Pet Safe Scoopfree Automatic Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box
Our Rating: (5/5)
This is a self-cleaning, automatic waste removal litter box that’s designed to make the cat owner’s life a little easier. This means no more constant scooping, no foul odors, and no inappropriate eliminating due to a dirty litter box. This litter box requires the use of crystal litter, which works to absorb the urine while dehydrating solid waste, significantly cutting down on odors. The low-tracking crystals will also cut down on messy floors. The crystals will not stick to your cat’s paws like traditional litter. Additionally, the included disposable trays feature a plastic lining that will prevent leaks. Cleaning out this box is simple, just remove the disposable tray and toss it in the trash.
Pros
Self-cleaning
Crystals absorb odors
Litter will not stick to a cat’s paws.
Disposable trays
Cons
Ongoing cost of disposable trays
Litter is pricy
Does not come with a cover
Conclusion
This automatic litter box will help to keep your home smelling fresh by immediately raking the litter and removing any waste, which will significantly cut down on litter box odors. However, the cat owner on a budget will need to take into consideration the high price of the litter and the ongoing costs of the disposable trays. Additionally, the box doesn’t come with a cover, which may cause some cats to avoid using the litter box, especially if it’s placed in a high traffic area.

Omega Paw EL-RA20-1 Roll N Clean Litter Box
Our Rating: (4.5/5)
This model should not be confused with an automatic self-cleaning litter box. Instead, it just allows the user to remove the waste by basically rolling the litter box over. Additionally, the built-in litter step will catch any litter that sticks to your pet’s feet, which will cut down on the amount of litter that’s tracked all over the home. The sifting grill is made out of a durable plastic and will sift the waste from the litter as the box is rolled onto its top, then rolled back into an upright position. The box also comes with a lid, which will give much-needed privacy during use and will make them feel more secure when using their litter box. This is definitely a unique self-cleaning litter box, and one that may be a more affordable option compared to high priced electric models.
Pros
Self-cleaning design
Includes grate that sifts out waste
Litter lift step cuts down on litter that’s tracked around the home
Includes cover
Cons
Box can be difficult to clean out
Conclusion
This model will help to cut down on odors, just as long as the cat owner takes care of any waste once a cat uses the box. The box is rolled over, in order to cause the waste and litter to go through the built-in grate. When the box is placed back into an upright position, the litter will be clean and the waste is kept in a bottom compartment until emptied. Easy to use, large, durable, and designed for cats of all sizes, this model is a great buy for both single and multi-cat households.

Purina Tidy Cats Litter Box System
Our Rating: (4.5/5)
This is a simple all in one system that’s easy to maintain. The included ammonia blocker will prevent ammonia related odors for a period of one week. This box uses anti-tracking pellets instead of traditional litter. The pellets work by dehydrating waste and will minimize litter tracking by as much as ninety-nine percent. The pellets will wick away and repel urine, keeping the box itself dry. The urine will pass through a grated tray down to the litter absorbent pads waiting in the bottom tray. The tray is removable so you can simply empty it to get rid of the waste.
Pros
Includes cover
Prevents odors for up to one week
Filtering system removes waste from the box to a tray below
No scooping required
Cons
Not all cats will like the pellet litter
Litter is expensive
Conclusion
Cats are very particular when it comes to their litter boxes. Because of this, not all cats will use the litter box because they may not like how the pellets feel under their feet. This can be a major problem, since the cat will refuse to use the litter box and will inappropriately eliminate in the home. In cases such as this, make sure you still have their regular litter box on hand, at least until the cat adjusts to using the new litter box. This system does an excellent job of eliminating odors and keeping the home smelling fresh thanks to the innovative litter grate design that instantly removes waste from the main area.

Catit Regular Magic Blue Litter Box
Our Rating: (4.5/5)
This model features a large cover that’s designed to give cats the privacy many prefer during litter box use. The box itself features an ergonomic design that provides improved air filtration in order to prevent ammonia related odors. This model also comes with a cartridge set that’s designed to absorb one hundred percent of odors, neutralizing gases instantly. This model is perfect for cats of all sizes and will not move or tip over, even with larger cats.
Pros
Can use any type of litter
Includes filter cartridges that neutralize odor
Perfect for cats of all sizes
Low price
Cons
Must be washed with soap and water weekly to prevent odors
Conclusion
This is a fairly basic model, one that most cat owners will love, due to the large design that will allow even larger felines to easily use their box, without tipping it over. This model can use any type of litter and comes with filter cartridges designed to cut down on odors.

Petmate Litter Pan
Our Rating: (4/5)
This is a pretty basic open top litter box the kind most pet owners are familiar with. What’s great about this style is that it’s very affordable, so pet owners with several cats can afford to purchase one litter box per cat. This can help to eliminate odors and cut down on fights and inappropriate elimination. This box doesn’t come with a cover. Additionally, if the owner doesn’t add enough litter or if the cat is over ten pounds, then this type of box can flip over. This box can use any type of litter, which will definitely be a plus for all buyers. The litter box should be emptied out and washed with hot soapy water since the ammonia in the urine can be absorbed by the plastic, causing unwanted odors. This box is as basic as it gets, but it will work great for the pet owner on a budget and in multi-cat households.
Pros
Low price
Durable
Can use any type of litter
Available in four size options
Cons
Can tip over
Must be washed out weekly to minimize odors
Conclusion
This very basic style of litter box is available in four size options. It’s reasonably priced so even cat owners on a budget can afford to buy one box per cat to help cut down on odors and inappropriate elimination. The big drawback for this style is the lack of a cover, which can cause some cats to avoid using the litter box, especially if the box is placed in a noisy part of the home. Additionally, larger felines can easily tip this type of litter box over, especially if the owner doesn’t fill it with enough litter. Overall, while it takes more care and requires some elbow grease to clean these boxes out, this type of box will work for most cats and is a great choice for multi-cat households.

Cat Litter Box Buyer’s Guide
As you’re shopping around online looking for a new litter box, you may think that most boxes are the same. Unfortunately, not all litter boxes are created equal. A cat can be very particular about the depth, shape, and size of a litter box. If the cat doesn’t like their litter box they will not use it. Of course, this can lead to accidents around the home, and other undesired behaviors. This buyer’s guide will go over the features to look for that can help you ensure you purchase a litter box your cat will love and use consistently.
Size
The size of the litter box will be very important. A box that is too small can make it uncomfortable for a cat to use. Ideally, it should be large enough that they can easily turn around in it. However, a box that’s too large can also make it difficult for smaller cats to get in and out of. Larger cats will also run into issues if they’re using a standard size litter box and cannot fit inside the box properly. If the box is too small, the cat will often hang their rear end over the side, and inappropriately eliminate on the floor. To avoid this, make sure that you measure your pet and pay close attention to the dimensions of each model.
Number of Litter Boxes
Only having one litter box in a multi-cat household is a common mistake many cat owners make. Ideally, you will need to use one litter box per cat plus an additional litter box. This means if you have three cats in the home, you will need to purchase four litter boxes. Why? Most cats are very clean and will refuse to use a litter box that is dirty. If you don’t have the time to constantly stand by a litter box and scoop it out throughout the day, then you need to purchase multiple litter boxes for your home. Cats may also refuse to use a litter box if they smell that another cat has used it in the past.
Depth
Another factor you’ll want to consider is the depth of the box. A box that has sides that are too high can make it difficult for kittens and seniors who have joint problems, to use the litter box. If the sides of the box are too low, then you’ll often find that litter has been kicked out all over the floor. If your cat doesn’t routinely spray or kick out litter, then a model with walls that are 5 to 7 inches will work well. If you do have a litter kicker or sprayer on your hands, then search for a model that has walls that are around 8 to 10 inches tall.
If you have a senior cat who has mobility issues or a young kitten, then look for a box that has walls that are around 2 and 1/2 inches up to 3 and 1/2 inches tall. At this height, the wall should be low enough to make it easy for a cat to get in and out of the box, but the height is just tall enough to prevent litter from spilling out onto the floor.
Types of Litter Boxes
There are many different styles and shapes of litter boxes available to choose from. The style you choose should be based on the size of your cat, their personality, and how messy they are when they use their litter box. Below, I’ll go over the different style options available.
Open Top/Traditional
This is one of the most common and affordable options available. Essentially this style of litter box consists of a rectangular box with walls that are moderately high. This is usually the type most new pet owners will go for in the beginning, until they notice the cat is tipping over the box or the walls are not high enough to contain litter. These boxes are often the most affordable option and are very easy to replace. They can be a good option for cat owners on a tight budget or a multiple cat household.
Hidden
If you have a litter box placed in a common space in the home, then choosing a hidden style litter box can be a great option since these boxes are designed to blend into their surroundings. Many models are designed to look like pieces of furniture such as end tables or planters. Unfortunately, these litter boxes are also pretty pricey, but if you don’t want your cat’s litter box out in plain sight, then they’re a great option.
Covered Litter Boxes
Choosing between a covered and uncovered litter box can be difficult. Why? Basically, you won’t know whether or not your cat prefers an uncovered or covered litter box until you use one. If you have dogs in the home, or the home environment is just naturally loud and chaotic, then your cat may appreciate the privacy that a covered litter box provides. Additionally, a covered box will also prevent litter from getting everywhere. However, if your cat does not like the cover, and they feel trapped when they use their litter box, then they will avoid using it at all costs. If you want to take the chance and purchase a covered model, you can simply leave the cover off if your cat doesn’t like it, however a covered model is much more expensive than a traditional litter box.
Self-Cleaning
Whether or not a self-cleaning litter box is a good idea is debatable. Some cat owners swear by them, while others claim that these litter boxes can cause issues with their cat using their box regularly, due to some models switching on when the cat is still in the litter box. There are dozens of top-of-the-line self-cleaning models on the market to choose from. These boxes can be a great choice for pet owners who don’t have time to scoop out their litter box throughout the day. Additionally, the boxes do an excellent job of cutting down on odors. These boxes come with an automatic scooper that will sift out waste, pushing it into a removable tray below the surface. The trays need to be emptied out a few times a week or more, depending on how many cats use the box.
Litter
For the most part, you can use any type of litter for litter boxes, choosing the right type based on your cat’s preference. However, the exception here is with self-cleaning litter boxes. These boxes usually require you to use a certain type of crystal litter. The litter is often pricier than basic clumping litter, however, it does a better job of retaining odors. If you’re on a tight budget and considering purchasing a self-cleaning model, keep this extra expense in mind before you buy.
Price
Most types of litter boxes are very affordable. However, hidden litter boxes and self-cleaning litter boxes can be very pricey, with a cost that ranges from $100 up to $300. Standard litter boxes can cost anywhere from $10 up to $40. Hidden litter boxes and self-cleaning models do not have to be replaced as often as standard litter boxes do.
Care and Maintenance
All types of cat litter boxes will need to be properly cleaned and maintained, including self-cleaning models. Cat urine can have a very potent smell to it and it’s often absorbed into the material of the litter box, so even if the box has been scooped out an odor will still linger. Because of this, I recommend cleaning out your litter box using soap and water at least once a week. If you have multiple cats in the home, then you need to wash out the litter boxes more often. All of the models in my lineup can easily be cleaned using basic dish soap, warm water, and a scrubbing pad. Remember, many cats will refuse to use their litter box if the litter is dirty or if the scent is too strong. Proper upkeep and regular scooping will help to encourage your pet to use a litter box consistently.
How to Improve Your Cat’s Litter Box
One of the biggest downsides of owning a cat is having to deal with their litter box. Additionally, cat owners must find ways to prevent their home from smelling like one, keep the floor around the litter box clean, and make sure that their cats are using their litter box regularly. Below you will find some great tips that will help to keep your cat’s litter box smelling fresh, clean, and make it more welcoming for your cat.
Where you place the litter box will have a big impact on your cat’s comfort level and how often they use it. A box should be kept out of sight. This will help to improve your cat’s sense of security. The litter box should always be placed in a quiet space that is easily accessible for cats and it should not be kept close to their water or food. Cats will instinctively avoid eliminating close to where they eat.
Even if you live in a small home, try to place the box further away from any loud appliances.
You can purchase several different textures and types of litter from silica gel and clay to biodegradable. If your cat is refusing to use their litter box, try changing the type of litter they use gradually until you find a type that your cat likes. If you’re not able to find a type of litter your cat is willing to step on then you can also try sand. The average feline has 67 million scent receptors. A human being only has 5 million scent receptors. Because your cat has a very sensitive sense of smell, try sticking with an unscented litter. A perfumed litter may be very unappealing for your cat and one of the reasons they refuse to use their litter box.
Since you will not be using scented litter, you can keep the area around the box smelling fresh and clean by using just a little baking soda sprinkled on the bottom of the litter box placed before the litter. Try to do a little experimenting and find a good balance between just the right amount of baking soda and litter in order to control bad odors. Try to avoid using too much baking soda since this can also offend a cat’s sense of smell.
Regardless of how well you clean and maintain your cat’s litter box it will get worn down from regular use. A litter box scooper and a cat’s nails can scrape the plastic bottom of the box and leave behind small scratches that can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Because of this, it’s important that you purchase a new litter box every year. When replacing the litter box try to get one that’s similar in appearance and size to what your cat is used to.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes Really Work?
Yes, but you’ll still have to clean the box out yourself, from time to time. The automatic scooper will remove clumped litter and feces, but you will need to clean out the interior of the box with soap and water once a week in order to help cut down on odors.
Where Should I Place a Litter Box?
Placing a litter box in a bathroom can be a great idea, just as long as you keep the bathroom door open at all times and avoid flushing the toilet when the cat is in the bathroom. Some people choose the laundry room as well, but this may or not work since some cats will become startled when the washer or dryer is in use or when a buzzer goes off. Ideally, the box should be placed in a quiet spot in the home, with low foot traffic, and far away from their food and water.
Can Cats Find a Litter Box if you Move it?
Most cats will use their keen sense of smell to locate their litter box, if you’ve moved it to a different room in the home. However, if your cat doesn’t like the new litter box spot, they may return to the old space and eliminate there. Pet owners recommend having two litter boxes and placing one in the new location. You can allow your cat to use both spots until they become used to the new location.
How far Away Should cat Food be Kept from a Litter box?
If possible, always avoid placing your cat’s food and water dishes in the same room as their litter box. If you don’t have much room to work with in the home, then try to place their litter box in one corner of the room and their food and water dishes in the corner that’s the farthest away from their litter box.
Do Cats Need Access to Their Litter box at Night?
Yes. Cats are nocturnal and are awake the majority of the night. Make sure you clean out their litter box before you head to bed to ensure it’s clean and ready for them to use upon waking.
Final Thoughts
The best cat litter box for your pet should be easy to clean, will feature a sturdy design, and will be large enough and tall enough to accommodate your specific cat. As you can see, there are many different styles and types to choose from, with pros and cons that come with each type. Before you buy a new litter box for your cat, you should do your homework and look for a model that will suit your pet’s needs, whether they prefer privacy while they go, they’re very picky and must have a clean litter box to use at all times, or you have a large breed cat that needs more space than the average tabby. I hope this buyer’s guide and the products I’ve included here can help you narrow in on the perfect model for your feline in order to cut down on accidents in the home, and keep your home looking and smelling great.

