Translation Notes

In the official lyrics, all the instances of “Aa-ah” are written out in different lengths, with/without ellipsis, etc, and alternating between kanji, katakana, and hiragana.

The “ねえ” (translated as “hey”) repeated at the beginning of a few lines could also be read/heard as the last word of the preceding line. In that case, as a sentence ending particle, it has a meaning along the lines of “isn’t that right?” or “[…], ok?”

This one was a bit hard for me because of how informal it is, and didn't come out vaguely singable like my usual work. But I persevered because I really like this song. I’d greatly appreciate any mistakes I may have made being pointed out.

1 Usually refers to dishes of insects/animals/body parts found strange and repulsive by the speaker. You can do an image search for this if you want…

2 I briefly considered translating this as “TikTok dancing,” but I decided to go literal.

3 The phrase “himei wo ageru” generally means “to let out a scream,” but it can also be used to mean someone is shrieking a complaint. I purposely made this line ambiguous as to whether the plated subject is screaming about being placed on the table, or someone else is screaming for whatever reason about what is being served.

4 “Shinjou” means “thoughts, emotions, and feelings one holds deeply in their heart.” I went back and forth between the words convictions, sentiments, feelings, and emotions. Sentiments is probably a more perfect translation, but I hear it and think of the more flowery romantic definition before the “strongly held feeling” definition.

      Translation Notes

Astral Travel was posted on 3/20/22, which is the vernal equinox and right in the middle of Higan. During this week, the gate to the other world/afterlife is said to be open. 

¹Lanterns are often used as guiding lights for spirits temporarily visiting the world of the living. (ex: during obon)

²“Kottsun” is sfx for the lil forehead bonk like this.

³“Korori” as an adverb means to effortlessly, suddenly, or completely change in some way, usually by falling down. “Korori” as onomatopoeia is the sound of something small and light falling and rolling… like an egg being laid. So that’s my attempt to translate the image I think Kikuo was going for.

⁴“Koukou” is an adverb used to mean something is “brilliantly” glowing/shining etc. It also sounds like chicken clucking. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out an English word with that meaning that sounds like cluck/bawk, but I couldn’t. So I went with “glow” sounding like “ko” because “spark-a-glitter doo” sounds ridiculous.
