Here are some progress shots of the dragon sculpture I’ve been working on. I had to cut it up and print it into 33 different pieces to make moulds for casting in wax. Then we will cast it in bronze at my friend Gary Price’s foundry. Well, I wrote out a long story about this piece and Instagram said it was too long so… it’s a 3D model I’m going to have cast in bronze for a good friend. I’ve done many iterations and had many stops and starts, but I’ve learned a ton! I’m trying something new, paper wigs! These are mannequin heads that I sculpted on my iPad and printed. My son Talon turned these wood pedestals out of wood from my yard here in Woodland Hills. I handed him a quick sketch of the shape I wanted and some rough sizes and he went to it and 2 hours later he’d turned 3 pedestals on my lathe. He’s so freaking talented! I love Chinese dragons, I’ve loved them since I started going to China in 2009. There is a temple in part of the country that I worked a lot in that has ceramic dragons above the entrance gate to the temple grounds. I loved seeing that dragon, and hiking the 9 Dragons Mountain. Those were good times. I never k ow what to expect when I do something new like this. I was so excited to be accepted into this show. Getting ready and creating pieces of art to sell for $100 each was so much work, I worried at moments that I wouldn’t get it all done in time. But I did! I made a commitment to do this show and I always do my best to keep my commitments, so I created, and had so much fun pushing myself to do it. I have to say though, that being at the show and getting to talk to so many people who love art! It was so fun, every bit as fun as creating the art itself! I love talking to people who love art! Here is my newest piece, called Masquerade, all primed and ready for paint! I actually really like this step because it with all of the menagerie of miss-matched colors gone, it takes on a new life, about form and texture and composition. I can see what works and what doesn’t. I’ve actually gone in on some pieces at this stage and added or destroyed and revised portions of the sculpture to make it better. I’m happy with this sculpture though so I’m leaving it as it is and moving on to painting. This piece is slated for the #autumnapparitions show at @jkrgallery the show opens tomorrow night and runs through October! I’m really glad that I have been invited to participate in this show, it was fun and I figure out how I was going to make a work of art that is somewhat Halloween themed yet is not too kitschy.