Dog Food for Skin Allergies Buyer’s Guide
Having a pet with chronic allergies can be very frustrating for the owner and uncomfortable and even painful at times for the pet. A dog can be allergic to a wide range of ingredients commonly found in pet food, which can make pinpointing the allergen seem almost impossible.
An allergy is basically an immune response to an external stimulant. When a type of foreign substance makes its way into the body, the immune system will attack the substance in order to attempt to keep the body healthy. An allergy is the immune system’s overreaction to a substance. This is manifested by skin issues in pets who are allergic to an ingredient in their dog food.
It may seem like an allergy happened suddenly, but it’s actually the result of being exposed to a certain stimulant for a long period of time. This type of long-term exposure to a certain allergen will cause immune distress, causing it to flag the allergen as a serious threat. This triggers an allergic reaction.
A dog can develop an allergy over time. While your dog may not have been allergic to beef during their first couple of years of life, this lengthy exposure to the offending allergen will begin to cause an allergic response, which is often presented in the form of a skin rash.
Symptoms of Dog Skin Allergies
A skin allergy in a dog is referred to as allergic dermatitis. This involves irritation or inflammation of the skin. Symptoms can vary from pet to pet and can be impacted by the severity of the allergy. For the most part, skin allergies often present themselves with the following symptoms:
Excessive licking
Itching
Chewing or gnawing at the skin
Itchy ears
Hair loss
Inflamed, red skin
Rashes
Swollen paws or swollen face
How to Determine the Cause of a Skin Allergy
In order to get to the root of the problem, make an appointment with your vet. Your vet will examine your pet and confirm whether or not you’re dealing with a dog food allergy. Of course, this won’t be the end of treatment. Now, you’ll need to find out what type of food your dog is allergic to. Some dogs are allergic to grains, however, more commonly, dogs are allergic to the protein source in their dog food.
You’ll need to first try an elimination diet before you switch to a regular dry dog food. An elimination diet is fairly simple both to make and in the types of ingredients found in the diet. The goal is to easily identify what food is triggering an allergic response in your dog.
Certain ingredients found in commercial foods can cause an allergic reaction. The key now is to uncover what ingredients your dog is not able to tolerate. For many dogs, the most common culprits include protein, sugar beet pulp, rice, soy, corn, and wheat, in addition to by-products, fillers, and preservatives.
Many pets have an issue with lamb, which can result in hot spots and other related coat and skin problems. Beef and chicken can also be triggers and can cause mild to severe skin issues.
Better choices include turkey and duck.
Food allergies are entirely specific to an animal, which is why it’s so important to ensure the food you feed your pet is labeled as allergen-free, non-allergic, or hypoallergenic. There’s no such thing as a universal dog diet. The same diet that works for two of your dogs may be a poor choice for your third dog.
Over time, even feeding your pet a low-quality pet food can end up depleting their immune system over time since it’s loaded with toxins and fillers that place a major burden on a dog’s immune system and organs. The food may also lack vital nutrients, which can lead to a number of health issues.
Is it Really a Food Allergy?
You may have come across articles online that discuss food allergies and how they can impact a pet’s health, primarily the condition of their skin. However, for some dogs, food allergies don’t have a major Impact. If your dog has diarrhea or itchy skin, then there may be something else behind it. If you feel that your dog may have some type of allergy, you may have noticed that your pet sneezes a lot, they have itchy ears, they have a rash all over their body, or they may have diarrhea, or they vomit often. For others, the skin is inflamed and red, their ear flaps swell, as do their eyelids and lips. Your dog may also have excessive gas and may spend most of their time over-grooming. Food allergies only affect one out of ten pets. So, how do you know if it’s really a food allergy? Using the elimination diet is the best way to determine whether or not your pet is suffering from a food allergy or if there’s an underlying health condition that you should be concerned about.
Elimination Diet
Before you can choose the best dog food for skin allergies, you have to find out what’s causing the skin allergies. For most pet owners, eliminating the high-risk ingredients such as chicken, beef, rice, soy, corn, and wheat, can be enough to manage pet food allergies. In other cases, all glutinous grains must be removed from the dog’s diet. This includes treats. This can often bring about great results.
An elimination diet is often needed to uncover the cause of a pet’s allergic reaction. This will involve feeding the pet a very simplified diet for several weeks. This can include millet and bison, or sweet potatoes and fish, until the allergies subside. Next, you will need to add more ingredients to the food, gradually, and monitor for any signs of food intolerance, such as diarrhea and itching.
You’ll need to keep a record of how your dog responds to each type of ingredient, so you can easily identify a pattern.
Week 1: Begin by feeding your dog a diet of fifty percent cooked mashed sweet potatoes and fifty percent ground turkey. You may notice some reduction in diarrhea and itching during this time.
Week 2: If the diarrhea and itching persists, then replace the turkey with cooked bison or ground beef. If their condition is improving, then you can replace a portion of the sweet potatoes with greens such as parsley and kale.
Week 3: If the diarrhea or itching persists, then you can replace the beef with white fish such as haddock or cod, then replace the sweet potato with a green veggie such as kale, broccoli, or celery. If the condition is improving, then replace a portion of the sweet potato and greens with some pureed melon, chopped bananas, or another type of soft fruit. The fruit should make up approximately five percent of their total diet.
Week 4: If the diarrhea and itching continues then you may need to turn to lab-based testing in order to accurately determine which foods are causing an allergic reaction in your dog. If you want to feed grains to your dog, seeds such as millet or quinoa, or grains that are gluten-free such as oats, are the best choices.
If the conditions are continuing to improve, then you can continue to add new food every few days and monitor them closely, looking for an allergic response.
If a recurrence or flareup occurs at some point, this can indicate that the newest ingredient that has been added to your dog’s diet is the culprit. You will need to remove any ingredients that have been recently introduced for that week and try something else. Some dogs may be intolerant of certain ingredients such as flaxseed, alfalfa, or eggs, so these ingredients should be left out until later in the trial diet.
Other Allergy Testing Methods
Aside from following an elimination diet, there are two other testing options available that can help to determine whether or not your dog is dealing with a food allergy, and what type of food they are allergic to.
A simple blood test is one of the most common alternatives, however they’re not very accurate. There are some new food allergy tests in development which will be far more accurate, unfortunately, they’re not ready for use. Because of this, many vets are in favor of an elimination diet since it provides better accuracy.
Patch tests are another option and they’re significantly more accurate than blood tests. However, they’re not often performed at a regular vet’s office. Instead you may need to go to a special dermatology clinic. At this clinic, a protein is mixed with petroleum jelly, then taped onto your pet’s skin for a period of two days. The skin is tested on the third day. If there is evidence of skin irritation such as hives, inflammation, or redness, then it is considered a positive result. Unfortunately, this type of testing is very expensive, which is why many pet owners choose to follow the elimination diet instead.
Switching to Dry Commercial Dog Food for Skin Allergies
These foods often contain fewer ingredients, whole foods, and a well-balanced formula. This makes it easier for pet owners to avoid purchasing a food that contains ingredients that will trigger a skin reaction. In chronic cases, you will need to be very committed to uncovering the cause of the food sensitivity.
You will need to scrutinize every label, looking closely at all of the ingredients. Fortunately, many of the leading dog food manufacturers are now more aware of potential health concerns, which is why each high-quality brand offers a product line that’s designed for dogs with sensitivities and allergies.
Types of Dog Food for Skin Allergies
There are a couple of types of dog food that are usually recommended for allergy sensitive pets. The first is the limited ingredient diet and the other is novel foods. There are many foods that are prescription-only, however, there are some great foods that you can try that are available in stores or online.
If you’ve taken the proper steps and followed the elimination diet, then finding the right dog food can be as simple as switching them to a food that doesn’t contain that ingredient. However, if you haven’t done an elimination diet, then you will need to switch your dog to a food that doesn’t contain the same types of ingredients as their current dog food and monitor their condition to see if their allergies clear up. Usually, you can shorten this process by making the switch to a limited ingredient diet or a type of hypoallergenic dog food.
Hypoallergenic
Many vets will agree that the best approach to protecting your pet from a food allergy is to switch to a hypoallergenic food. However, with so many brands and formulas available on the market, finding hypoallergenic food that contains quality ingredients can be challenging and expensive. The cost is higher since these foods contain novel protein such as duck, venison, and bison.
Prescription
Some types of dog food that are made for dogs with food allergies will be available by prescription only. This can make the process more complicated for the pet owner, since they will be unable to purchase this brand in stores. Fortunately, there are many online vendors to choose from that will send you the pet food, if you provide a copy of the prescription. In other instances, the vet may also carry this line of food, so you can purchase it at your vet’s office. As you can imagine, food that’s prescription-only will be more expensive, compared to the food you purchase at your local grocery store or pet store. However, considering how the right food can make your pet look and feel, you’ll soon realize it’s worth every penny.
Grain-Free
Certain types of grains can also cause allergic reactions, usually in the form of digestive upset. Grain free formulas are often more expensive than traditional dog food because they’re not loaded with fillers. Traditional dog food will use fillers such as grains, as the main protein source. Grain-free products will use a high-quality protein as the main source. This larger amount of protein will equal a higher price tag.
Novel Proteins
These proteins are less common protein sources found in dog foods, which is why they carry a lower risk of allergies. Novel proteins can consist of herring, lamb, venison, rabbit, and bison. Trying a pet food that contains a novel protein is one of the smartest things pet owners can do. Since it’s often protein that’s the reason behind skin issues, coat issues, and digestive problems, switching to a dog food that contains a type of protein most dogs don’t have can help the pet owner to determine if the protein in their pet’s old dog food was the culprit. Remember, in many cases, allergies will not happen overnight, allergies can develop over time.
Food Ingredients to Avoid
Below, you’ll find a list of the most common food allergens for dogs. Since one of these foods will likely be the culprit of your dog’s skin rash, it’s best to avoid foods that contain them.
Dairy-Free
Most dogs are dairy intolerant, and many dogs can experience an allergic reaction when they consume dairy products. Because of this, it’s best to avoid any products that contain dairy at all costs.
Eggs
Eggs can be a great, cheap source of protein, but they can also cause an allergic reaction in pets. Avoid giving your pet any type of food that contains eggs.
Fillers
Fillers such as corn, husk, and soy, and other types of fillers do not offer any nutritional value for your pet. They’re basically just cheap ingredients that are used to make up the bulk of pet food to save manufacturing costs. They are also common culprits of skin allergies. Avoid foods that contain these ingredients.
There’s a huge selection of dog foods to choose from these days that contain varying ingredients. Make an effort to try out foods that contain novel ingredients, and find a food that your dog enjoys, and one that doesn’t cause skin issues.
How to Prevent Food Allergies
Is there anything pet owners can do to prevent food allergies from developing? This is a complicated question to answer. While many researchers still don’t know much in regard to how to prevent allergies entirely, there are some things you can do that can help to reduce the chances of your dog developing severe allergies over time.
First, proper nutrition should begin during puppyhood. Follow the appropriate diet, don’t skimp on food quality, and use supplements if necessary.
Some researchers believe that severe gastroenteritis or early gastroenteritis, especially in young dogs or puppies, will lead to an adult that is more likely to develop an allergic response to their food. Preventing gastroenteritis may seem simple enough. Basically, you will not allow your dog to eat anything but dog treats and dog food. However, in reality it’s significantly harder to deal with. A dog can eat a variety of things, some of which are not harmful, such as wild berries, bark, dirt, and grass. The point here is that it can be very difficult to police everything that goes into your pet’s mouth.
If you believe that your dog has gotten into the trash or has consumed something that can cause stomach upset, then you may need to make the switch to a low protein diet, until their stomach upset has passed. You can also reach out to your vet during this time. Generally speaking, if a dog has diarrhea that lasts more than 3 days without any signs of improvement, or if the diarrhea is very severe, then contact your vet immediately. In severe cases, you should not attempt to treat your pet yourself or by using over-the-counter medications. It’s especially important to avoid giving your pet something that will stop the diarrhea since this can result in keeping the offending toxins trapped in the gut.
Usually, a dog should have no problem digesting protein. Pet owners who feed their dogs a raw diet or homemade cooked dog food by blending or grinding their protein source using a food processor will find that their dog may have fewer problems digesting protein. Dogs that are fed a commercial dry dog food that has protein already ground in it before the food is processed may find that this option is more convenient.
Allergy or Food Intolerance?
While you may initially believe that your pet has a food allergy it may actually be a food intolerance. This means that there’s some type of association between a group of symptoms and a food, usually in the form of gastrointestinal issues or skin problems. A true food allergy triggers an adverse immune response that causes the cells in the body to release compounds or histamines that will result in itchy skin and other allergic signs.
A food intolerance doesn’t involve an immune response. However, the signs of a food intolerance will look similar to the signs of an allergy. As an example, dogs are lactose intolerant. When their body doesn’t process the lactose found in milk this can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea.
Intolerances and allergies both cause adverse food reactions. True allergies, which are caused by the immune system attacking the food protein, are not quite as common as food intolerances. If a dog seems otherwise normal, even if they are scratching and licking frequently, a food intolerance, not an allergy can be to blame. That being said, a dog’s diet will definitely play a major role in helping to manage skin diseases and conditions, regardless of whether or not they have an allergic response to food.
Food Allergies and Genetics
Are you concerned that your pet may be predisposed to food intolerances or food allergies? There is some evidence that shows us that if a parent has a food allergy, then their offspring is more likely to have a food allergy at some point in our life. So yes, genes can play a role. However, a dog’s breed doesn’t seem to be a factor. To date, there has been no evidence as to whether or not one breed is more likely at risk of a food allergy than another. This means that any breed of dog, at any time in their life, can experience a food allergy. Some people mistakenly believe that by deviating from the dog’s natural diet, there are some breeds of dogs that may be more predisposed to allergies. As an example, the Husky is accustomed to a diet that’s high in fish, which is commonly found in their natural habitat. That has led breeders to believe that feeding Huskies poultry can often result in a food allergy. However, there is no evidence to support this. Many dogs are able to easily adapt to a wide range of foods. The sex or age of a dog will also have no relevance to food intolerances or allergies. There have been some vets who have reported that allergies have been found in dogs under one year of age. This means that even puppies can be affected by an allergy.
Other Treatment Options
Food allergy treatments will all boil down to identifying the food your pet is allergic to and avoiding giving them that food. This is why the elimination diet is so important, since it’s the only way to identify the food proteins and other types of foods that a dog is having difficulty tolerating. Even if it’s a food intolerance instead of an allergy doing an elimination diet will still be helpful. However, at the end of the day, the simplest way to improve your pet’s symptoms and reduce their chances of experiencing a mild to severe skin rash in the future is to change their diet.
There are some other tactics that you may need to use for your pet who is experiencing a food intolerance or allergy. This can include taking medication,
Certain types of antihistamines such as Benadryl, can help your pet rest easier at night and will also significantly reduce itching. When a dog is feeling itchy, they will obsessively groom, scratch, or lick the area. This can lead to a secondary skin infection, which is why it’s so important to treat the itching even as you’re making the switch to a new pet food.
There are also some types of anti-itch ointments and shampoos that can also be beneficial. Antibiotics and certain types of antifungals may also be necessary in order to treat infections.

