I’m gonna be so real, I thought in the episode that comment was a joking reference to the Greek poet and originator of the terms sapphic and lesbian, Sappho from Lesbos. Yes her name is Sappho and yes she’s from an actual real island called Lesbos. I’ve never heard it referred to as a derogatory term, but I have read and heard about Sappho and the island she came from. Like, I’m not trying to be flippant or meme on this situation, I’m just saying this was my full train of thought

I'm super aware of Sappho, she's my favourite poet! It's very true that the term lesbian came from the Isle of Lesbos and within that context is a very okay word to use.

The problems arise because bigots started flipping the word onto lesbians with malicious intent. Through that hate and ignorance, the word's meaning is now tied to something negative. It's similar to the term Queer. It's original meaning is innocent, but it's when people started using it against our community that it became a very hateful slur. When it is reclaimed, there's no issue with either of these words. But that's the thing, Noah is not a lesbian and therefore can't decide what that word means when he uses it, especially in the context of how he used it. I interpret it was meant to be a joke of feigned ignorance/oblivion by his character and obviously fell flat.

Even if it's not something you are directly familiar with, people still get called l*sbos in this day and age, and not in a fun way. Whether it's a slur or not, if a lesbian feels harmed or uncomfortable by him using that word, I say we listen and respect that. <3

what the HELL did Noah do??? I am a very new Smosh fan and while Noah is not my favorite, I have engaged with content that he’s in and I haven’t seen anything problematic. Am I missing something???

(Also what’s up with Keith? I’ve heard some hate against him too and im just curious.)

No pressure if you don’t want to explain but I’m truly just curious— I really don’t know what happened. Have I just not consumed the problematic content?

Smosh is becoming one of my comfort channels, and I thought they were involved in Creators for Palestine, and I just want to know if they’re problematic :(

Hey no worries! I'm also relatively new and only learnt a lot of this second hand after joining more of the smosh fandom spaces, so I can't provide a lot of context or evidence.

The biggest thing going on right now is that in the members release of the latest spud hut episode, Noah improvd a moment where he called Amanda and Angela's characters L*sbos. He is a cishet man and therefore that should not be a word in his vocabulary. A few hours later, it was cut from the episode with no acknowledgement by anyone from smosh. We're worried that these issues aren't being taken seriously by the company because whether or not anyone was aware of the connotations of the term, an inclusive public face like smosh should do their research and put in effort to be sensitive and respectful, rather than try to act like nothing happened.

This isn't the only incident though, more like a nail in the coffin. Noah has said unfavorable things about Palestinians like calling them names and also mentioning he's proud that his family took part in their conflict(?) I'm not 100% on this statement so please take that with a grain of salt. Anyone who can clarify or correct me, feel free to comment.

Keith made and shared jokes about the diddy situation on his instagram story and also has very questionable opinions on cheating according to an episode of agree to disagree on smosh pit.

None of these things have ever been formally addressed to my knowledge. A lot of smosh fans don't engage with videos they're in and try to voice their concerns in comment sections but it seems like it's falling on deaf ears unfortunately.

Please don't let this stop you from enjoying other content smosh puts out though! I personally skip over Noah & Keith appearances for the most part safe for series like bit city, spud hut (although I couldn't bring myself to watch todays episode) or my favourite game on the games channel for example. There are a lot of people that make smosh what it is and all we're asking for is more clarity, respect and better judgement going forward. The newest episode of the spud hut sitcom was just released and to say I'm disappointed in smosh is a huge understatement.

for those unaware, the video originally included a clip of N*ah saying a homophobic slur in a scene, one aimed at the lesbian community. the clip has now been edited out, but being a member, i got the video 24 hours before the public saw it before they got rid of it. N*ahs continuous problematic behavior continues to be ignored by smosh, and being this is a completely improvised show- he chose to say the slur, and they chose to keep it in. i will include the clip, but just know that that's what it contains.

i will not be clipping anything from this episode, and i encourage everyone to leave a comment on the video letting smosh know we do not appreciate the continuous "sweeping under the rug" strategy they keep doing on behalf of N*ahs (and other cast members') behavior, as well as continuing to cast him in videos despite amble backlash.

Hey so, we're all agreeing that we're not letting them get away with this right? It's horrible how we've had to just accept bs every few months because one of these assholes has to say/do something gross with no repurcussions. But this really crosses the line for me, people are way too desensitized to derogatory language, especially against women.

It also hurts to know no one else in the room, crew or cast a-like, or anyone who worked on post production said anything about it and it flew under the radar.
