Every year, I try to have something profound to leave you with as we say farewell to the past year and head off into the next. This year, I've got nothing. But, I will say this to you...

No matter what has happened,

No matter what we've lost,

No matter the pain we've suffered, the struggles we've met, the heartache we've faced,

We've made it through another year.

We did not give up surviving.

We did not surrender to the unfortunate.

We did not roll over and let the ugliness and pain of this year bury us in the waiting ground.

We made it. Here's to us.

Every girl has had the experience where a creepy guy asks for our number and we don’t want to give it to him, but we also don’t want to get gutted in a back alley. “Give him a fake number!” I hear you call, okay and then he says “okay let me call you real quick!” Because they are learning. “Give them your number and then block them!” Okay and then they can plug it into something like Spokeo, pay $10 and know everything about you. So what do you do?

First pick a fake name, I use Jessica, then download the Google Voice app, hook it up to your email, pick a number, and set up a fake greeting with your fake name. You can set it to ring your actual phone like a normal call or text but they don’t have real info on you.

Go forth and don’t get murdered, ladies!

listen to yourself and watch your language. instead of saying “sorry for ranting”, say “thank you for listening to me”. instead of saying “sorry that i am overemotional”, say “thank you for trying to understand something difficult”. instead of saying “sorry if i am a burden”, say “thank you for the time and energy you invest in our friendship”. good things will come when you realize you are not an apology.

-When I told the army doctor that sometimes my period pains make me unable to function for days, he didn’t even write that down. -When I told my dad “don’t touch me, I’m in pain” he backed down for a moment until my mom told him “she’s on her period”. Then he just laughed. -When I told my teacher before a big test that I was unable to do it because I was in extreme pain and could barely move at all, she said I was making up excuses and that it wasn’t a real reason not to do the test.  -Wenever I tell someone about how different I feel during my period emotionally they say I’m just “making up drama”.  We need to start treating people on their periods like actual human beings in pain. 

-The fact that it occurs monthly doesn’t make the pain less real. It should be treated seriously and with respect. -The fact that the hormones effect the emotions doesn’t make your sadness less painful or the anger less valid or that terrible feeling of being lost less terrifying. Guess what? Hormones affect everyone. Feelings aren’t always rational. It should be also treated seriously and with respect.

Please stop mocking people with periods. Please stop dismissing us. Please stop violating our boundries. Please respect people with periods.

Give me female characters who are deeply flawed. Who are all sharp edges and mean words. Who love deeply but don’t know how to show it.

Give me female characters who walk the battlefield the way they would a runway. Who wield swords and magic. Who fight the wars along side men.

Give me female characters who weaponize their sexuality. Who use it to get what they want. Who are secure with who they are.

Give me female characters who are beloved for the same traits that male characters are worshipped for.