Dog Beds Buyer’s Guide
These days, there are many popular models of dog beds to choose from. But  a bed shouldn’t be chosen based on aesthetics alone. Instead, you’ll want to look for a bed that’s durable, comfortable, supportive, and designed to last. Of course, there will be certain factors to consider, such as the size of your dog, their personality, and the type of environment you live in. I’ll go over the must-have features to look for, and how to choose a bed that will be the perfect match for your pet. But first, I’ll discuss the benefits of dog beds and some of the many reasons why your dog will love sleeping in one.
Benefits of Dog Beds
Even if you let your dog sleep with you in bed from time to time, a dog should have their own bed in the home. There are many benefits that come with purchasing a bed for your pet, such as:
These beds can be used for sleeping at night and napping during the day.
Unlike the hard floor, a dog bed will keep a dog warm at night in colder weather. Certain types of beds can also keep a dog cooler at night, due to a breathable design and lightweight materials.
A dog bed can be very supportive and a great choice for older dogs, and those born with hip and elbow issues.
Large breed dogs are also prone to calluses on their elbows, which can lead to health issues down the road. A bed is the perfect place to train your dog to rest, since sleeping on a hard surface is the main cause of calluses.
These beds can also help a dog with anxiety to feel more secure.
If you or your partner are allergic to dogs, then having them sleep in a space of their own will definitely help to prevent exacerbating your allergies.
If you travel often, a dog bed can also be taken with you. This will help your dog to feel comfortable in a new place, so they’ll be less anxious and rest easier during the night.
These days, most models are very easy to wash, which will make life a little easier if you have a dog that is going through potty training or a dog that is prone to accidents in the home.
If your dog is crate trained, then adding a bed to their crate will make it more comfortable.
Every dog will benefit from having a warm comfortable bed that they can relax in and use to decompress during the night or day. Purchasing a bed based on your pet’s comfort needs, personality, and size will ensure that your dog sleeps in a bed that’s supportive and one that can help them feel calm, secure and comfortable.
Types of Dog Beds
There are many different styles of dog beds to choose from, each of which will have their own advantages and disadvantages. When you purchase a bed, there are many factors you’ll need to take into consideration. As an example, if you have a dog that likes to chew on everything, then you’re going to need a bed that’s very durable and designed to handle this type of abuse. Dogs that are arthritic, or those that have trouble getting up off the floor, we’ll need a type of orthopedic bed that is very supportive and comfortable.
Below, I’ll go over the different style options available.
Pillow
This is probably the cheapest style option and it consists of a cover that is stuffed with cotton or microfiber filling material. These beds are not a great choice for young dogs who love to chew, hyperactive dogs, or dogs that have arthritis. Essentially, they’ll work fine for the pet owner on a tight budget who has a medium-to-large sized dog who’s in need of a comfortable spot they can stretch out on. The biggest drawback to this type of bed is the filling, which usually gets flattened over time. If you do decide to choose this bed option, make sure that the bed has a cover that’s removable, which will allow you to keep your dog’s bed clean, without damaging the bed’s filling. However, if you’re on a tight budget, or you want to purchase several beds for the home, then a pillow style bed can be a great, affordable option, just keep in mind, these beds do not have a reputation for durability.
Orthopedic
This style of bed is a must for seniors. Pet owners who want their dogs to feel spoiled and those who are looking for the most comfortable style of pet bed on the market will love the supportive design that many of the top orthopedic beds offer.
An orthopedic bed will work for dogs of all sizes and ages. These beds are often made out of memory foam which is designed to mold to the contours of a dog’s body. Finding a high-quality memory foam bed can be a challenge since some are not as supportive as others. This can make getting in and out of the bed a challenge for older dogs. However, with the right type of memory foam bed, your older dog or your large breed dog will benefit from this type of extra joint support. The only issue with memory foam beds is the fact that they are difficult to clean. If your dog has incontinence issues then make sure the bed you choose has a protective waterproof cover.
Bolster
A bolster style bed will come equipped with a built-in pillow that runs along one side of the bed. This is often the preferred choice for large breed dogs. The surface of the beds are not quite as supportive as memory foam, however, they are a better choice than basic pillow beds. These beds are usually favored by larger breeds since they will allow the dog to spread out, while also providing a supportive surface for the neck and head. Unfortunately, the bolsters on lower-priced beds will flatten out over time.
Donut
These round beds have a bolster that wraps around the entire bed with a soft cushioned center that makes the beds a great choice for small and medium-sized dogs. Many of these beds are also covered with a very soft, luxurious material, such as faux velvet or faux fur. The best thing about these beds is that most are washable. However, the covers are not always removable, so this means you will need to toss the entire bed in the wash.
Must-Have Features
As you can see, there are many different styles of pets to choose from. However, there are also other features that you will need to consider, aside from the style and shape.
Padding Thickness
The type of padding a bed has can be a great indication of how comfortable it will be.  If your dog is older, then finding a bed with thicker padding that’s supportive will be crucial. Older dogs are less active than younger adults and tend to get pressure sores. Additionally, they are prone to arthritis and have a difficult time getting in and out of bed. Thicker padding can indicate comfort. However, how thick the padding should be can also be dependent on the type of material it’s made out of.
Padding Type
Aside from how thick the padding is, you’ll also want to pay attention to the type of padding used. As an example, a couple of inches of padding that’s made out of high quality memory foam can be a better option than a bed that’s made out of four inches of polyester filling. In order to determine the quality of the padding, try squeezing the padding. If you can feel your fingers touch then the padding may not be supportive enough for your pet.
Temperature Regulation
In colder weather, dogs love to curl up to keep warm. However, many dogs will become too warm on the same bed during the hotter months of the year and may prefer to sleep on a cooler surface such as the kitchen floor. Because of this, it’s important that you choose a bed that’s made out of breathable material that’s designed to prevent your pet from overheating.
Removable Cover
A bed that’s equipped with a removable cover is a must especially if your dog is still  in the process of being potty-trained or you have a senior dog who has the occasional accident. A removable cover that’s washable will allow you to strip the bed and toss the cover into the wash.
Waterproof
Look for a bed that has a cover that’s waterproof or a model that comes with a protective mattress cover. A waterproof cover is essential if your dog is being potty-trained or your older dog has accidents. This will prevent the mattress from absorbing urine, which can be difficult to remove.
Size
You need to choose a bed that’s the perfect size for your pet based on their measurements. However the size of the bed you choose can also be based on how they prefer to sleep at night. A donut bed is perfect for a small breed dog that loves to curl up when they sleep. For large breed dogs that love to sprawl out, a bolster bed or a pillow bed may be a better choice. Before you order a bed make sure you pay close attention to the manufacturer’s spec sheet and look at each bed’s measurements. If your dog loves to stretch out then make sure you choose a bed that offers a few inches of space on each side so your dog will feel comfortable and secure. Most manufacturers will also recommend a bed size based on your pets weight so make sure you also weigh your pet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Dogs Really Like Dog Beds?
Yes. While your dog will probably still love sleeping with you, every dog will appreciate having a comfortable space of their own. Having their own space will help your dog to feel safe and secure and will give them a special place to relax when they’re stressed or just in need of a nap.
Do Dogs Need Blankets?
Yes. If you’re cold, your dog is probably also cold. Many dogs will appreciate having a blanket to burrow under or snuggle against during the night, especially if you live in a climate that experiences harsh winters.
Do Dogs Prefer Hard or Soft Beds?
Some dogs are perfectly content sleeping on a hard surface, especially in hot weather, since a hard kitchen floor is often much cooler than a dog bed. However, the hard floor is not good for their joints and can also cause skin issues in larger dogs. Larger dogs are prone to calluses on their elbows and back legs. Over time, this can be very uncomfortable for your pet. If you live in a hotter climate, make sure you choose a bed that’s made out of breathable material, which will help to keep your dog cooler in hot weather.
Where Should I Put A Dog Bed?
Your dog’s bed should be placed in a quiet location in the home, a spot where your pet can go to relax and get away from a noisy household. However, there are dogs who want to remain close to their owners, in which case your dog may benefit from having their bed placed next to yours or in a dark spot in one of the common rooms of the home. As you can see, where you place the bed can have a lot to do with your dog’s personality.
Final Thoughts
The best dog beds for your pet are durable, comfortable, and the right size based on your pets measurements. Choosing the right dog bed will depend on the size of your pet, the climate in which she lives, how they sleep, and whether or not they have any health issues. Additionally, the type of bed you buy will also depend on their age. This buyer’s guide includes all the information you need to know to purchase a bed your dog will love, while the products I have included on my top 6 list each have something special to offer whether it’s an indestructible design, joint support, or a soft comfortable space that your dog can use to stay warm and comfortable throughout the day and night.

Best Dog Harness: Epic 2020 Buyer’s Guide
The best dog harness can provide a better and safer way to walk your pet. Harnesses come in a wide range of styles, sizes, and colors, designed to suit every price range and need. Some types of dogs, especially large breeds such as labradors and German shepherds, will do much better using a harness than a collar because a harness will place pressure on the chest instead of the neck. This works to remind a dog not to pull and also helps to prevent them from doing so in the future. So, whether you have a large or small breed dog, using a harness is a much safer and more effective alternative than a collar. But finding the right harness will depend on many factors including dog size, breed, age personality, and training.
I’ve put together this buyer’s guide to help you find the perfect model for your pet, in addition to including six of the top models on the market. Each of these harnesses has something special to offer whether you’re looking for a model that will deter your pet from pulling, or a secure safety harness that will protect your small breed dog and prevent them from slipping the harness as soon as you head out the door. Below, you’ll find a comparison chart which will include each of the models that made it onto my list, how they rated, and their top features.
Dog Harness Comparison Chart

Conclusion
This highly adjustable harness is perfect for dogs of all ages. Owners can use the chest attachment for dogs that are new to leash walking, or for dogs that are prone to pulling. Voyager Step-in Air Dog Harness
Our Rating: (4.5/5)
This breathable, all-weather harness is made out of mesh and features a lightweight design that’s comfortable and highly adjustable. On the sides of the harness, you’ll find two reflective bands that make your pet highly visible, so the harness is perfect for use in low light conditions. The loop and hook fastener will help you easily adjust the fit of the harness, which will prevent your pet from backing out of it during a walk. The double D ring design will let pet owners choose the correct attachment point based on how well their pet walks on a leash. The D ring on the back is designed for casual walks and for pets who are leash trained, while the D ring on the chest can be used for dogs that pull.
Pros
Adjustable
Available in 27 color options

Pros
Durable

Two leash attachment points
Escape proof
Cons
Not breathable
Conclusion
This harness is very durable and is perfect for large breed dogs. It features a couple of heavy-duty metal attachment points that have been load tested up to one thousand pounds, an adjustable design that allows you to achieve the perfect fit, and a large padded handle that’s easy to grasp and designed to give you more control during a walk. Our Rating: (4/5)

