Drew Out The Man
As Adam and Eve partook of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, they were then to depart from the Garden of Eden. They left their Edenic state and had to learn to live in the lone and dreary wilderness. This was the consequence of their transgression. The majority of the Judeo Christian world perceives this act as the great sin that punished all of mankind and we are forever…

Our 50ᵗʰ State – The Last Frontier, Alaska when we set out to accomplish this goal back in 2013 we never dreamed of the experiences that we would have. The adventures since then have shaped who we are as a family and how our children see the world. If you followed along in any way then you got to be a witness to the adventure and the effort that went into the first 49 states. Our original plan…

We Are What We Strive to Be
When I would attend race expos all across the country I would chat with a lot of runners. The question would often arise as to whether one was a runner or not. This was a common concept for sure. There was always someone that was there because they were signed up for the race but was adamant that they were not a runner. They were running just the half marathon and thus they could not possibly be…

Dealing with Changes in Life, The Parable of the Robin’s Nest
In my life right now, there are a lot of things that are changing and evolving. This change has caused me to think more about how a change in our lives is one true constant. I am grateful for God’s many lessons that have prepared us for significant life changes. Every season gives way to change; Autumn brings colorful leaves, Winter brings pure white landscapes, Spring brings a new rebirth of…

A Year of Book of Mormon Study
As we dive back into the Book of Mormon this year let us take a look at what I would consider Nephi’s thesis statement of the Book of Mormon. *But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.* (1 Nephi 1:20) Nephi is then going to show us within the…

Failing Connections
Over the weekend, I attended a cousin’s funeral. My family on my mother’s side is extensive. My mother is the youngest of seven children. When my Grandmother passed away nearly a decade ago, she left a legacy of love behind but also a family that consisted of these seven children, 35 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. This is the large family that I grew up…

Is Being a Disciple of Jesus Hard?
Is Being a Disciple of Jesus Hard? It is but it is also easy as we are yoked with Jesus Christ and learn to leverage His enabling power.
“I grieve for those who leave the Church because they feel membership requires too much of them. They have not yet discovered that making and keeping covenants actually makes life easier! Each person who makes covenants…and keeps them—has increased access to the power of Jesus Christ.” Living in accordance with the commandments of God can seem like something that is hard to do on a regular basis.…

Refined by Affliction
Refined by Affliction -> Life is challenging but it is meant to be that way. By working through the trials we learn to grow into better individuals. We are more able to live the life that God has intended for us.
Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. Living the Gospel of Jesus Christ is Hard Living the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not easy. There are many promises that we will be blessed if we keep the commandments. We learn that the Lord will reward those who hearken to His voice and have faith in Him. However, in mortality, it seems that the…

A Covenant of Peace
A Covenant of Peace - Are we living up to the covenants that we have made?
”and after they had entered into a covenant with him of peace they were suffered to depart into the wilderness.” Alma 44:20 It always amazes me as I read through the Book of Mormon to see how stout the people were with their covenants between each other. When a covenant was made, there was no desire to break it. I think of the bonds and agreements we make today; in religion, business, and…

The Grace of Christ Works In The Darkest Places
The Grace of Christ Works In The Darkest Places
I will open rivers in high places and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. – Isaiah 41:18 The Prophet Isaiah often gives us these beautiful images as he strives to portray prophetic proclamations of future events. We could cite several verses of him using examples that the Jews would understand to show something of…

Redefine Winning
The other day, I happened upon a comment on LinkedIn that caused me to really think. The post was about a small local dessert shop that had a line out the door and was therefore winning. The comment contended that they could not be winning because they had a competitor that had over 60 locations across many states. I have to disagree with this comment. In today’s marketplace, I think we have…

Facing Our Trials
Sometimes it is hard for me to talk about trials for a few reasons. My trials are never as hard as someone elses, I am very blessed, and I am somehow fearful that if I talk about trials then the Lord will see fit that it is time to face some. This is not to say that I am without my own trials but they seem insignificant in comparison to what others have dealt wit.h However, we all have trials…

A Prince of Peace
A Prince of Peace
When we celebrate the Christmas season we tend to recite various names of our Savior. As Handel made the words of Isaiah famous, the term Prince of Peace has, justifiably, become synonomous with Jesus Christ. However, he is not the only Prince of Peace that we learn about throughout the whole of scripture. Even as Jesus commonly commanded us to exemplifly Him in various similitudes, we are also…

A Return to Forest Bathing
A Return to Forest Bathing
“Wilderness is not a luxury but necessity of the human spirit.” –Edward Abbey Two of the past three days have been significant strides for me; I have been outside on thirty-minute walks. A few months ago, we moved to a new home that is a stone’s throw from the lake and a few ponds. The problem is is that I have not been able to enjoy it. Over the summer and fall, my back had been causing me…
