnt. And the only thing I found about it was a reddit thread from a year ago claiming this because of the wording of the terms of service.
But honestly, I agree with one of the other comments in there that. While the TOS would allow for them to scrape music for ai. It doesnt mean they actually are and the more likely case is that their lawyers just wrote some very broad terms for them because 1) easier and 2) it allows their clients more freedom.
If someone can find something more recent or from a more reliable source than someone yelling about it on reddit, that would be great

Stop using paper towels
Paper towels have always been a weakness for me because they are incredibly convenient, but I have significantly reduced the number I use and am working on cutting back even more.  Paper towels are bad for the environment in many ways.  Unless you use 100% recycled paper towels, trees are cut to manufacture the towels.  Bleach and other chemicals are used to process and whiten the paper towels.  Paper towels create a significant volume of waste when discarded, and then degrade to form methane, a powerful green house gas, in the landfills.  Some of my information sources say that using recycled paper towels is only slightly better, but other sources point out recycled paper uses significantly less water and doesn’t result in additional deforestation.  So, how do we remove paper towels from our lives?  The attached article gives some good ideas for reducing paper towel use at home.  Here are some additional thoughts:
When I do use a paper towel, I generally tear off a small piece, just enough to do the job, and save the rest of the sheet for another use.  I can frequently use a single towel for several tasks.
Old T-shirts and towels are very useful for replacing paper towels.  Almost any absorbent rag will work.
Paper towels are useful for absorbing greasy or oily substances and you may want to continue using them sometimes.  If you use a rag, be aware that a rag soaked in grease should not be dried in a clothes dryer after laundering.  It’s a fire safety concern.
Public restrooms frequently offer paper towels as the only hand drying option.  Several years ago, I saw a video that showed how to dry your hands using only one paper towel.  The secret is shaking the excess water off your hands into the sink before you grab the towel.  Start with one paper towel and only take a second one if your hands are not dry.

Hi! Kinda new to interacting on Tumblr but I wanted to ask to anyone who knows, what college programs aligns with punk values, as well as what careers?
I was thinking International Law and Politics, maybe Political Action and Public Policy but I’m not sure
Oh there are so many paths I want to take while answering this, but I’ll try to keep it simple, even though I could probably write a few pages of an essay on this.
Honest, I feel like *any* major could align with punk values if applied correctly. Of course law and politics is a very direct way to go head to head with problems.
But for an example, I majored in chemistry. There are so many paths a chemist could go down that align with punk. Currently, I work at a company that makes workplace safety devices. That goes right along with workers rights and environmental protection. Other chemists work directly with the environment, I know a guy who is a chemist who got a law degree too and with that combo, you can do a LOT.
But even something as out there as a religious studies degree. For religious punks out there (self included) a lot of religious values and punk values align. Hell, Jesus flipped tables on people when necessary. And many religious organizations put together community programs.
English - writing and spreading information
History - gotta know it and share it to not relive it
Bio/med - taking care of people
Art - need I say more
The only major I cant think of something for is math. But math is EXTREMELY important for STEM fields, soooooo, still kinda need it.

My friends and I who live close together now have regular quarterly "council meetings" where we meet together in one place (usually our apartment but sometimes coffee shops) and discuss upcoming plans for the next couple months including any local events we want to go to, vacations, projects we want help on, and any financial or family endeavors we should all be in the know about. And like yeah, I know this is a super autistic thing to do (more than half of us are autistic) but I extremely, HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend regular council meetings for yourself and friends if you feel like sometimes life can be chaotic. We spend a couple hours just chatting and hammering down plans so we can plan around each other's engagements and also carve out time where we can have productive and fulfilling experiences together.

from one chronically anxious person to another: the world is not going to go up in flames. What happens will be more slow, more bureaucratic, more boring. There is no catastrophe to end all catastrophes, no rapture, no sudden end. You can't give into the call of the void, because there is no void. So you just have to do the work to make tomorrow a better place, anyway. Because that's how it gets better.

i wish ppl on this website, and within leftist circles in general, were a little less gung ho about making jokes or statements like "billionaires arent people" "nazis arent people" "police arent people"
there is no level of evil where a human stops being a human. if you decide to kill them for their crimes, then you are killing a human. and sometimes that is justified! oil execs and war profiteers have destroyed countless lives in service of their own sick greed, and given the chance to enact that same violence on them, id probably pop their heads like a pimple.
but it is important that we do not shy away from the reality of that choice. it is a human life that is being ended. a person with interiority, feelings, family.
if we stop considering any group as people, even a group defined by their own evil actions, then we are drawing a line to divide society into persons and non-persons, and stating that those non-persons do not deserve to live.
i hope i dont need to explain why that is a dangerous position to take.
these people and all of their evil, their greed, their hatred, are just as much a part of humanity as art, culture, language, food. they are a part of us that has grown malignant and cancerous, and like a cancer, they must be excised for the sake of the whole--but they are still a part of us, made of the same stuff as us, down to their cores.
evil humans are still humans.

Punk 101: A History of Battle Jackets
Battle Jackets have a long and interesting history in general, not limited only to punk. Today we see them as a reflection of the wearer, they are a form of self expression and affiliation.
Battle jackets can trace their origins back to WWII American pilots who would decorate their flight suits and bomber jackets with their squadron's insignia patches. They were jackets that allowed pilots to easily recognize each other and instilled a sense of pride and community in their owners. This is also where the term 'battle jacket' comes from.

After the war was over, pilots returned home and many found joy in the speed and excitement of motorcycles. Biker clubs were formed, and thus, biker culture as well. Pilots often used their bomber jackets while riding because of the protection they offered, though the sleeves were usually removed due to how they restricted movement. Jackets got decorated with club/gang logos to represent their wearer's affiliation, much like the insignia patches. As biker clubs grew, members without a pilot history often used leather or denim jackets to showcase their affiliations. There is a LOT more to biker jacket history, but this is what's really relevant to punk jackets.
Tumblr media
In the 60s, two different cultures evolved in the UK. The first is The Mods, known for listening to modern jazz and riding scooters (supposedly their name comes from the modern jazz thing. I would not have been surprised if it was from 'modification' considering the seeming obsession to keep adding mirrors and lights to their scooters). The other group was The Rockers who were known for listening to 50s rock and riding motorcycles. While the groups strongly disliked each other, they both decorated their jackets in ways that influenced punk's jacket scene. The Mods often added pictures, paintings, and patches to theirs, while The Rockers were more likely to be seen sporting spikes and studs. (Not to say that those things were strictly limited to each side - just what was more common)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The following decade (the 70s), the two branches came together as various music subgenres collided and formed. Punk was among the genres formed, and the culture surrounding it was one of the first non-gang or club related groups to decorate their jackets. Taking influence from both The Mods and The Rockers, the characteristic punk look was formed, and intended to be a Fuck You to societal norms. In the earliest days, punk jackets were mostly covered in band patches, much like modern heavy metal jackets. As punk evolved into what we know it as today, with notes of anti-establishment and anarchy, it became more common to see political patches right along side the band ones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today's jackets are a personal statement. the bands you like, your interests, political statements. They are a symbol of individuality and rebellion against society. They are a physical representation of YOU and your history with punk culture. This is why it is so important within punk culture to make your own jacket or have someone help who can customize it to you. You are not a generic human off the rack, you have lived a life, had your own battles, have your own personality, and have your own history. A premade, mass produced jacket won't showcase any of that or really truly represent the individuality of 'you'.