Dog Harness Buyer’s Guide
If you’re tired of losing control of your dog whenever you head out the door for your morning walk, then a harness may be the perfect solution. Many dogs get very excited when it’s time for their morning walk. This can lead to the dog pulling, or trying to head in a different direction, or lunging at people that you encounter on your walk. A harness is a powerful training tool that can give you back control over your pet during a walk. A dog that pulls can make for a dangerous situation, especially if you’re walking in a high traffic area or your pet is animal or dog aggressive. However, there are many different types and styles of harnesses to choose from. The model you choose for your pet will depend on a variety of factors including breed type, energy level, training, and more.
There are many benefits linked to harness use, and several reasons why dog trainers recommend harness use over collars. I’ll go more in-depth about why harnesses are a better alternative and why both you and your dog will enjoy a better walking experience once you make the switch. Dog Harness Benefits
The right dog harness can be the perfect training tool for young dogs who haven’t learned how to walk on a leash. Harnesses will prevent dogs from getting tangled up in the leash and potentially hurt in the process. They also offer better control which is very important especially when you’re navigating busy city streets or trying to make it through a crowd.
If you have a very large dog who is strong, then using a harness will give you more control and will make walking your dog much easier on your back and arms.
Small breed dogs are prone to injuries caused by tugging or pulling on the leash. Using a harness will disperse the pressure over a large area of the dog’s body. This works to reduce strain on their back and neck.
Wearing a harness will discourage your dog from pulling. When your dog is wearing a collar and begins to pull on their leash, they’re moving forward, so they know that pulling is a successful way to get where they want to go.
Whether attached between the shoulder blades or on the chest, a harness will redirect your dog; your dog will not feel rewarded by pulling you because doing so will not get them anywhere.
If your pet needs some assistance getting up off the floor after they have been sitting or lying down, then using the attached handle found on the top of most models can allow you to pull them up gently without causing any discomfort or pain.
If your dog is an escape artist, then a harness is a great solution, since they are more difficult to slip out of than a collar.
Must-Have Features
Once you’ve decided to make the switch from a collar to a harness the next step is choosing a model that will work for your specific pet. There are many different styles and options available. Below, I’ll go over the different styles to choose from, to help you narrow down your choices and find the perfect harness for your pet.
Material Type
You’ll find several different material options to choose from including nylon, cotton, and polyester. Harnesses made from nylon are said to be the most durable and more breathable than a harness made out of polyester.
Polyester
Is a tough material, with some stretch to it, but it’s not very breathable. The lack of breathability can make this material a poor choice for pet owners who live in hotter climates or for activities such as jogging.
Nylon
Most top models are made out of a thick nylon material that can be found in a variety of colors. Nylon is very durable and breathable, which is why it’s the most commonly used type of material for harnesses.
Soft Mesh
Mesh harnesses are breathable, lightweight are a good choice for the very active dog or for hotter climates. Soft mesh is a great choice for puppies, dogs with sensitive necks, and toy breeds.
Size
With a harness, the right size is everything. A poor fitting harness can allow a dog to easily slip out of it and make a run for it. A harness that fits too tight can cause chafing and sores. Before you begin shopping for a new model, first measure your dog around the chest and shoulders. When you’re shopping online for a harness, take a look at the manufacturer’s size chart, which will include the measurements and sizing recommendations, based on breed size. If the harness fits correctly, you should be able to slip a couple of fingers between the harness and your dog’s skin.
Adjustability
A model that’s highly adjustable is a must. Many models will allow you to loosen or tighten the straps in order to provide a secure, comfortable fit. A harness that’s highly adjustable will also prevent your dog from easily backing out of a harness and escaping. Finding a model that’s highly adjustable in several areas will be important in order to provide a fit that can allow them to move comfortably without chafing, sores, rashes, or generally discomfort. At a minimum, you should be able to adjust the harness around the neck and chest.
Pockets
You’ll also come across some models that have a pocket or two. Pockets aren’t usually a must-have feature for a harness, but if you’re taking your pet for a long hike or on a camping trip, then pockets will come in handy and can allow you to store a collapsible water dish, treats, and your personal items.
Types of Dog Harnesses
Once you’ve decided to use a harness, the next step is determining which one is best for your dog. These harnesses have a variety of features that can help you to choose the right one.
Back-Clip
A back-clip harness comes equipped with a D ring that’s attached on the back. This design is probably the most common and it’s comfortable and easy to use for most pets. The D ring attachment places the leash far away from the trachea, so it’s a great choice for small dogs.
However, the downside to this style is that it gives the user less control and will not discourage a pet from pulling. So, if you have a large breed dog that drags you all over the neighborhood or a dog that lunges during a walk, then you’ll want to pass this style on by.
Front-Clip
A front clip harness is not quite as common as a back clip, but using one of these harnesses offers several advantages especially for dogs that are prone to pulling. The position of the D ring attachment makes it more difficult for a dog to pull their owner wherever they want to go. The placement of the leash point attachment will pull the dog towards the owner instead of forward, if the user pulls back on the leash to slow a dog down. This gives the owner more control during a walk. Because of this, front clip harnesses are usually favored by dog trainers for people with large breed dogs. The downside to this style of harness is that it’s more likely to become tangled around a pet’s legs.
Dual-Clip
A dual-clip style harness will offer the best of both worlds. While the rear clip is usually the attachment used for casually guiding a dog on a walk, the front clip can be relied upon when a dog begins to pull. The combination of the front and rear clip will allow pet owners to make the switch from the front attachment to the back attachment once a dog has mastered how not to pull. However, there are some drawbacks to this style. Dual attachment harnesses are often more expensive compared to the other options. However, if you need extra control over your pet during a walk then this type of harness is worth every penny.
Vest
A vest harness is often heavily padded on the chest and features a simple design that allows you to easily slip this harness on and adjust it for the perfect fit. However, most models will have a clip located on the back, which makes them a poor choice if you have a dog that’s a puller.
Why a Harness is a Safer Alternative
A collar can create strain on a dog’s windpipe. In some cases, collars can also place unnecessary strain and pressure on the spine. Using a harness instead of a choke chain collar can prevent the hacking effect, choking, and difficulty breathing that a dog can experience when they try to pull you forward quickly. Additionally, small breed dogs are more prone to trachea injuries than large breed dogs. The pressure placed on the trachea can have unexpected consequences such as tracheal collapse, soft tissue damage, bruising, and an increase in eye pressure. Pressure from collars can also lead to musculoskeletal problems.
How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness
As I mentioned earlier, measuring your dog for a harness before you buy will be important. Different styles of harnesses may require different measurements to ensure a proper fit. In most cases, the technique I use below to measure a dog will provide the measurements you’ll need to use for most styles.
Before by measuring your pet’s chest. Measure around the dog’s body, beginning at the bottom of the rib cage at the widest part, right behind the legs, then go up and over the back and down to where you began.
To measure the neck, you’ll wrap the tape around the thickest part of the dog’s neck, which is right at the top of their shoulders. Next, you’ll measure the narrowest part of their neck where their collar rests.
Last of all, weigh your dog. Many brands of harnesses will also include weight as part of their sizing requirements. If you’re not able to weigh your dog on a scale, then you can look up the average weight for their breed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Harness Hurt My Dog?
A harness that doesn’t fit properly can be uncomfortable for a dog, especially if it fits too tightly. A poor fit can cause rubbing if the harness is too loose and doesn’t fit snug against the body. A loose harness also increases the risk of a dog slipping out of the harness.
How Tight Should a Dog Harness be?
A harness should fit snug, but not too tight. It should be snug enough that a dog is unable to back out of it and the D ring attachment should rest higher up on the chest.
Can I Leave a Dog Harness on All Day?
No. Leaving a harness on day and night can be very uncomfortable. Additionally, a harness that’s wet should also not be left on since it can cause a skin infection. Wearing a harness for an extended period of time can lead to skin chafing and general irritation.
Do Harnesses Stop Dogs from Pulling?
A no-pull harness can help to eliminate or reduce pulling behavior. In general, harnesses are a good choice for walking since they can remove the strain that’s placed on a dog’s neck and can give the owner more control. A no-pull harness for large breed pets that pull will be a true lifesaver for the dog owner.
Is it Ever too Late to Start Training a Dog?
No. Whether you’re rescuing an older dog from a shelter, or you’ve decided to train your older family dog, there’s no reason you can’t start training them right away. In fact, many older dogs are familiar with basic obedience commands.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the best dog harness for your pet should be based on their age, size, training, and their usual behavior when you take them out for a walk. There are many styles and options to choose from which can make narrowing down your choice more difficult. However, this guide, combined with the six product recommendations that I’ve included here should help to make that choice much easier. Finding the perfect harness for your pet can be a total game-changer and can make a normally chaotic walk that involves pulling and struggling for power, relaxing, mentally stimulating, and exciting. I hope this guide and the products I’ve included here will help you find a type of harness that will benefit both you and your pet as you explore the great outdoors and enjoy some much-needed one on one time.

