Postcards from El Paso: 1.) One of the coolest, most thoughtful gifts I have received was a stack of postcards from @teddyt, his bestie #EsmeBarrera & their friends from back home. "I got random El Pasoans & artists to write you notes on these postcards. Members of Sparta [also At The Drive In*], Modest Mouse, The Vue & other visitors wrote some too. Pretty Girls Make Graves & Mahjongg forgot to give me back their notes to you. ☹" 2.) Postcard from Teddy 3. & 4.) Postcards from Esme, one of the coolest ladies I've ever met. I was reminded of her today when I saw a @nobummersummer post. Ted said I reminded him of her, which is the highest compliment. 5.) A postcard from Sparta/At The Drive In lolllllll. 6-10.) A picture of a picture that's 14-year-old me (hahaha!!!) + one of my fave #StanLee quotes. While I wasn't an avid comic book reader, I enjoyed collecting comic cards & watching the cartoons w/ my brothers as a kid. As an awkward pre-teen & young POC, I found the #Xmen storylines to be very relatable in time when I couldn't relate to many around me. Being a first gen. Asian American w/ a different last name sometimes gets you mocked, & you come home to a different set of rules, & sometimes, those rules also get you made fun of by other kids. It's not about the kids being mean but acknowledging those feelings of isolation & being different. I immediately noticed POCs like Storm, Jubilee & other female characters & noticed inclusivity in the #MarvelUniverse. A collection of my favorite #AnthonyBourdain quotes & images from a fellow water sign, who'd probably say astrology is BS. It's been touching reading everyone's tributes from around the world for a man who was so beloved. After my father (Orly) passed in 2015 and the (turbulent) current state of affairs, Tony's words & adventures helped me survive. One of my fave memories was spending a weekend in Vegas & binge watching his show w/ my mom and brother Mark. Chris & I were trying to finish Parts Unknown before it leaves Netflix this month, but I dreaded it. I want to keep it as something to look forward to. Thankfully, we can still stream it somewhere else. The episode where Tony visited Manila touched my heart as he shared the plight of the overseas Filipino worker. When I'm in a slump, each episode starts to give me the urge to start writing again. Maybe I will soon. Big thx to a man who stood up for marginalized women & communities, & he didn't make it all about himself. I will miss his resistance & desire to learn more beyond the surface level. Happy #RecordStoreDay! I acquired a stack of Beatles & Herman's Hermits records from the 50 cent bin. They were previously owned by Sandie B, born in 1941, that had "Sandie & Lee" & "cute" scribbled across the dreamy 60s albums. Well after some searches, it turns out young love didn't last... Sandie ended up w/ Gene. I hope it was a good life. She passed away earlier this year. Her records will be loved for another lifetime. 😢😊 (at Georgetown Records)