This high protein grain-free dog food is designed for adults. The main protein sources include salmon and white fish. This formula is perfect for dogs of all ages. Grain-Free Dog Food Buyer’s Guide
Traditional dog food is grain-based and usually contains a combination of soy, rice, rye, oats, barley, corn, and wheat. While these are all good sources of carbs, many brands often contain a higher carb content than what’s needed. Many pet owners decide to make the switch to grain-free foods because some pets have a grain allergy. However, in many cases, an allergy is often linked to the protein source. Beef is often linked to food allergies in dogs. Many top grain-free pet foods contain a higher quality protein source, but not all grain-free foods are created equal. Some may contain too many carbs, which is why it’s important to ensure the product’s main protein source doesn’t come from starch, but from meat. Before I dive into what types of ingredients to look for in a top quality formula, first, I’ll go over some of the benefits of making the switch to this kind of pet food, and how it can help to improve digestion, minimize skin issues, and improve coat health.
Benefits of Grain-Free Dog Food
Many pet owners don’t know much about grain-free food and the benefits that are linked to making this type of dietary change.
Below, I’ll go over some of the most important benefits of a grain-free diet and how it can have a positive impact on your pet’s health.
Many dogs have digestive issues when it comes to grains. Dogs that have trouble digesting grains may experience serious health issues such as rashes, inflammation, and gastrointestinal disease. Making the switch to a grain-free diet aids in digestion and allows the body to more efficiently utilize important nutrients.
For dogs with allergies, a food that’s grain-free is a perfect fit. Many owners have reported that their pet’s allergy symptoms disappeared entirely or decreased significantly. Allergy symptoms can include vomiting, rashes, constipation, loose stool, chewing, licking, and biting skin, and frequent skin infections. If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms you should make an appointment with their vet in order to rule out any serious medical conditions. During this time, you can discuss the option of switching to a grain-free formula. This will allow you to determine whether or not your dog has a grain allergy, if their symptoms subside after making the switch.
In most cases, the medical benefits that are linked to grain-free food are enough to get many pet owners to make the switch, but did you know that a grain-free diet can also improve the appearance of your dog’s coat? On this type of diet, you may notice that your dog smells better, their teeth are whiter, and their coat is shinier.
Because a high-quality grain-free food doesn’t contain any additives or fillers, it will help to keep a dog feeling fuller, longer. These formulas consist of high-quality fats and proteins, so you won’t have to feed them a large serving, like you do with grain-based dog foods.
In many cases, the indigestible fibers that are found in wheat and corn are what’s responsible for loose stool in dogs. Tapioca and potatoes which replace the carb content in grain-free foods will act as a type of thickening agent, which can result in smaller stool. It also means that your dog will not have to go to the bathroom as often.
Protein is the main ingredient that will fuel a dog, providing them with energy. Since grain-free formulas contain animal-based protein sources, instead of mainly plant-based protein sources, you’ll notice right away that your dog has more energy.
A diet that’s loaded with grains can lead to excessive gas. This can cause chronic cramps and discomfort in dogs. With a grain-free diet, you’ll notice that your dog is no longer dealing with excessive gas, which will be a good thing for both the owner and the dog.
When a dog eats grains, a film of carbs will coat their teeth. These particles will eventually be washed away by their saliva, but this is a process that can take several hours. During this time, the bacteria in your dog’s mouth will begin to feed on this carb film, which is what creates a foul odor. This means you’ll no longer have to deal with bad doggy breath when you make the switch to a grain-free diet.
Now that you know more about the benefits of dogs eating a grain-free dog food, let’s take a closer look at what factors you’ll want to consider when you’re shopping around for a new food, to ensure you choose the best product for your dog.
Important Features
When you’re looking for a high-quality grain-free formula, you’ll need to be careful concerning what ingredients are in the food. Grain-free formulas are often very high in protein and contain a better quality of protein. But the other ingredients added to these formulas are also important.
Below, you’ll find a list of the most common ingredients that are found in grain-free formulas.
Legumes
Legumes are high in protein. Legumes that are often found in grain-free foods include lentils, soybeans, peas, and chickpeas.
Potatoes
Many brands will include either white potatoes or sweet potatoes.
Protein Source
A high-quality formula will offer more than just a lack of grains. It’s more about the balance of nutrients, whole ingredients, and protein type and quality. The formula should contain real animal-based protein as the primary ingredient. This protein is easier for your dog to digest, so it will be easily absorbed into a dog’s body where it will then be utilized by different tissues and organs.
If a dog is allergic to certain types of proteins such as chicken and beef, there are still plenty of options to choose from, including:
Turkey
Duck
Lamb
Fish
Whole Carbs
If you want to make the switch to a grain-free food, then look for a product that includes veggies and fruits in the recipe. Fruits and veggies are loaded with essential antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, all of which will offer many health benefits.
Ingredients to Avoid
Just because a food is labeled grain-free doesn’t mean it’s healthy. In fact, there are many types of ingredients that you should avoid at all costs, including:
Vegetable oil
Salt
Xylitol
Sugar alcohols
Artificial colors
White flour
MSG
Cheap fillers
BHA and BHT
Rendered fats
Corn syrup
Artificial sweeteners
By-product meal
Flavor enhancers and fillers are commonly used to improve the flavor of the food. Even if the formula includes flavor enhancers, make sure that they come from a natural ingredient. Anything that’s labeled as artificial will be potentially harmful to your pet. Look for formulas that promote a well-balanced diet and contain a healthy amount of oils, veggies, fruits, and protein.
The Truth About Grain Allergies
When it comes to dog food allergies, it can be pretty complicated. In many cases, protein is the offending food and it’s also one of the most common types of allergen. However, not all proteins will trigger allergies and sensitivities. According to some studies, the most common allergens include the following:
Soy
Wheat
Corn
Eggs
Dairy
Beef
Chicken
But if fed regularly, grains can be a major allergen that can cause issues with your pet’s digestive system. However, your pet may also be experiencing an allergic reaction to the type of protein found in their food. The key will be to experiment with different combinations of ingredients in order to determine which type works the best. If your pet is allergic to grains, then making the switch to a grain-free food will be a good decision and one that can make all the difference in terms of their activity level and their health.
The Pros and Cons of Changing Your Dog’s Diet
There is plenty of debate concerning whether or not grain-free food is the best choice for dogs. The argument for grain-free foods is pretty simple. Many pet owners believe that a grain-free formula is more natural and similar to a dog’s ancestral diet. Because dogs are carnivores many pet owners also believe that plant-based protein sources should also be limited. However, this has been debunked by science. Overtime, dogs have developed the ability to digest most types of grains. Others advocate for a grain-free diet because they believe that grains are the most common culprit behind pet allergies. However, as I mentioned earlier, certain types of proteins, such as chicken and beef are often to blame.
The most common grains found in dog food includes white rice, soy, wheat, and corn. They’re a cheap source of carbs and they provide an additional amount of protein. Protein is essential in a dog’s diet. When you look at the label on dog food, you’ll often come to realize that food that’s high in protein actually contains a higher percentage of protein that’s plant based. This is usually in the form of wheat or corn, with only a small amount of animal protein included.
High Glycemic Foods
Many of these low-quality grains that make up most of a dog’s diet are high on the glycemic index. This index rates a food based on how high and how quickly they can cause blood sugar to rise. High glycemic index carbs can produce a type of inflammatory response in dogs. This can lead to cancer, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Some foods have been found to cause sensitivities or intolerance. Food sensitivities and intolerances can build up over time. This can result in problems that can be misdiagnosed such as skin allergies and GI issues. Both of these issues can be a direct result of your dog’s diet. Some pet owners may end up feeding their dogs more of these grain-loaded foods because they give their dogs a burst of energy, however, this energy doesn’t last all day, which means a dog will usually be hungry and ready to eat again a few hours after their meal.
Common Allergens
Grain-free formulas usually contain more concentrated energy sources. They also often contain a higher quality of fat and protein that comes from animal sources. These foods can help to meet a dog’s nutritional needs in smaller quantities, so a pet owner will end up giving their pet less food, but their dogs will receive all the fat, protein, and essential vitamins and nutrients they need, despite this smaller serving size.
Grains such as wheat or corn can end up activating food sensitivities. Choosing a grain-free formula will prevent this.
Wheat
Wheat is a type of a cheap source of protein. It contains gluten which is a sticky type of protein that’s known to cause issues in people with a gluten allergy or intolerance.
Soy
In moderation, soy can be completely fine. It’s often found in dog food and used as a source of protein in order to boost a food’s protein percentage. However, there’s a good reason why it shouldn’t be part of your dog’s diet. This involves the issues that revolve around the manufacturing process. Ninety percent of soy is genetically modified. The beans are mashed into fats and oils and the meal is separated out. Food meant for humans will use the oil and fat, while the meal is used for animals. Soy contains a high volume of natural toxins that can cause issues in many of the organ systems. It can have a negative impact on the thyroid gland and hinder hormone production.
Corn
Corn isn’t exactly harmful. In some cases, it can even be beneficial. It provides a natural protein source, and works as a digestible carb, making it an important energy source. However, it also contains contaminants that can put a dog’s health at risk. While the corn people eat is frozen, canned, or fresh, corn that’s found in dog food is not the same. The cheapest feed grade corn is what’s commonly used, so the corn may be contaminated with mycotoxins. Food that has corn listed as the first ingredient can be high in protein, but the protein content is mostly plant-based, instead of animal-based. Animal-based protein is superior to plant-based, when it comes to the canine diet.
Introducing Grain-Free Dog Food to Your Pet
Many pet owners are eager to make the switch to grain-free dog food, in order to help treat their dog’s skin issues. Unfortunately, this type of transition, if not done correctly, can cause digestive upset. Quickly transitioning to a new food is not good for a dog’s sensitive digestive tract. Pet owners must make the transition gradually in order to give their dog’s digestive tract time to adjust to the new food. The bacteria that lives in the gut has an important job, making vitamin K, absorbing water and nutrients, fermenting fiber, and creating short-chain fatty acids. Suddenly feeding a dog a new type of pet food will interrupt these important functions and can have a negative impact on beneficial bacteria.
Some of the common signs that can indicate you’ve made the switch too quickly can include:
Vomiting
Constipation
Diarrhea
Flatulence
Bloating
A Gradual Transition
Begin the transition by mixing some of your pet’s new food with their current food. Do this for several days in order to give his or her digestive tract some time to make the adjustment. Many vets recommend a period of ten days to gradually and slowly add in the new pet food while reducing the amount of old pet food in their diet.
Ideally, you should start with approximately ten percent of the new food and ninety percent of the old food. You’ll increase the amount of new food by ten percent each day, while decreasing the amount of their old food by ten percent each day.
Monitor Your Pet Closely
If your dog experiences any type of digestive upset during the transition, then you may need to slow down the process even more. At the first sign of digestive issues, you will need to go back to feeding your dog the balance of old food and new food that they were able to tolerate without any issues. Feed them that combination for a period of three to four days, then start up the transition once again. Avoid using any type of home remedy for an upset stomach and speak with your vet instead.
If your dog has any type of medical condition, make sure you consult your vet about making the transition to a new type of food. This is because some health problems can be negatively impacted by a change in diet.
If your dog currently has weight issues, then you should also consult your vet. A pet that struggles with weight issues will need foods that are designed to supply essential nutrients in increased concentrations in order to prevent malnutrition.
The High Cost of Grain-Free Food
One of the biggest drawbacks of making the switch to a grain-free food is the price. These foods are often much more expensive than grain dog food since they contain a higher level of animal-based protein and a better quality of ingredients. However, if your dog’s health is the top priority, then the higher cost of a top-quality pet food will be worth every penny. Like traditional dog food, the cost of grain-free foods will vary from brand to brand and can depend on the size of the dog food bag and the type of protein source.

Indestructible Dog Toys Buyer’s Guide
The right toys are multipurpose and can work to satisfy a dog’s instinct to chew. However, they should also be fun for your dog to play with. Toys that are designed to store treats inside can also provide your dog with much-needed mental stimulation and will keep them occupied for hours. But before I dive into what features to look for in your pet’s next toy, let’s learn more about the importance of giving your dog toys and the many benefits they’ll enjoy from having appropriate chew toys.
Benefits of Indestructible Dog Toys
Purchasing toys for your pet will provide both mental and physical stimulation. These toys will prevent your dog from becoming bored, which can lead to destructive behaviors around the home or yard, such as chewing on the furniture, or digging holes in the backyard.
A toy can also help to remove or prevent plaque buildup on your dog’s teeth.
Having toys will help to satisfy your dog’s natural desire to chew, saving your personal items from damage.
Dog toys are affordable and a great way to reward your dog for good behavior
Puppies will go through a teething phase, which can cause them to chew on their owner’s personal belongings and pretty much anything else they can get their paws on. A good, durable toy will help to satisfy their need to chew and will also feel good on their sore gums.
Important Factors
The toy you choose will depend on your dog’s play and chewing style. Some pets are avid chewers, while other dogs are fetchers. Before you begin shopping for a toy, there are some important factors to take into consideration, which I’ll go over below.
Safety
When selecting a new toy for your dog, safety will be very important. The best chew toys will be made out of hard rubber. These toys are very chew resistant and can handle a beating from an aggressive chewer. Low quality toys can easily be ripped apart, which can be dangerous if your dog swallows any part of the toy, especially any stuffing.
Dogs that love to chew often quickly tear their toys apart, which is why you’ll want to avoid any toys that contain a squeaker, since these can easily be swallowed and pose a serious choking hazard.
A standard rope toy can also be very dangerous if you allow your dog to chew on one unattended. The threads of these toys often get caught in a dog’s digestive tract and can bind up the dog’s intestines.
Plush toys are also a bad option since they contain cotton filling that can be swallowed once your dog tears the toy apart. If you have a large breed dog, then it can tear open one of these toys in a matter of minutes.
If you have a dog that’s an aggressive chewer, then you’ll need to search for a toy that offers a little give, so you won’t risk a young pup breaking or chipping their teeth.
Durability
Of course durability is essential. The most durable toys on the market are often made out of tough, thick rubber or nylon. These toys can handle even the most aggressive chewer and cannot easily be torn apart.
Toys that are marketed as indestructible are designed to handle rough play and aggressive dogs. Toys that are more durable will be large, heavy, and difficult for your dog to chew through.
How hard-wearing a toy is will often be determined by the type of material it’s made out of. For dogs, destroying a toy is part of the game. Some dogs will prefer to gently chew on their toy and carry it around the house or yard, but the aggressive chewer wants to totally annihilate it. A toy that’s indestructible will be a true challenge for a dog. But in reality, there really is no toy that can be considered indestructible. Instead, you’ll come across some toys that are significantly more durable than others. These toys may last several weeks or months before your dog is able to tear them apart.
Age Appropriate Toys
It will definitely be easier to find a durable dog toy that’s designed for puppies than it will be to find one for an adult large breed dog. However, for puppies, you need to be careful not to purchase a toy that’s too tough, since this can damage their teeth. Read the manufacturer’s product description closely when you’re shopping for a new toy. The manufacturer will clearly list the age of dog the toy is appropriate for.
Material
You’ll find dog toys made out of hard nylon, plastic, rubber, and even polyester material. The trick here is finding a toy that’s made out of tough material, but not too tough. Some types of hard nylon or plastic have been known to crack a dog’s teeth, while toys that are too soft can easily be torn apart. A dog toy should be made out of durable material that has a little give, which will satisfy a dog’s desire to chew, without damaging their teeth.
Size
Choose a toy based on your dog’s size. You won’t want to give your small breed dog a toy that’s too large for them to carry around, or one that they have a hard time chewing on. You also want to make sure the toy is large enough to withstand the powerful jaws of a large breed dog. You can easily determine whether or not a toy is suitable for your breed of dog by eyeballing it. However, when you shop online, the pictures can be somewhat misleading, so you may end up accidentally ordering a toy that’s too big or too small. To avoid this, make sure you read the product description, which will normally recommend the breed size.
Price
These types of dog toys are going to be pricier than the soft plush dog toys you can commonly find at your local pet store. However, the higher price is often worth it since these toys will not need to be replaced as often and are made out of high quality materials that are designed to withstand your dog’s sharp teeth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Do Dogs Rip Out Stuffing From Toys?
Dogs do this because of their prey drive. Some stuffed animals look similar to prey. A dog’s ancestors used to hunt. The presence of a plush toy may trigger your dog’s prey drive and can cause them to hunt and kill their toy. Some dogs are simply just destructive so it’s also possible that your dog is doing this because they are bored.
Are Antlers Bad for Dogs?
No. Antlers are very tough and can last much longer compared to other chew toys. Additionally, they don’t fall apart and will not splinter.
Are Hard Chew Toys Bad for Dogs?
Some types of chew toys can be too hard for a young dog’s teeth. If you have a younger dog, avoiding giving them a chew toy that’s made out of a hard plastic or hard nylon. A dog may end up breaking or cracking a tooth, which can lead to a costly vet visit.
Should You Give Dogs Ice Cubes?
Ice cubes are perfectly safe for dogs. Some vets even recommend giving dogs ice cubes as a treat. They’re safe to chew on and they can be very refreshing for your pet when it’s hot outside.
Final Thoughts
The best indestructible dog toys will provide your dog with hours of entertainment, while satisfying their need to chew. This can save plenty of wear and tear on the furniture, your shoes, clothing, and other personal items. Many of these toys will also promote oral health since they can help to prevent plaque buildup. Just like a child, a young dog needs toys for mental stimulation and physical stimulation. This will keep your pet happy, busy, and generally entertained. Purchasing a few of these toys will prevent your dog from quickly becoming bored, which can also lead to destructive behaviors.

Zampa Portable Foldable Pet Playpen
Our Rating: (5/5)
This is an indoor/outdoor playpen that will work for small to large breed dogs. This model is available in three size options, so you can choose based on the dog’s space needs and how much space you have in the home. This is an eight-panel model that is made out of material that’s durable and water-resistant. This model features mesh panels that are designed to improve breathability. The lightweight foldable design also makes it easy to store and transport, so it’s a great choice for vacations, camping trips, or even an afternoon at the park. Considering the lightweight design, I would not recommend this for large breed dogs, even though there are slightly larger sizes available. A large breed dog could easily escape or tear through the material. Instead, this model is a better choice for small breed dogs and puppies.
Pros
Lightweight
Foldable
Highly portable
Designed for indoor and outdoor use
Cons
Not designed for destructive dogs
Not recommended for large breed dogs
Conclusion
This lightweight, highly portable playpen is a great choice for small breed dogs and puppies, but it’s not durable enough or tall enough to contain and secure a large breed dog. It’s well built and folds up easily, so it’s a great choice for indoor and outdoor use, and for vacations, camping trips, and in any situation in which you need to keep your pet secure when you’re unable to keep an eye on them.

Our Rating: (4.5/5)
This four-panel playpen is a great choice for indoor and outdoor use. It’s made out of tough molded plastic and it’s a great buy for extra-small and small breed dogs and puppies. Dog Playpen Buyer’s Guide
Using a dog playpen can provide numerous benefits, such as keeping your pet safely contained when you’re not able to closely supervise them. It will also prevent them from accessing rooms or areas in the house that they shouldn’t be in. Pet owners that have a very large open yard, or small dogs that are prone to ruining flowers and other landscaping features, will also benefit from using one of these playpens, for a less destructive, and safer outdoor time. Below, I’ll go over a few benefits of using one of these playpens before I dive into the must-have features to look for before you hit that buy now button.
Dog Playpen Benefits
As I mentioned above, one of the biggest benefits of using one of these playpens is to keep a dog safely contained when the pet owner is not able to closely supervise their pet. This can prevent a dog from escaping the yard or exhibiting destructive behavior on patio furniture or landscaping.
Puppies can get into plenty of trouble if they’re not closely supervised. This is especially true if they’re in a new environment. So, if you’re planning on traveling and taking a road trip with the family and the family dog, bringing along one of these playpens to grandma’s house is a great way to ensure your puppy doesn’t take out their excitement on grandma’s furniture.
If you’re planning a camping trip and you’re concerned that your small breed dog or puppy may get loose during the night or while you’re building a campfire, then taking a puppy playpen along for the trip is a great way to make sure your pet stays safe and happy on your next outdoor camping adventure.
If you’re currently potty training a puppy then a playpen is a great way to get the job done. Potty training is all about consistency. However, if you don’t have time to take your pet out every two to three hours, or they often have accidents during the process, then using a playpen is a great way to contain the mess. Setting up puppy pads on one side of the playpen and a sleeping space on the other will prevent your dog from inappropriately eliminating around the house and encourages them to use the puppy pads instead of eliminating on their bedding. Basically, A playpen can save your carpet plenty of wear and tear.
If your dog is new to the home and keeps getting picked on by the family cat, then placing them in the playpen when you’re not in the room can help to prevent any negative interactions until both animals have learned to adapt to the new living situation.
Other Important Features
A playpen will allow your dog to enjoy the freedom of the outdoors without getting lost. Instead a pet can be confined in a pen on the grass and enjoy the sunshine and fresh outdoor air without owners fearing their dog will run into the street, fall into the pool, or get into trouble. Essentially, these playpens can make life much easier for dog owners. Property destruction will be minimized, training will be a cinch, and pet owners will have peace of mind knowing where their dog is at all times. A large and spacious playpen will also allow your pet to have more room to move around as opposed to crate training.
Additionally, playpens can also be used as a way to help reduce anxiety in pets who experience an increase in anxiety when their owners are not home.
A dog that’s left to wander around the home when their owners are away can often lead to destructive behaviors and inappropriate elimination. Playpens can be thought of as small rooms that can be used to make a dog feel safe and secure and comfortable while their owners are away. There are many different types of playpens to choose from, although the most popular types are designed for puppies and small breed dogs. However, you can also find models that are designed for medium and large breed dogs, although these are more designed for outdoor use only. Playpens design for puppies and small breed dogs can be used either indoors or outdoors.
Types of Playpens for Dogs
The right type of playpen for your pet should be made out of durable material and should feature a spacious design that will give a dog plenty of room to get up and move around.
Below, you’ll find a list of the different types of playpens to choose from.
Indoor
This type of playpen is meant for indoor use only. These are the models that you want to use inside to keep your puppy or a small breed dog contained in the home while you’re napping or running errands. Basically, there are a great choice if you’re not able to keep an eye on your pet 24 hours a day. Since it’s designed for indoor use only it doesn’t offer the same type of durability or level of protection that an outdoor model can. However, you can also find hybrid models that can be used for both outdoor and indoor play. Hybrid models offer the type of versatility that many pet owners are looking for, especially those who have small breed dogs and unfenced backyards.
Outdoor
An outdoor pen is much more durable compared to an indoor style playpen. These models are often made out of materials that are rust resistant and designed to handle the elements without corroding or degrading. If you want to ensure that your dog enjoys some much-needed outdoor time, then this style of playpen is a great choice.
Exercise Playpens
These models are very versatile and can be used outdoors and indoors. An exercise playpen is much larger than most indoor playpens and they’re designed to allow your dog to run around and play in a spacious environment. If you have a puppy that is going to grow very large then investing in a large playpen is a great idea. Keep in mind, these pens should be tall enough that your dog will be unable to jump over it.
Material Types
A dog playpen is available in a wide variety of materials including canvas, plastic, metal, and nylon. The type of material you choose will depend on the size of the animal and whether you need a model for indoor or outdoor use, or both. In many cases, models that are made out of nylon are easy to knock over, so they’re not a good choice for medium or large breed dogs.
Plastic
Models that are made out of plastic are considered the most popular type of indoor pen. Additionally, they’re very budget-friendly, durable, and lightweight. The style usually works the best for small breed dogs and puppies, due to the lightweight design. Because of how light they are, models made out of this material may not be a suitable choice for hyperactive dogs.
Metal
Models that are made out of metal will be more durable and sturdier compared to plastic playpens. This can make them a more suitable choice for hyperactive dogs and larger breeds. You’ll find a wide variety of heights available to choose from based on breed size. The biggest drawback to models made out of this type of material is the fact that they are significantly heavier than playpens that are made out of plastic. Additionally, without the proper coating, they can also rust over time.
Mesh
Considered the lightest of the playpen options, models that are made out of mesh are highly portable and designed for puppies and small breed dogs. The fact that they’re so easy to transport makes them a great choice for road trips and camping adventures. Considering how light they are and their lack of durability, they are not a good choice for large breed dogs, or dogs with destructive behaviors such as chewing.
Dog Playpen Training
A dog or puppy can be a great addition to the family. But many new dog owners fail to realize how much supervision puppies and new dogs need especially the first year at home. Playpens offer the perfect solution and one that will keep your dog safe and secure when you’re unable to supervise them. But teaching your dog how to stay in their pen without whining, frantically trying to get out, and how to use their puppy pads while they’re in their playpen, is a lot easier than it sounds. Because of this, I recommend using a playpen as soon as you bring your new dog home. Set up a playpen on day one and use it as a type of training tool. Doing so can help to prevent separation anxiety and will also save your personal items from being destroyed by an overactive puppy or an anxious older dog.
If you’re dealing with a puppy, then the first part of their training is often potty training. After you’ve taken the dog outside to eliminate, return them to their playpen, which should be placed in a quiet and safe location in the home. This will teach the puppy that the playpen is their den and since dogs do not like to urinate or defecate where they sleep, they will soon learn how to hold it until they’re next potty break.
Since younger dogs tend to have plenty of energy, take advantage of the playpen and allow your dog to burn up their energy before bedtime. Add some toys, which will also provide mental stimulation as they play.
Introducing a Dog Playpen to Your Pet
Make sure that you’ve chosen the right size pen for your dog. In order to ensure that your dog is comfortable using their own, try to introduce playpen time in a calm and positive way. The pen should never be used as a form of punishment. Instead it should be looked at like a reward of sorts. The pen should contain toys, a safe warm place to rest, and It can also include a few of your dog’s favorite treats. It should also be placed in a location that makes it very accessible to your dog. Begin by leaving the door to the pen wide open so that the puppy learns how to go in and out of it on their own. During this time, it’s also very important that you’re patient with the process. Bringing home an energetic new puppy and locking them up immediately can be the start of a very unhappy relationship. It can also lead to behavior issues.
Because all dogs love food, you can also use the pen for feeding time. This will teach your dog to associate the pen with good things such as food and treats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Dog Playpen a Good Idea?
Yes. With the right type of playpen for your dog, you can keep them safe, while providing them with a spacious comfortable area that they can call their own. It will help young puppies stay out of trouble and can also prevent destructive behavior in adults.
Should I Keep My Puppy in a Playpen?
Puppies tend to sleep a lot, so yes, using a playpen can be a great way to allow your puppy to rest during the day, in a contained space. This can prevent them from eliminating in the home, tearing up personal items, and can also prevent them from escaping the yard when you’re not able to supervise outdoor time.
How Long Should I Keep My Puppy in a Playpen?
Most vets recommend a maximum time of two hours. A puppy should not be left in a pen for a longer period of time since this can make them feel isolated. If you need to keep your puppy in their playpen for more than two hours, make sure you or someone can take them outdoors for a bathroom/play break.
Final Thoughts
Using the best dog playpen can allow you to run errands or do chores around the home, without the fear that your new dog or puppy is going to get into trouble. They’re also a great solution for dog owners who have a front or backyard that’s unfenced. Since playpens are supposed to keep dogs safe, it’s important that you choose the right one, based on the size and age of your pet. If you have a puppy, then choosing an indoor model for use inside the home can be the perfect way to give your puppy a safe place to rest and play while you’re at work or cooking dinner. If you want your dog to spend more time outdoors, but you want to prevent them from digging up your flowers, or escaping the yard, then the right playpen can give you much-needed peace of mind. This guide and my product recommendations will point you in the right direction, so you can choose a playpen that’s durable, secure, and large enough for your pet, based on your pet’s size, age, and unique needs.

The Top Reasons Why You Should Not Feed Your Dog Starchy Carbohydrates
When choosing the right food, snack and treats for our dogs, there are quite a few factors we have to keep in mind, especially if the main source of food is store-bought commercial dry food, because in that case, we have less control over what they eat, unless we carefully check for nutritional value, ingredients, and macros.
Carbohydrates can compose only 30% or even up to 70% of store-bought pet food, coming from grains and plants, like barley, oats, brown rice, whole wheat, corn, sweet potato, potato, and millet. A dog’s diet should consist basically 40% on carbohydrates, the rest being 30% of protein and 30% of fats, any excess of these three groups of aliments would have a negative impact in our dog’s health, mood and behavior, since each has an important function in the diet and digestive system, and the role of carbohydrates is to be the main source of energy for all the body functions and activities our dog does, once in the organism, dogs can break down some carbohydrates types into glucose or simple sugar that is easy to be absorbed and used, but more complex carbohydrates require a bit more of work to be broken down.
Starches are the main components of ingredients like potato, sweet potato, peas, grains, and beans. They are digested slower, and the body needs to use additional special enzymes (amylase) to break them down, stressing out the pancreas, causing an imbalance in the digestion process, and taking too much unnecessary energy.
This became a problem mainly with dry commercial pet food because manufacturers are abusing the use of carbohydrates in the process by adding too many grains, beans, and cheap vegetables that result in them in a productive low-quality ingredient, lowering the manufacturing cost.
So, what are the main starch-loaded ingredients you should avoid in your dog food nutrition facts?
Corn: mainly used as a filler ingredient, because it doesn’t bring any valuable component to the diet, and even though it can be included, it shouldn’t constitute the major part of the product.
Soy: it is used by manufacturers as a source of cheap protein, but it’s also the most common allergen used by the industry and has been shown to contain harmful chemicals and substances.
Wheat: while being nutritionally valuable for humans, our dogs can’t take it that well, it’s difficult to digest, and gluten is also a common allergen to avoid.
Potato starch: on the contrary to potato protein, the starch, commonly used as a binding agent, contains almost no nutritional value other than starchy carbohydrates.
Another reason to avoid ingredients high in starchy carbohydrates is that they are usually very high in calories, and contain very little nutritional value, so they bring nothing to the table other than slow digestion carbs, and supplying calories we could be covering instead with nutrient-dense aliments, such as vegetables like carrots, broccoli, and celery, or fruits like apples, berries pears, that are higher in good carbs nutrients and vitamins, and make up for the best training treats and snacks for our pets.

Certain Fruits Can Reduce Chronic Inflammation in the Dog
Chronic inflammation is one of the results of many health problems in dogs and cats, and it happens basically when free radicals are set free from the cell under oxidative stress, so instead of fighting against harmful materials or invaders in the system, the body reacts to its own cells, creating an immune response that goes wrong, and it creates problems in their digestive system. Thankfully there are many ways in which we can help them, most of them including changes in their diets, and in case of obesity, some exercise as well. So how can a change on a diet help them fight chronic inflammation? What foods and fruits are best for getting good results?
Our dog’s diet is directly related to this issue since the microbiome inside their digestive system plays an important role in the build-up of a healthy immune response to pathogens and harmful substances that threatens the body since what they eat determines what kind of bacteria inhabits the digestive tract. Some of these gut bacteria encourage inflammation when reacting to certain elements in the gut, while it’s been discovered that other bacteria actually have anti-inflammatory properties. Just as in humans, a diet that is high in saturated fats, processed food with conservatives and chemicals, sugar and processed carbohydrates has been shown to trigger the inflammatory symptoms, just like a diet too high in calories, that builds up fat tissue in the organism, that has been linked directly with chronic inflammation.
The best elements to add in their diets to help this issue are fruits, which are one of the best snacks and training treats you can use with your dog. Fruits are fresh, natural, and tasty, easy to include in their diets, and we can find in them loads of properties to have healthy and happy dogs.
Blueberries: loaded with antioxidants and fiber, blueberries along with the rest of the family of berries have been found to be the most efficient anti-inflammatory snack and the strongest antioxidant fruit in the market. They also help fight cancer and are a good source of vitamin C.
Papaya: This fruit has antioxidant properties that inhibit cell damage, and has the benefit, counter to other fruits loaded with vitamin C, to be low in citric acid levels, which make it easier for dogs to digest. Mangoes have a similar profile of properties and also help reduce arthritis pain.
Apples: they are fresh, and a good source of vitamins A & C, and fiber that plays an important part of your dog’s digestive system to flush out toxins and bad bacteria from the organism. Always remember when feeding apples and pears to remove the core and seeds.
Coconut: can be given in shreds, flakes, bites or oil, and apart from anti-inflammatory properties, it helps with arthritis pain, and is full of healthy fatty acids, and helps fight harmful bacteria, viruses, and infections.
Remember to include also in their diets leafy green vegetables and omega-three fatty acids that are found in fish oil, to increase the desired effects and increase their wellness more and more every day.

Do You Know What 4D Meat in Dog Food Is?
Understanding what makes up the favorite food for your pet is very crucial; otherwise, you may harm your favorite pet. The benefits in the food you give to your dog are a very important consideration.
What does 4D meat mean?
4D meat is a dried meat from animals that were infected from illness, unstable or that succumb to death after suffering that humans cannot consume. The 4D meat means meat from dying, diseased, disabled, and dead animals, especially livestock like cattle.
Are 4D meats fit for the Dogs?
According to US department in charge of Food and Drugs, 4D meat is certainly unfit for any person coming in contact with it or animal consuming it.
4D meats may contain harmful disease-causing organisms like bacteria such as salmonella, which can cause serious problems to your dog or even death. Many cases have been reported about dogs dying from meat suspecting to be 4D.
Cooked meat destroys any bacteria present, unlike 4D, which is used by a racing company called greyhound trainers.
Where is 4D meat used?
4D meat is used in the US and other countries such as Australia and New Zealand. However, the names given within these countries may vary like Knackery, the one used outside the US.
How dangerous is 4D meat!
4D meat has been used for a very long time by various people to feed their dogs. However, it is freighting if people use this meat with the knowledge that is harmful or just fit for their pets. The meat causes serious illness or even death to the pets that consume it.
On some of the occasions, we have to lose our loved pets to these meats. Why? This is because unlike the fresh meat of a healthy slaughtered animal that is normally examined to be fit for the purpose before it is released to be feed to the general public, the general cleanliness of the slaughterhouses, the health of the animal to be slaughtered and the equipment used in preparing any meat for the consumption is carefully examined in the normally cases as compared to 4D meat.
The fact that 4D meat is prepared from dying, diseased, disabled, and dead livestock, they possess a great danger to any person coming in contact or any animal consuming it. Animals may die from illness yet unknown, causing havoc to anything consuming it. Mostly dogs are the common victims of this meat.
Due to the rising demand for meat daily, there is a like hood that most of the industries manufacturing this are likely to deceive the general public if they are not well regulated. Branding alone doesn’t make any food safer for any consumption. The preparation process is the most and key factor to consider for any product to be granted as safe for consumption.
It’s highly recommended that the meat from the dead livestock should be buried or burned to ashes and not consumed at all to avoid the danger of transferring illness from such animals to other animals or even risk the lives of the people handling it.

Utotol Warming Pet Bed
Our Rating: (4.5/5)
This model is made out of high-quality PP cotton, with extra filling used to prevent the bed from losing its shape over time. The bolsters provide plenty of support for a dog’s head and neck. The cover is made out of jacquard material that’s more durable than the standard oxford cloth that many competing models use. The bed is also covered in a thick faux fur that will keep a dog comfortable and warm. The thickness of the faux fur can make this bed a poor choice for warmer climates. However, for colder climates, the bed is a great choice and can do an excellent job of keeping dogs warm at night when the temperature drops.
Pros
Faux fur
Bolsters provide neck and head support
Cover is washable
Plush sleeping surface
Cons
Cotton filling will flatten over time
Thick faux fur can make the bed too warm to use in hotter weather
Sleeping surface is not very supportive
Conclusion
The bed is not the best choice for older dogs who are in need of a more supportive sleeping surface. While the bed’s cotton filling does provide a nice plush sleeping surface, it can be difficult for dogs with joint problems to get in and out of the bed. This bed is a better choice for younger dogs looking for a comfortable place to rest. Fortunately, the cover is removable and washable, and the thick bolsters and large sleeping surface make this bed a good fit for young large breed dogs in search of a comfortable spot to sleep at night.

This model features a contoured design that cushions your pet and cradles their frame, for ultimate support. The design also gives a dog plenty of room to stretch out and relax. The sleeping surface is lined with faux fur that’s soft to the touch. The orthopedic foam mattress is very supportive and helps to reduce pressure that’s placed on a dog’s joints. The mattress is also very firm, preventing your dog from sinking into the surface when they try to stand up. This makes it easier for your dog to get in and out of the bed. The cover of the bed is removable and machine washable for easy maintenance and care.
Pros
Firm mattress
Supportive
Large sleeping surface
Contoured design
Cons
Cover is not chew-proof
Conclusion

The firm mattress surface will not flatten over time, making this bed an important investment for pets with joint pain and other age-related health issues. The massive surface space will provide large breed dogs with more than enough room to stretch out, while the thick plush cover will provide a softer sleeping surface that every dog will love.

MidWest Bolster Pet Bed
Our Rating: (4/5)
This bolster bed can be used alone or inside a dog crate for improved comfort. This model is not designed for chewers, since the cover itself is pretty thin. The bed is covered in synthetic fur and large padded polyester bolsters for neck and head support. The bed is one hundred percent machine washable and can also be dried in a dryer. It comes with a one-year product warranty, which is surprising for a bed in this price range. The bed’s padding is not supportive enough for dogs with joint pain. Additionally, older dogs may have trouble getting in and out of the bed since they will sink into the surface when standing.
Pros
Machine washable
Can be used with dog crates
One-year warranty
Low price
Cons
Not designed for chewers
Not recommended for dogs with joint pain
Conclusion
This is a fairly standard bolster bed, but the lack of a supportive sleeping surface will make it a bad choice for older dogs or dogs with joint issues. It’s also not recommended for dogs who chew, since the cover is not very thick or durable. The bed’s available at an affordable price and comes with a one-year product warranty, which will make it a great buy for dog owners on a budget.

Dog Bed for Larger Dogs Buyer’s Guide
While most dogs are totally fine sleeping on a couch, a dog bed can provide the type of space and support they need. A bed will also give your pet their own space, where they can relax, away from the noise of the house, hide from the family cat, and take a break from the kids for a while. Before I dive into the important features to look for in a new dog bed, I’ll first go over the many benefits using one of these beds can offer man’s best friend.
Benefits of the Dog Beds for Larger Dogs
Purchasing a dog bed can help you to train your dog to stay off the furniture. This will be especially important if you have a dog that sheds a lot.
If you’re tired of sharing your bed with your large breed dog, then placing a bed of their own on the floor next to your bed will definitely help you rest better at night, while still allowing them to remain close to you, which is what matters the most.
Older dogs with joint problems will benefit from sleeping on a supportive surface, one that will take pressure off their joints. Older dogs often have trouble getting up off the floor, especially after sleeping for hours. A raised dog bed, one made out of memory foam, will be the perfect solution for dogs with joint problems and can help them rest better at night.
If your dog has anxiety, then a space of their own can help them to feel safe and secure while they rest. You can place their bed in a dark quiet part of the home so they can relax in a quiet environment.
Many of these beds are highly portable, so you can roll them up and take them with you when you go camping or for a weekend trip to grandma’s house
If you’ve recently adopted a new dog, purchasing a new bed for them can make them feel more at home. It can also help them to bond with other dogs in the house by taking a nap together.
Dogs with thinning skin at the elbows will also benefit from using a dog bed, which can prevent the skin on the elbows from thinning further.
Beds equipped with faux fur covers will keep a dog warm at night when the temperature drops.
As you can see, buying your dog a bed of their own comes with many benefits, such as giving them a space to call their own, keeping them off the furniture, and providing them with a supportive space to sleep that can help minimize pain and discomfort that’s associated with arthritis in older dogs.
Other Important Features
A dog bed is a must for any dog, not just seniors. Large breed dogs commonly have issues with their joints as they age, or thinning skin on the elbows. Using a bed at an early age can help to reduce the chances of skin issues and joint problems. Orthopedic beds can also do wonders for dogs who suffer from joint problems and hip or elbow dysplasia. Dog beds will give your pet a comfortable space to call their own, while preventing them from taking over your bed at night. But finding the perfect bed for your specific dog may be a challenge, since every dog has their own preferences concerning how they like to sleep and what they consider a comfortable place to snooze.
In some cases, you can purchase a nice, comfortable bed for your dog, but they’ll simply turn their nose up at it.  The bed may not be long enough for your dog to stretch out, or it may be too soft or too firm. While the bed you choose should be comfortable, durable, and supportive, it should also meet your pet’s needs and preferences. Make sure you also take your dog’s weight and size into account. The size of the bed will be very important, as will the type of material the bed is made out of.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the must have features, so you can choose the perfect new bed for your large breed dog.
Size
Beds designed for large breeds will take up a lot of floor space, but they’ll also allow your dog to stretch out and really relax. Make sure you measure your dog and weigh him or her, before you start shopping for a new bed. Then, you can pay close attention to the dimensions of each bed to determine if the bed will be big enough to accommodate your dog’s size. Make sure when you’re looking at the specs that you purchase a bed that’s slightly larger than your dog, in order to give them a little extra space to move around.
Most beds will be recommended based on a dog’s weight. However, one company’s large may be another company’s extra-large.
Finding a dog bed for extra-large and extra extra-large breeds isn’t easy. Many manufacturers may label their bed as jumbo, but your dog still won’t have enough room to truly spread out. When you’re shopping for a bed, never choose one based on how the bed is labeled. Even if the bed is categorized as extra-large, look at the dimensions first, before you hit that buy now button.
Single and Multi-Layer Beds
A single layer bed is very durable and consists of a single layer of foam. These beds are often pricier than multi-layer beds that have been made out of a couple of slabs of foam and glued together. Beds filled with loose filling materials are considered the most affordable and the lowest quality.
Dog Age
Do you have a hyper younger dog? Or is your dog considered a senior? Younger dogs will continue to grow for the first year of their life, so make sure you choose a bed they will not quickly outgrow. You’ll also need to consider durability here since younger dogs love to chew.
Additionally, if you have an older dog, they will need a firmer, more supportive bed, one that’s easy to get in and out of.
A dog is considered a senior once they reach the age of seven. Dogs this age will need more frequent vet visits to check for health and mobility issues. Because of this, older dogs will greatly benefit from orthopedic style beds, especially if they have trouble getting up or lying down. Dogs that are older are prone to joint issues, so a foam bed will provide the type of support they need for a good night’s rest. The quality of the bed will matter greatly here, since low quality foam beds will cause a dog to sink down all the way to the floor, while a high-quality foam bed will not.
Protection
Whether you have a younger or older dog, make sure the bed is water-resistant or waterproof. This will prevent pet accidents from penetrating the cover and soaking the filling.
Materials
Beds are created out of a variety of synthetic and natural materials ranging from supportive foam to soft fleece.
Memory foam can be a great choice for older dogs because it provides support and cushioning to sore joints. Many large breed dogs have issues with their weight and hips as they grow older, so a memory foam bed can be a great choice for joint health. Additionally, beds that are made out of memory foam tend to hold their shape much better compared to beds that are made out of softer materials.
Filling
Beds that are filled with polyester fiber, cotton, or cedar chips are great for younger dogs who are looking for a comfortable bed to snuggle into. These beds are often priced more affordably than memory foam beds, but they’re nowhere near as durable and tend to get worn down over time, whether it’s from the weight of the dog or washing.
A bed that’s made out of a combination of materials will often offer the most comfort.
The filling material in a dog bed should never be washed, unless the manufacturer specifies that the bed is machine washable. You should avoid washing foam, polyfibers, and other types of fillers in order to avoid damaging the bed.
Colors
Does the color of the dog bed matter to you? Some models will only be available in a few color options, while others offer a variety of colors and patterns to choose from. Most commonly, you’ll find beds available in the following colors:
Cream
Black
Gray
Red
Khaki
Burgundy
These bold colors often match well with most home décor, however, if you want something a little fancier, you can find some brands that offer unique and colorful patterns to choose from.
Cover and Lining
If your dog sheds a lot, loves to play around in the dirt, or has the occasional accident, then you’ll want a bed that has a removable cover. These covers can be tossed in the washing machine, so you can easily clean and freshen up your dog’s sleeping space.
Bed linings are often waterproof, which will prevent water or urine from damaging the bed. Waterproof materials include nylon denier and polyester denier. If you come across the term denier on a dog bed’s spec sheet, make sure you take a look at how thick it is. This is usually measured in grams. Many lower priced beds will not include materials that are waterproof in the lining or base of the bed.
Durability
If you have a young dog, or a dog that’s destructive, then you need a bed that has a reputation for durability. Many dogs that chew will work on their bed at night, tearing the cover and going at the filling. If you don’t want to wake up to a mess, or have to constantly replace a dog bed, then make sure the bed you purchase is made for dogs that are destructive. This means you can expect to pay more, since pillow beds, which consist of thin material and are full of cotton filling, will be destroyed very easily if your dog is a notorious chewer.
How Your Dog Sleeps
If you’ve ever slept in bed with your dog, then you know dogs can sleep pretty wild
A circular bed will be perfect for dogs who love to curl up into a ball when they sleep. The round shape is very comforting to some dogs, but it won’t be a good fit for dogs who prefer to stretch out when they rest. Dogs that love to take up space will benefit from a rectangular shaped bed.
Bed Styles
There are many different styles of beds to choose from, each with their own pros and cons. Below, I’ll go over these style options so you can choose one that will suit your pet’s sleeping needs.
Bolster
Bolster beds feature walls around the sleeping surface. This design can make a dog feel safe and secure. However, if your dog is a wild sleeper, then they may not find the walls very appealing. These bolster beds are very thick and comfortable and can be a good choice for dogs with anxiety, older dogs, and dogs that love to sleep curled up. If your dog loves to spread out instead, then choose a flat pillow style model.
Wraparound
A wraparound bed features edges all around the perimeter of the bed and often have a small cubby at the end that a dog can burrow into.
Hammock
Hammock style dog beds will sit off the ground and are designed to keep a dog cool. However, they’re not very supportive and not a good choice for older dogs who may have trouble climbing in and out of the bed.
Orthopedic
Orthopedic beds are made out of a memory foam egg crate foam, and/or a cooling gel. They’re designed to provide support for the following conditions:
Arthritis
Hip dysplasia
Elbow dysplasia
Muscle disorders
Bone fractures
Bone disorders
A high-quality orthopedic bed will help treat certain medical conditions and can also be the best thing that happened to an aging dog who has trouble getting comfortable at night. All dogs need support, regardless of their age or whether or not they have an underlying medical condition. However, these beds are a must-have for dogs with special needs.
Pillow
These beds are also referred to as cushion beds and they consist of an even, flat surface that’s not raised on the sides. Most beds are rectangular in shape and look like a small mattress. However, you can also find square and circular beds as well.
Sofa Bed
These beds look like your standard couch with cushioned surfaces and an elevated back wall and two raised arms. These beds can also come with pillows as well.
Burrowing
These beds come with an opening on one side, which will allow a dog to burrow to keep warm. These beds usually come with fleece lining for extra warmth and are a good choice for dogs who get cold easily, or those with anxiety.
Heated
A heated bed is a great choice for dogs with joint pain. The warm surface helps to reduce inflammation and pressure placed on the joints. These beds must be plugged into an electrical outlet. Some will come with multiple heat settings for ultimate customization.
Cot
Some beds will come equipped with metal or plastic legs that will elevate the bed, keeping it off the ground. These beds can be used outdoors, with a sleeping surface that will protect a dog from the cold or hot ground. This sleeping surface is made out of stretchy material such as nylon. Since these beds are commonly used outdoors the surface of the bed is often made out of waterproof material or has some type of waterproof coating.
Other Buying Tips
If you have more than one dog in the home, buy one bed per dog. This will help to prevent the dogs from fighting over the bed.
If you love sleeping with your dog, but you want to avoid sleeping with them in your bed, try purchasing two dog beds. Since many dogs love to sleep with their owners, placing a dog bed in your bedroom can make the transition easier. They will also appreciate an extra bed placed in a common space in the home, so they don’t feel so isolated. However, new dogs, or dogs with anxiety may prefer to have their bed located in a quiet place in the home, such as the laundry room.
Do your research and find a bed that will meet your specific dog’s needs. If your dog is older, then an orthopedic bed or an elevated bed will be the best choice.
Make sure you choose a bed that works with the climate. If you live in a place that experiences hot summers and mild winters, avoid models that come with fleece lining or other types of insulative material. If you live in a part of the country that experiences freezing temperatures during the winter and mild summers, then a heated bed or a well-insulated bed will be the best choice, especially if you have an older dog or one with joint issues.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are Elevated Dog Beds Better?
An elevated dog bed will minimize the amount of debris that finds its way under or into a standard dog bed. This debris can cause discomfort and odors. A dog tends to rest better on an elevated bed, so they will be more active and have more energy. These beds are easier to get in and out of, so they can also be a better choice for large dogs with joint problems.
Why Does my dog Sleep on the Floor and not on his bed?
During the hot months of the year, a dog may get very hot, especially if their bed is made out of insulating material such as fleece, so they will look for a cold place to sleep, such as the kitchen floor. This will provide some relief from the heat.
Is it OK to Move a Dog’s Bed Around?
Yes and no. Your dog may become confused if their bed has been moved to another room. In fact, they may continue to lay on the spot on the floor where the bed used to be. In order to get your dog used to the new location, try moving their bed gradually, a few feet a day. This will make the transition much easier.
Is it bad for dogs to Sleep on the Floor?
While many people think it’s perfectly okay to allow their dog to sleep on the floor, it can lead to stiffness, pain, and joint inflammation, especially in large breed dogs. Basically, having a dog use a dog bed is just better for their health and can help to prevent health issues or exacerbate an existing condition.
Where Should a Dog Sleep in the House?
Most dogs feel comfortable resting near family members, especially during the night. Dog owners also feel better having their dog companions close by when they’re sleeping. Many people will keep a dog bed in their bedroom, in addition to a dog bed that’s kept in a quiet part of the home or in another common space. If you find that your dog is avoiding using their bed it may have to do more with the location than the bed itself.
Final Thoughts
A dog, regardless of their age, needs a bed. This will give you more space in bed and provides them with a comfortable spot of their own. The best dog beds for larger dogs are big, comfortable, and supportive. However, if you have an older dog, then you’ll need to take special care when choosing the right type of bed since you’ll need to find one that’s easy for your dog to climb in and out of. Additionally, younger dogs will have different needs since they may prefer a softer bed. You’ll also need to purchase a model that’s chew proof for younger dogs, since many go through a destructive phase. This guide and the products I’ve tested out will help you find the perfect bed for your dog, one that’s low maintenance, comfortable, and can provide your pet with their own comfortable space to stretch out on and relax.

Cancer-Causing Ingredients Found in Dog Food
Cancer claims the lives of many people in the world today due to harmful components found mostly in the food we consume. It is, however, saddening today that not only humans suffer from cancer but also pets like dogs.
We love dogs and are good pets to us. The dogs’ food we buy for our loved pets is becoming extremely dangerous, and claiming the lives of our loved dogs too. There are different foods found in the market today for the dogs. Choosing the best food for your dog is unavoidable if you want to keep your dog away from cancer.
Which foods are likely to cause cancer in dogs?
Cancer is commonly caused by aflatoxins. Aflatoxin may develop when foods like corn, rice, wheat or even legume are carelessly preserved, resulting in carcinogenic substances that cause cancer when they are fed to dogs.
The consumption of these foods over a long period of time deposits the carcinogen in the liver. The tissues further develop and cause tumors in dogs.
They are also some of the manufactured food believed to cause cancer like Kibble and
Rawhide.
Kibble contains aflatoxins, heterocyclic amines, acrylamide, and polybrominated diphenyl elements, which are added preservatives that are very harmful to a dog’s life.
Rawhide is a leather product. The fact that dogs like it; it is not a nice food for the dog either. It’s made from leather products of animals like cattle. The entire process at any tannery manufacturing plant uses chemicals that aren’t friendly to any life.
How to know if your dog is likely to be suffering from cancer.
If your dog is experiencing the following signs and symptoms, there is a high possibility that is suffering from cancer. They include;
Wounds that don’t heal.
Loss of appetite.
Swelling of the dog’s tummy.
Drastic loss of the weight of the dog.
Breathing problems.
Signs of a dog undergoing pain.
These are some indicators to show that your dog may be suffering from cancer. Experiencing such signs and symptoms in your dog may require seeking a veterinary for further assistance.
What are some of the cancer conditions in the dogs today?
There are various cancer types that dogs suffer from in the world today. Some of them can be easily detected while others not. Those that can’t be detected easily may require a keener and somehow super attention to be recognized.
Some of the cancers experienced in dogs include;
Osteosarcoma– affects the bones and bone marrows.
Lymphoma-affects the blood circulatory system of the dog.
Hemangiosarcoma-type of cancer that affects the heart of the dog, which is the dog’s power house. Cell Tumors– they are the cancer of skins in dogs.
Melanoma-affects of the dog’s mouth.
How to prevent dogs from getting cancer.
As a dog keeper, first, you have to stop cancer by prevention, putting in mind that prevention is better and cheaper than cure. Deciding which type of food you give to your dog is very important. You should consider mostly healthy foods, fresh meat, garlic, freshly cooked food, fresh vegetables, or organic food more than any artificial food you’re not very sure of.

Important Reasons to Only Give Your Dog Filtered Water
Every dog deserves a good life, and a good life sure comes with good food. However, good food, as we all know, doesn’t just stop at solids. It extends to water as well as other liquids. Water is the main constituent of any meal. It does not just aid digestion. It improves immune. However, your dog should not just drink water. It should drink good filtered water.
Filtered water performs, among other numerous awesome functions. Some of them are;
Safeguards Your Dog from Contaminants
More often than not, water from your tap contains a lot of contaminants, which are very harmful to your pet. Running water from rusty pipes already makes water unsafe for your dog to drink. Also, copper, as found on the water, is a major cause of liver infections and renal damage in humans. In dogs, excess copper has been linked to health conditions such as hepatopathy, which is serious damage to its liver.
Coldwater is great for Dogs
As against many opinions that cold water is harmful to dogs, cold water is actually a great liquid for your dog. Real harm occurs only when your dog drinks a lot of water too fast. When dogs take ice or water too fast, they tend to gulp air, which results in bloating.
However, cold water can cut down this unwholesome binging habit. Using a stainless bowl to put cold filtered water is a great idea as it keeps the water steadily cold.
Contains Far Less Chlorine
Chlorinated water does even more bad than good. Chemicals in tap water tend to dissipate even more the longer water sits. Filtered water contains significantly little chlorine reducing your dog’s exposure to the risk of throat infections. Tracheal infections as it were could negatively affect your dog’s snarl, growl, and bark. It could also result in swellings in the throat, which would result in poor feeding and eventual loss of weighty.
Always keep in mind that filtered water keeps your dog safer and healthier and stronger every day. A dog that feeds well runs well. Keep your dog up, and it will be safe as such. So don’t wait until chemicals spread wings across your dog’s system. Get down and see to the health of your dog.
Filter that water, save your pet! It’s a cool duty and guess what, it doesn’t cost so much. Just get a water filter from any store around you and do the right thing!

The Real Meaning Behind The Word “Natural” On Your Dog’s Food Label
Are you a dog owner who wants to give their best dog training treats loving dogs the best food ever?
Are you considering switching to “natural” pet food? Are you confused as to what natural pet food really means? There is really much debate today as to which food must be called as the natural pet food. How, then, do you decide what pet food is natural for your dog?
Another important question to ask here is whether natural pet food is something that has nothing added to it or nothing is done to it? Does it actually mean that it was strictly organically grown and fed? If so, what exactly is organic? How can you define it?
Can a natural pet food have other natural substances added as taste enhancers and still be called a natural pet food? These are the very few questions that you can be bombarded with when you choose to go natural with your best training treats and loving canine best friend!
The dictionary tells us that nature is defined as—
Conforming to the usual course of nature
Produced by or present in nature and so on
Please note that even the dictionary has multiple definitions for the word “natural.”
How, then, do we decide which pet food is natural and which pet food is not?
Simple! We rely on our common sense to tell us which one meets our standard and which one fails the test. In the year 2001, AAFCO (Association Of American Feed Control Officials) Decided which standards will help the manufacturers of the pet foods term the food as “natural.”
AAFCO says that when labeling the commercial feeds, specialty pet foods, and pet foods, the use of the term “natural” is allowed only when the product is used as a whole, and the components of all the ingredients meet the guidelines of the definition which the AAFCO has provided. It also states that it is false and misleading if there are any chemical ingredients present in the product. BHA and Propylene Glycol are the two most commonly used synthetic chemicals found in some of the pet foods. An exception is made for synthetic vitamin and mineral additives.
The definition which AAFCO provides for the term “Natural” as it relates to pet food is—
“NATURAL” – Something which is derived inherently from animal or plant sources, which is either in its unprocessed state or has undergone some natural processing but not any form of chemical processing and it does not contain any additives is termed as natural.
Not everybody has agreed as to exactly what the term “natural” means in pet food. This means that you must be very careful and must rely on your very own judgment and not fall for any gimmicks or keywords. Always read the label carefully before purchasing the pet food, regardless of which “natural” pet food you are buying. Use common sense, and your canine best friend is bound to thank you. Bone Appétit!

Freshen Your Dog’s Breath with Parsley
Bad breath in dogs may not seem like an inconvenience or a problem in general, it’s not like it’s an important issue we have to deal with or take care of, but when it’s our dog, whom with we spend most days and hours playing with, we may notice that our four-legged friends may benefit from a little mouthwash once in a while, to refresh their breath and make them feel cleaner.
There are many causes for bad-smelling breath, and we have to understand that their mouth health works just like ours. Just like we wake up every morning and brush our teeth to get rid of that sleepy breath we dislike, our pups may benefit from some brushing as well. It is recommended that we brush their teeth every day for at least 30 seconds (don’t use human toothpaste), and provide appropriate chew toys and dry food. Not brushing your dog’s teeth regularly may lead to plaque build-up, and too much plaque build-up can push the gums away from the teeth, exposing new areas for bacteria to develop. This inflames the dog’s gums, and will most likely lead to cavities, infection, tissue destruction, tooth loss, and even pus formation (we certainly don’t want any of this).
Apart from brushing our dog’s teeth and checking annually with the vet for their mouth health, there are some awesome natural remedies for making our dog’s breath fresher, with ingredients or elements you most likely have in your kitchen already. The best option is considered to be parsley, the king of garnishes provides a handful of vitamins and minerals that will also help with immunity, vision and kidney health, and soothe an upset stomach and digestive problems. Its rich antioxidants protect from radical-free damage and also relieve from inflammatory conditions as well as pain from arthritis and swelling. It’s also famous for being a natural breath freshener. You can add it in small amounts to their regular dry food or dissolve some teaspoons in water to create a juice you can pour into their bowl. Be sure you are choosing the curly leaf variety, because spring parsley may be toxic to dogs since it belongs to a different family of plants.
Other options are natural snacks like bones, crunchy foods like carrots and apples (who also contribute as a healthy snack for them), that when being chewed act just like a toothbrush scrubbing away hard-to-reach food particles and plaque build-up, and they are also one of the best and healthy training treats!. Coconut oil is another great option that will not only improve your dog’s breath but is also known for its immunity-boosting properties and improving skin and coat health, be sure to add just a little bit to avoid upsetting your dog’s stomach. Apple cider vinegar is an option that may surprise you, but it’s proven to be effective! Adding just a teaspoon into their water bowl will suffice to note the effects in a couple of days.
